2 TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The Messenger THE LOBBSTER TALE February is going to be an interesting month with a variety of events packed into its 28 days. Some of these events include Boy Scout Sunday on February 4, a celebration of the Blue Water District (which will soon be history) on the afternoon of February 11, the first Sunday in Lent on February 18, and of course, the celebration of Valentine s Day on February 14. Valentine s Day also happens to be Ash Wednesday. This will cause a struggle for those who always give up chocolate for Lent! I imagine that some couples will celebrate a day early in order to get around that conundrum. It seems rather appropriate to have a secular holiday about love that has been created by, or at least maintained by, this country s florists, candy makers and greeting card companies fall on a day when Christians begin to seriously reflect upon just how much God loves us! We share cards, candy, balloons and flowers on February 14 as a way of expressing our love with special people. Jesus expressed His love to all of humanity by giving His life on a cross so that we might be forgiven and experience new life through Him! During February of 2018, let us celebrate love between friends, spouses and significant others. Let us also celebrate the love of God expressed to us through the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ! 3 Jesus is our Guiding Light Egg Hunt Generational Ministries will be hosting Jesus is our Guiding Light flashlight egg hunt, but not the usual egg hunt. It will be combined with a potluck dinner and program at the church. All are welcome, singles, families, seniors, new members, and youth, on Saturday, March 17 at 5:30 p.m. We will connect modern day flashlight egg hunt with the true meaning of Easter and the Christian message based on John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. A sign-up sheet is in the Lobby and the last day to sign-up is March 4 th. Even though the weather has not been cooperating lately our programs for the new year are in full swing. Sunday School is still every Sunday from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m., with youth group following from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. The Wednesday after school program starts back up on the 17th of January and runs from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m., with dinner served at 6:00 p.m. and Bible study for kid's through 12th grade immediately follows dinner, with that program ending at 7:30 p.m. Watch for news about Camp Sunday and the Noisy Offering, which will be happening in the next few weeks. It is never to early to start saving our change. Debbie Muldoon, Christian Ed Director NEW JUNIOR HIGH CLASS Beginning Sunday, February 18 through Easter, April 1, we will be busy BUILDING EASTER with Legos. We will begin with green Legos for the garden and learn about prayer. Black Legos for strength to do the right thing even when it's hard. Red Legos for why Jesus had to die and white Legos so we can accept Him as our savior to spend forever in heaven with Him. Memory verse---but God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 Inclement Weather Cancellation Policy The church office will be closed and all other activities and meetings canceled (EXCEPT Food for Families) whenever the Lapeer Community Schools are closed for any type of inclement weather. (temperature, snow and/or ice). The youth are plowing through 2018! The Senior High students are returning today, Sunday, January 28 from a fun God-growing weekend at SpringHill Camp. We will be back at 4:30 p.m. and plan to have a reception for the youth. The thought is to have members of the church here for conversation with the returning youth for about 30 minutes about the retreat. I believe it will help the youth process the experience and grow stronger in their faith by immediately sharing their personal experience with others. Also, I think it will help to create relationships within the church body that might otherwise go un-nurtured. Hope to see many of you there. The Junior High youth will be going on their retreat to SpringHill February 9-11, so we will be doing it again on that Sunday as well. Thanks for your support, Creg June

4 UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Trinity United Methodist women will meet on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the North Parlor. Plan to join us for this afternoon meeting. May 19, 2018 a Saturday rummage sale is being planned to be held in the Fellowship Hall and parking lot spots will be available for crafters to rent-outside of course! Early registration for a parking lot space can be made for $15 before April 19th or $20 after that date. Contact Gloria Haynes or Diane Ritter Debi Lobb will be in charge of the indoor rummage sale. Watch for more details in the next few weeks! The Blue Water District Annual Spiritual Growth Retreat will be held at Lion's Bear Lake Camp, north of Lapeer on March This is a special treat of Christian renewal and is open to all women of Trinity. More information will be forthcoming but the speaker for the retreat is Rev. Faith Fowler from Cass Community. Eager to GET BACK IN THE GROOVE after a few days off, our Trinity men are looking forward to our first dinner gathering of 2018 at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, February 5 th at Leo s Restaurant. ALL MEN of the church and their male guests, are encouraged to join in for a great night of fine food, fellowship and some business, consisting of disbursing funds to some of our MISSION PROJECTS, and making some advance programming