PRELUDE Trumpet Tune on Aurelia - arr. Raabe CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. C: Amen. P: Trusting God s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. P: Eternal God our creator, C: in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. P: Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God forgives you all your sins. C: Amen. ENTRANCE HYMN O Master, Let Me Walk With You ELW O Master, let me walk with you in lowly paths of service true; tell me your secret; help me bear the strain of toil, the fret of care. 2 Help me the slow of heart to move by some clear, winning word of love; teach me the wayward feet to stay, and guide them in the homeward way. 3 Teach me your patience; share with me a closer, dearer company, in work that keeps faith sweet and strong, in trust that triumphs over wrong, 4 In hope that sends a shining ray far down the future's broad'ning way, in peace that only you can give; with you, O Master, let me live. APOSTOLIC GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.
HYMN OF PRAISE Blessing and Honor ELW Blessing and honor and glory and pow'r, wisdom and riches and strength evermore, be to the Lamb who our battle has won, whose are the kingdom, the crown, and the throne; whose are the kingdom, the crown, and the throne! 4 Give we the glory and praise to the Lamb! Take we the robe and the harp and the palm; sing we the song of the Lamb who was slain, dying in weakness and rising to reign; dying in weakness and rising to reign! PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray Ever-loving God, C: your Son gives himself as living bread for the life of the world. Fill us with such a knowledge of his presence that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life to serve you continually, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. CHILDREN S MESSAGE, WORD TIME AND NOISY OFFERING FIRST READING 1 Kings 2:10-12; 3: David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David. 11 The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. 12 So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established. 3 Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David; only, he sacrificed and offered incense at the high places. 4 The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, Ask what I should give you. 6 And Solomon said, You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. 7 And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. 9 Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people? 10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. 11 God said to him, Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, 12 I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. 13 I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor all your life; no other king shall compare with you. 14 If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
SECOND READING Ephesians 5: Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17 So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, 20 giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Halle, Halle, Hallelujah ELW 172 Halle, halle, hallelujah. Halle, halle, hallelujah. Halle, halle, hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. P: The Holy Gospel according John, the 6 th Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL John 6:51-58 [Jesus said,] 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53 So Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON The Rev. Gregg Hoffman
HYMN OF THE DAY I Love to Tell the Story ELW I love to tell the story of unseen things above, of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love. I love to tell the story, because I know it's true; it satisfies my longings as nothing else would do. Refrain I love to tell the story; 'twill be my theme in glory to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. 2 I love to tell the story: how pleasant to repeat what seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet! I love to tell the story, for some have never heard the message of salvation from God's own holy word. Refrain 3 I love to tell the story, for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest. And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song, I'll sing the old, old story that I have loved so long. Refrain APOSTLES CREED A: Together with sisters and brothers across the world, we profess the faith we share: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
PRAYERS A: Trusting in our loving and almighty God who abundantly provides the bread of life to all who hunger, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. Each petition concludes with: A: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. The prayers conclude: P: Almighty and loving God, we look to you in hope and trust, knowing that you will do far more than we can ask or imagine, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. PEACE P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. OFFERING MUSIC Let Us Break Bread Together - arr. Hogan Lisa Hamilton, soprano OFFERTORY Take My Life, That I May Be ELW 583 Refrain Take my life, that I may be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise. 1 Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of thy love; take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for thee. Refrain 2 Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold; take my intellect and use ev'ry pow'r as thou shalt choose. Refrain OFFERTORY PRAYER A: Merciful God, C: you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: SANCTUS You Are Holy ELW 525 All sing A, All sing B, All sing either A or B A) You are holy, you are whole. You are always ever more than we ever understand. You are always at hand. Blessed are you coming near. Blessed are you coming here to your church in wine and bread, raised from soil, raised from dead. B) You are holy, you are wholeness, you are present. Let the cosmos praise you, Lord! Sing hosanna in the highest! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna to our God! EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. [The Words of Institution are spoken here] P: Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. C: Amen.
LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray. C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO THE TABLE P: Come, let us eat, for now the feast is spread, and all are welcome! HOLY COMMUNION All are welcome to receive Communion. Those unable to partake of wine or wheaten bread are assured that the Church affirms our Lord s full presence in, with, and under each element alone. To receive the bread and the wine, simply hold out your hands. If you prefer gluten-free wafer or grape juice, please hold out one finger to indicate your preference to the minister, then hold out your hand to receive. If you choose not to commune, but desire to receive a spoken blessing instead, cross your arms over your chest. LAMB OF GOD ELW 195 COMMUNION HYMNS Eat This Bread ELW 472 Refrain Bind Us Together Bind us together, Lord, bind us together With cords that cannot be broken. Bind us together, Lord, bind us together, Lord; Bind us together in love. 1 There is only one God. There is only one King. There is only one Body; That is why we can sing: Refrain 2 You are the family of God. You are the promise divine. You are God s chosen desire. You are the glorious new wine. Refrain POST-COMMUNION BLESSING P: May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the gifts of his body and blood strengthen, keep and unite us, now and forever. C: Amen.
POST-COMMUNION CANTICLE The Lord Now Sends Us Forth ELW 538 The Lord now sends us forth with hands to serve and give, to make of all the earth a better place to live. Repeat The angels are not sent into our world of pain to do what we were meant to do in Jesus' name; that falls to you and me and all who are made free. Help us, O Lord, we pray, to do your will today. Repeat POST-COMMUNION PRAYER A: Lord Jesus Christ, host of this heavenly meal, C: you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you are Lord forevermore. Amen. FAREWELL AND GODSPEED TO GARY MITCHELL BLESSING P: May God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, grant you the gifts of faith and hope. Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. C: Amen. DISMISSAL A: Go in peace. The Spirit sends us forth to serve! C: Thanks be to God! The Veterans' Restoration Quarters is a residential ABCCM program that "addresses every area of restoration in the life of a homeless veteran." On the last Sunday of every month, our Nativity team prepares a dinner of taco salads and ice cream sundaes for the residents in the program. It costs about $350 a month to provide this meal. The cost of this ministry was once covered by Thrivent donations, but those donations have dwindled over the years - however, the need for this ministry has not! We are committed to supporting these veterans in their journey to restoration, and we know the great value of this important ministry. Thank you for your support! "FEED MY SHEEP" Calvary Food Pantry welcomes you to participate in the mission to feed our neighbors with dignity and compassion. CFP is open every Saturday, 8:30AM -11:00AM, providing frozen meat, milk, eggs, canned goods, personal care items, and pet food. CFP strives to provide 1/2 of the weekly grocery needs for each family. On a typical Saturday, families representing 350+ individuals come to receive food.
