At the conclusion of the Gospel: Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.. MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION HOMILY PROFESSION OF FAITH Please Stand I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, All bow while saying: and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. In the study of history, we must all be cautioned against presuming that simply because something was done this way centuries ago, therefore it is automatically better. To fall into this antiquarianism is just as bad an idea as it is to ignore history. Most Catholics are vaguely aware that there are several Eucharistic Prayers from which to choose at Sunday Mass, but far fewer know much about the origin of these prayers. It is a classic case of something old, something new, and I hope that you find it helpful to your own understanding of the Mass to learn about the history and rich tradition found in the key prayers used to consecrate the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. Eucharistic Prayers are sometimes referred to by the words Canon of the Mass, or in the Eastern Rites, as the anaphora. Contrary to popular belief, nowhere at Vatican II did the Council Fathers mandate that new Eucharistic prayers be added. Only one of the Council Fathers, Bishop Wilhelm Duschak, S.V.D. (serving as a missionary bishop in the Philippines), even suggested that new prayers be added. In 1964, Pope Paul VI appointed a committee to carry out the Council s directives by means of concrete legislation and the revision of the chief Roman liturgical books:, Breviary, etc. This committee was called the Consilium for the Implementation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy; it included members (about 50 cardinals, bishops, and abbots) and consultors (liturgical scholars) from all parts of the world. While this was an approved group, it is increasingly clear that some of their recommendations went beyond what the Council Fathers ordered or even envisioned. Shortly after the Council the topic of Eucharistic Prayers surfaced again, and an appeal was made to Pope Paul VI in He responded that the present Roman Canon (today s Eucharistic Prayer I) was to be left unchanged; two or three anaphoras for use at particular specified times are to be composed or looked for. His response would seem to indicate a certain subsidiarity for any new prayers, yet that is not in fact what happened. The new prayers were used interchangeably, almost from the beginning, and not just in specified times. The first prayers to be added are what today we call Eucharistic Prayers II, III and IV, which were promulgated by the Sacred Congregation for Rites in May of For centuries, the Roman Canon was the only one used at Mass in the Latin Rite. In the first four centuries, a variety of Eucharistic Prayers were employed, but as the liturgy became more universally codified, they faded. Much of the work on these new prayers was forged when an Italian liturgical scholar from Rome poured over ancient text in the Benedictine Monastery of Mont-César in Belgium during the summer of His work complete, the research was first presented to the Consilium and eventually to the Synod of Bishops. In 1967, the Synod bishops were queried: Should three other Eucharistic Prayers, in addition to the Roman Canon, be introduced into the Latin liturgy? Of the 183 in attendance, 22 said No, while 33 voted Yes, with qualifications. The qualifications included among others, always giving pride of place to the Roman Canon, and that the new prayers should be guided by very precise norms. Agitation for creating new alternatives to the Roman Canon (Prayer I) was intensifying especially in Holland, and new prayers were published by Dutch and Flemish bishops and used without authorization from Rome. Some serious scholars

5 have argued that such experimentation only hastened the introduction of new prayers, even as curial officials and the Pope himself were hesitant. Nevertheless, the three new Eucharistic Prayers were promulgated by a decree of the Congregation of Rites on May 23, 1968, which also determined that the prayers could be used beginning August 15, A few points merit noting in the promulgation decree, even if they are too often ignored. Eucharistic Prayer I is particularly suited to feasts of the apostles and saints mentioned in this Prayer; also to Sundays, unless pastoral reasons call for a different Eucharistic Prayer. Because of its distinctive features, Eucharistic Prayer II is better suited to weekdays or to special occasions. Eucharistic Prayer III is to have precedence on Sundays and holydays, and Eucharistic Prayer IV is particularly suited to a congregation of people with a more developed knowledge of Scripture. This prayer comes with its own fixed Preface, (the prayer said right before we sing the Holy, Holy, Holy), and I ll admit that I rarely use it. The new Eucharistic Prayers were added in part because of the move to add some variety to the Canon, especially considering that the Canon was now to be recited aloud, and not silently. The Eucharist Prayer demands that all listen to it with reverence and in silence. (Vatican II, SC # 78) I offer special thanks to Bernadette Dutke and other tour guides for their assistance with a very special tour for the American Council of the Blind, holding their national convention in Minneapolis. I was stationed in the sacristy and was so moved to present items for the tourists to touch, including Archbishop Ireland s crozier and Archbishop Dowling s chalice. It was an honor to be part and speaks to our mission to truly be a welcoming presence to all. Go west (middle-aged) man. I took a driving tour with a priest classmate to Swift County, MN (.S. 12) to see, among other sights, two Emmanuel Masqueray designed churches on the prairie one in Murdock, the other in Benson, the county seat. They were built as part of his campaign to settle (mostly) Irish immigrants along the new train routes, located today within the New lm Diocese. While enjoying lunch outdoors on a beautiful day, he remarked We haven t seen a single train just then we heard the roar of a massive three-engine BNSF lumbering through town. The recent death of holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel at 87 leaves a gaping hole. While doing the proverbial backpack through Europe thing in 1984, our group discussed whether we even wanted to go to see Auschwitz. After all, we were on vacation. Thankfully we did, knowing that we cannot be shielded forever from the reality of evil in the world. A horrible visit, and yet transformative. A group of ducks caused a three-car crash on I-694. It reminds me of my mid 1990 s visit to Canada s Northwest Territories, assisting during Holy Week. While driving on an endless dirt road with the nun assigned to Fort Resolution, I swerved to avoid a Ptarmagin, a beautiful white bird, narrowly avoiding the ditch. I apologized for losing control of the car and queried, Sister, what do you do when they just dart out like that? Calmly and softly, without missing a beat, she replied, We usually just run them over. Lesson learned! What s in a name? Paulopolitana et Minneapolitana. Fifty years ago Monday (11 July 1966), Pope Paul VI ordered those two words to be added, making us the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. In deference and obedience to the Pope, I offer no further comment. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. bel, Rector CATHEDRAL CALENDAR Sunday, July 10 11:15 a.m. Rosary for Life - Cana Chapel 6:00 p.m. Rosary for Life - Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Monday, July 11 Tuesday, July 12 Wednesday, July 13 6:30 p.m. Theology on Tap - O Gara s on Snelling Thursday, July 14 Friday, July 15 3:00 p.m. Divine Mercy Chaplet - Cana Chapel Saturday, July 16 - Missionary Appeal Weekend No Special Events Sunday, July 17 - Missionary Appeal Weekend Coffee and Donut Sunday Coffee and Donuts after the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. Masses 9:00 a.m. Calix Society Breakfast Meeting - Assembly Room 11:00 a.m. Lending Library - Hayden Hall 11:15 a.m. Rosary for Life - Cana Chapel 6:00 p.m. Rosary for Life - Chapel of the Blessed Virgin SMMER REMINDER OR SNDAY BEST Page 5 Although this grand cathedral would be a bit more grand with air-conditioning for these hot summer days, remember that modesty and dignity in apparel benefits our common worship of God. We want to avoid a casual attitude at Sunday Mass out of respect for the great gifts we receive here. Those engaged in our ministries are called to set an example for the entire congregation. Sunday best doesn t have to mean uncomfortable, but it should indicate how important this encounter with our Eucharistic Lord is to us. As we don t wear dressy clothes, to the beach, so we should avoid wearing beach clothing to Sunday Mass. Everything has its proper time and place.