plans for Please NOTE this on your forward planning agenda, and ADD YOUR INPUT for our sensational year of 2018!! Sign-up sheet will be on the Welcome Table in the lobby. Chuck Bennett, President Housekeeping Note If you are going to leave oversized items on top of the mailboxes in the mail center, please leave a note as to who the items belong to and let them know the items are there for pick-up. There is a mail slot at the bottom far left of the mailboxes with post-it notes and pencils for this purpose. These items tend to pile up over time, causing the top of the mailboxes to look cluttered and unsightly. Our Trustees work so hard making sure the church building is safe and attractive for the members and to provide a positive first impression to our visitors--please do your part to eliminate the clutter on top of the mailboxes. If you have not yet received your donation statement for 2017, or have questions about the statement you received, please feel free to contact me. Also, just a reminder that pre-arranged electronic giving set up through your bank is a great way to make your weekly tithe without all the hassle of remembering your checks and envelopes. Most of the local banks offer this service feel free to contact me with questions. We start at 9:30 a.m. You can bring sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting or any other sewing projects or you can just stop in for fellowship. Craft projects can be brought but will have to be worked on in the adjacent room. We bring our own lunch if we are staying all day. LEISURETIMERS (Trinity s Retirees Group!) Wednesday, February 14 Come and enjoy the fun on Valentine s Day "White Elephant Brown Bag Potluck Bingo. Bring a dish to pass and at least two (2) bags for give away. We will eat at Noon. Meet in the Fellowship Hall. We must be out by 3:00 p.m. for "Kids Street. All retirees are welcome!!

5 February is National Heart Month and we encourage everyone to wear red on Sunday, February 4 th. In the U.S., heart and blood vessel disease are still the leading cause of death and disability. Two recent studies are worth noting. The first has shown that people who sit for long periods of time (over 2 hours), are at increased risk of cardiovascular events even if they exercised earlier in the day. Think about that. How many of us eat dinner, sit down to watch the news, then the game shows, then the sitcom/dramas it can turn into 3-4 hours easily. Simple solution: every 30 minutes get up during commercials and walk in place, stretch, bend, and move. The second study showed that people who stopped eating for 12 hours each day say from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. had better weight control and better overall health. The study looked at 12 hour fasts but I suspect even a 10 hour span would be beneficial. These are two simple goals we can all work toward for a heart healthier SHOW THE LOVE Jesus tells us in Luke 10:27 that we are to love our neighbor as yourself. In John 13:34-35 He says, A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. The Outreach Committee is seeking your help to act on this command. During the month of February, Show the Love by donating the following items to Trinity s Pantry Ministries. Last names starting with the letters: A-M donate can(s) of tuna fish, can(s) of green beans, and a box of cereal. N-Z donate tube(s) of toothpaste, male or female deodorant(s), and a toothbrush (adult and children s). By showing your support of these ministries we let those giving us grant funds know that we as a congregation are serious about helping those in need in our community. Thank you, Shirley Buckalew, Pantry Coordinator The Outreach Committee would like to thank the congregation for providing 52 kids from Lapeer with Christmas gifts and stockings. Several thank you notes from the families are posted on the Outreach bulletin board across from the Church Office. Wednesday, February 14, our Ash Wednesday Service will begin our Lenten season at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Our 5 week Lenten Services will begin on Thursday, February 22. The theme of this year s Lenten Service series will be "Open My Life, Lord." The worship services will begin at 7 p.m. and will take place in the sanctuary. The messages during the will be provided by the laity of Trinity and will include the following topics: Open my Eyes, Lord Open my Hands, Lord Open my Ears, Lord Open my Heart, Lord Open my Life, Lord The Lenten Service series will be followed by a special Maundy Thursday service scheduled for March 29. This service will also begin at 7pm and will be held in the church sanctuary. LENTEN POTLUCK DINNERS: Potluck dinners will be held at the Fellowship Hall on Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m., beginning on February 22 and ending on March 22. Come join us for some awesome food and fellowship. Lenten services will begin at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary. LENTEN PROGRAM FOR THE CHILDREN: Lenten program for children ages 4 year olds through 6th grade will begin on Thursday, February 22 through March 22. Room #105, 7-8 p.m. From Jesus' prayer in the garden to the empty tomb, with green, black, red, and white Legos and crafts, music and drama, we will learn about the Easter story. A ray of sunshine on a bleak winter day: Easter is only two months away! The Worship Committee will again be ordering live flowers to beautify our sanctuary on that Holy day. You may purchase a flower in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Beginning Sunday, February 18, there will be order blanks in your bulletin or at a table set up in the Lobby.
