PRELUDE CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. C: Amen. P: Trusting God s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. P: Eternal God our creator, C: in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. P: Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God forgives you all your sins. C: Amen. ENTRANCE HYMN Eternal Father, Strong to Save ELW Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm has bound the restless wave, who bade the mighty ocean deep its own appointed limits keep: oh, hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea. 2 O Savior, whose almighty word the winds and waves submissive heard, who walked upon the foaming deep, and calm amid the storm didst sleep: oh, hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea. 3 O Holy Spirit, who didst brood upon the chaos dark and rude, and bid its angry tumult cease, and give, for wild confusion, peace: oh, hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea. 4 O Trinity of love and pow'r, all trav'lers guard in danger's hour from rock and tempest, fire and foe, protect them wheresoe'er they go; thus evermore shall rise to thee glad hymns and praise from land and sea. APOSTOLIC GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.
HYMN OF PRAISE Blessing and Honor ELW 854 vs. 1,4 1 Blessing and honor and glory and pow'r, wisdom and riches and strength evermore, be to the Lamb who our battle has won, whose are the kingdom, the crown, and the throne; whose are the kingdom, the crown, and the throne! 4 Give we the glory and praise to the Lamb! Take we the robe and the harp and the palm; sing we the song of the Lamb who was slain, dying in weakness and rising to reign; dying in weakness and rising to reign! PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray O God of creation, eternal majesty, C: you preside over land and sea, sunshine and storm. By your strength pilot us, by your power preserve us, by your wisdom instruct us, and by your hand protect us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. CHILDREN S MESSAGE and WORD TIME FIRST READING Job 38: The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: 2 Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. 4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? 8 Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb? 9 when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10 and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, 11 and said, Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped? L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
SECOND READING Psalm 107:1-3, Please read responsively. 1 Give thanks to the LORD, for the LORD is good, for God s mercy endures forever. 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that God redeemed them from the hand of the foe, 3 gathering them in from the lands; from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. 23 Some went down to the sea in ships, plying their trade in deep waters. 24 They beheld the works of the LORD, God s wonderful works in the deep. 25 Then God spoke, and a stormy wind arose, which tossed high the waves of the sea. 26 They mounted up to the heavens and descended to the depths; their souls melted away in their peril. 27 They staggered and reeled like drunkards, and all their skill was of no avail. 28 Then in their trouble they cried to the LORD, and you delivered them from their distress. 29 You stilled the storm to a whisper and silenced the waves of the sea. 30 Then were they glad when it grew calm, when you guided them to the harbor they desired. 31 Let them give thanks to you, LORD, for your steadfast love and your wonderful works for all people. 32 Let them exalt you in the assembly of the people; in the council of the elders, let them sing hallelujah! L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Halle, Halle, Hallelujah ELW 172 Halle, halle, hallelujah. Halle, halle, hallelujah. Halle, halle, hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. P: The Holy Gospel according Mark, the 4th Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord.
GOSPEL Mark 4: When evening had come, [Jesus said to the disciples,] Let us go across to the other side. 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith? 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON The Rev. Gregg Hoffman HYMN OF THE DAY How Firm a Foundation ELW How firm a foundation, O saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in Christ Jesus, the Word! What more can he say than to you he has said who unto the Savior for refuge have fled? 2 "Fear not, I am with you, oh, be not dismayed, for I am your God and will still give you aid; I'll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand." 3 "When through fiery trials your pathway shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be your supply. The flames shall not hurt you; I only design your dross to consume and your gold to refine." 4 "Throughout all their lifetime my people shall prove my sov'reign, eternal, unchangeable love; and then, when gray hairs shall their temples adorn, like lambs they shall still in my bosom be borne."
APOSTLES CREED A: Together with sisters and brothers across the world, we profess the faith we share: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. LITANY OF SENDING FOR THE GATHERING PRAYERS A: Filled with the Holy Spirit, we join with the church in every place, praying for the world that God so loves. Each petition concludes with: A: Hear us, O God, C: your mercy is great. The prayers conclude: P: By the sure guidance of your Holy Spirit, O God, we lift up our prayers in trust and thanksgiving; through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. PEACE P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you.
OFFERING MUSIC OFFERTORY Take My Life, That I May Be ELW 583 Refrain Take my life, that I may be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise. 1 Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of thy love; take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for thee. Refrain 2 Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold; take my intellect and use ev'ry pow'r as thou shalt choose. Refrain OFFERTORY PRAYER A: Merciful God, C: you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
SANCTUS You Are Holy ELW 525 All sing A, All sing B, All sing either A or B A) You are holy, you are whole. You are always ever more than we ever understand. You are always at hand. Blessed are you coming near. Blessed are you coming here to your church in wine and bread, raised from soil, raised from dead. B) You are holy, you are wholeness, you are present. Let the cosmos praise you, Lord! Sing hosanna in the highest! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna to our God! EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. [The Words of Institution are spoken here] P: Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. C: Amen. LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray. C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO THE TABLE P: Come, let us eat, for now the feast is spread, and all are welcome!
HOLY COMMUNION All are welcome to receive Communion. Those unable to partake of wine or wheaten bread are assured that the Church affirms our Lord s full presence in, with, and under each element alone. To receive the bread and the wine, simply hold out your hands. If you prefer gluten-free wafer or grape juice, please hold out one finger to indicate your preference to the minister, then hold out your hand to receive. If you choose not to commune, but desire to receive a spoken blessing instead, cross your arms over your chest. LAMB OF GOD ELW 195 COMMUNION HYMNS My Faith Looks up to Thee ELW 759 Precious Lord, Take My Hand ELW 773 POST-COMMUNION BLESSING P: May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the gifts of his body and blood strengthen, keep and unite us, now and forever. C: Amen.
POST-COMMUNION CANTICLE The Lord Now Sends Us Forth ELW 538 The Lord now sends us forth with hands to serve and give, to make of all the earth a better place to live. Repeat The angels are not sent into our world of pain to do what we were meant to do in Jesus' name; that falls to you and me and all who are made free. Help us, O Lord, we pray, to do your will today. Repeat POST-COMMUNION PRAYER A: Lord Jesus Christ, host of this heavenly meal, C: you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you are Lord forevermore. Amen. BLESSING P: May God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, grant you the gifts of faith and hope. Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. C: Amen. DISMISSAL A: Go in peace. The Spirit sends us forth to serve! C: Thanks be to God!