MISSIONARY APPEAL WEEKEND, JLY Since its official recognition by the Church in 1836, the Society of Mary (Marist Fathers and Brothers) has committed itself to the missions in the southwestern Pacific. Since that time, the Marists have expanded into areas in Africa, Asia and South America. Today there are nearly 230 priests and brothers working in bush stations, teaching in schools and seminaries, ministering in training institutions, providing direct service to the poor, oppressed and marginalized, and contributing to the development of people for a better society and a strong local Church. Contributions to the Marists will help them in their mission of witness to the Gospel, service to the needy and helping the local Church to build a strong base for its promising future. Thank you for whatever you can do to help them in their lifelong commitment and work.

7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES... before Father Galtier III ne loi, une foi, un roi one law, one faith, one king. French and French Canadian explorers, traders, and adventurers pursued the motto, convinced that French culture, a superior civilization, would promote the true religion and their political goals. The priests who accompanied them dedicated themselves to spreading one faith, evangelizing natives and ministering to white settlers. They accepted their mission and the bleak future it offered: hard work... a lonely death, an unknown grave. The Jesuits who arrived in the Huron Valley in 1632 shared these sentiments. Their work among the Hurons was verified by the faith and virtue of the natives, among them Kateri Tekakwitha, Lily of the Mohawks. But later they would win the crown of martyrdom among the Iroquois in upstate New York. In Minnesota, explorers and traders Joliet, du L hut, de la Salle, and le Sueur--opened the land to one law and one king in the 1680s. It was the missionaries, among them Father Jacques Marquette and Father Louis Hennepin, who brought one faith to the upper Mississippi valley. In 1683 Father Hennepin recalled a moment in his travels, Continuing to ascend this river... the navigation is interrupted by a cataract which I called the Falls of St. Anthony of Padua, in gratitude for the favors done me by the Almighty God. He and the missionaries who followed him worked among the Dakotas and the Sioux. Father Augustin Ravoux, drawn to America by his zeal to work among Native Americans, mastered the Dakota language to serve the natives; he wrote and published prayer books and religious tracts in the Dakota language for their instruction. In 1862, the Dakota/Sioux prising drew him to Mankato where he ministered to Sioux prisoners waiting execution. He spent days with the condemned--listening, comforting, instructing. On December 22, he accompanied them to the scaffold. In later years, he would remember those terrible days as a ratification of the original fervor that had brought him across the sea from France twenty years before. Excerpts from Pilgrims to the Northland, by Marvin O Connell. Note: The feast of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is celebrated on July 14. She is among the saints imaged in the south rose window. Eight Jesuits, the North American Martyrs, worked among the Mohawk and Iroquois and are imaged in the north window. ACSP. Note: She Catches the Sun. Saint Kateri s image shines in the south rose window. Designed by Connick, the medallions in the window honor eight saints who served the Church and the faithful in north, central and South America. Saint Kateri stands as a model of the clean of heart. Lilies bedeck the medallions of this Mohawk virgin and martyr who devoted her life to prayer, penance, and the care of the sick. You can purchase a sun catcher of Saint Kateri or any of the other Saints--at the information desk in the Cathedral. All proceeds from the purchase of sun catchers contribute to the restoration of the rose windows. BAPTISM RITES We welcome those who have been newly baptized.
