2 page 2 The scholarship selection process for the 2018 Women s Guild & Knights of Columbus Annual Scholarship is complete! Every year, St. Mark s Women s Guild and Knights of Columbus join forces to give away 10 scholarships for vocational school, college, university, junior college or community college. The Women s Guild and Knights of Columbus are proud to announce the results. There were 21 applicants from nine schools in the St. Mark s area. Once again, there were more than 10 applicants who expect to graduate cum laude. Scholarship awards, however, are based on merit and service with an emphasis on church-related activities. This made the competition really close! To be eligible to apply for the $1,000 scholarship, applicants must: be a senior in high school senior, be registered at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church; plan to attend a certified college or vocational school in ; and be The Winged Lion April St. Mark s 2018 scholarship recipients announced By Deacon Steve Marques God created mankind in his image; in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. God blessed them and God said to them: Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Gn 1:27-28 Theology of the Body (ToB) first came about as a series of 129 talks given by Pope John Paul II when he began his pontificate in These Wednesday addresses were well researched, based on scripture, and founded upon the Pope s earlier writing, Love & Responsibility. When you think about the term Theology of the Body, it may conjure up a confusing mixture of the divine and the earthly, but that is okay because that is what Jesus did for us. Through the Incarnation, the Divine took on a human body; the Immortal involved in church-related activities at St. Mark s or other Catholic church. Evaluations were anonymous (except for interviews) and were conducted by 20 evaluators. All applicants were well qualified, and it was very difficult selecting only 10 recipients. The recipients for the five Women s Guild scholarships are: Mariel Garcia, Giana Gonzales, Cara Harlow, Joseph Martinez and Kayla Patton. The recipients for Knights of Columbus are: Daniel Gill, Lucas Holzmann, Zach Huggins, Sam Kamen and Madeline Madden. Part of the application process includes a written essay. We received some remarkable essays from the applicants, and, starting next month, we will be sharing some of the essays right here in the Winged Lion. We are sure you will be just as impressed as the scholarship committee is with the brilliance of our St. Mark s youth! Deacon Steve Marques serves on the Knights of Columbus scholarship committee. If you have a body, then Theology of the Body is for you became mortal; the Word became flesh. In this study of St. Pope John Paul II s teaching, you will be amazed as many familiar scripture verses and Bible stories are brought to life in new and exciting ways. An Introduction to the Theology of the Body: Discovering the Master Plan for Your Life, is an eight-part, four-hour study designed to give you a solid understanding of God s plan for humanity--a plan stamped right into our bodies. Most people have heard the whats of Catholic teaching, but very few have ever heard the whys. With profound insight, Christopher West demonstrates that the Church s teaching on sex and marriage makes sense, and, in fact, is the logic of Christianity because it corresponds perfectly with the deepest stirrings and Intro to ToB Course Topics What Does It Mean to be Human? 3 2018 The Winged Lion We are getting our A.C.T.S. together! By Goeff Boggess Here at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, we have a very large and active A.C.T.S. community. Have you heard of A.C.T.S.? A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Community, Theology and Service) spiritual retreats are offered through our parish and gives our retreatants the opportunity to review, renew and refresh their relationship with Jesus Christ. An A.C.T.S. retreat is an amazing weekend, and for many people, it is a lifechanging experience. During the weekend, there is prayer, singing and the kind of brotherly and sisterly fellowship that many desire. As a retreatant, you will get to know and spend time with your fellow parishioners, building a strong and lasting bond. You will also have time to reflect on your life priorities and pray for the people you love. If you are interested in joining us on an A.C.T.S. retreat or would like more information, contact Rita Cabello at (210) or rcabello@stmarkevangelist. com or Geoff Boggess at (210) or geoffboggess@gmail.com. We would love to see you on one of these upcoming retreats so that you, too, may experience this wonderful God-filled, loving weekend. To all A.C.T.S. brothers and sisters reading this article, we need your help. We are building a database of people interested in attending a retreat. As the retreat teams form, the list of interested people will be given to the leadership to contact and follow up. If you know of someone that has shown interest, please forward their contact information (name, and phone number) to Rita or Geoff, and we will make sure they are contacted. Geoff Boggess serves on the St. Mark s A.C.T.S. core team. The primary purpose of A.C.T.S. at St. Mark s is to strengthen our parish as a Eucharistic Catholic community through renewed participation in worship, fellowship and service. UPCOMING ST. Kevin Guerra page 3 K UDOS K ORNER This month s kudos goes to parishioner and Eagle Scout Kevin Guerra, 18, of Boy Scout Troop #360. This past February, Kevin, a senior at Johnson High School, completed his Eagle Scout service project, which was to construct back rests on the top level of all six bleachers at St. Mark s CYO sports fields. Kevin chose this project because he wanted to make the bleachers safer for parents and small children who use the seats regularly during the sports season. In order to fulfill his Eagle Scout service project requirement, Kevin had to plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious ins tu on, any school, or the community. We are very grateful to Kevin for choosing St. Mark s! The Eagle Scout service project gives the scouts the opportunity to learn and demonstrate leadership skills and fulfills the Scout oath to help others at all mes. The Eagle Scout service project also teaches important lessons in project management and taking responsibility for a significant accomplishment. Kudos to Kevin for contribu ng to the St. Mark s parish community and for making safety of the larger community a priority. Thank you, Kevin!!

4 page 4 I m so very happy to tell you how the St. Mark s Criminal Justice Ministry has grown and has helped so many people since we started the ministry six years ago. We have been blessed to have had 627 men participate in ACTS & Kolbe Prison Ministry retreats over the years since we started going to the Briscoe Unit in Dilley, TX. We currently have a faithful Catholic population in the prison of 1,500 men with about 250 who are in full communion with the Church. Many who have been through our retreats have been released or have been moved to other units. We ve had 73 men who have been fully been received into the church through Confirmation at the Briscoe Unit. This is so exciting when we think back about our first visit to the Briscoe Unit and had three Catholics come to our service. The Holy Spirit has been at work in our ministry--more than 140 men and women have volunteered to help with retreats, meals, Communion services, RCIA classes, monthly reunions and Bible study. I would like to recognize some special support that has come from our very own parish community. First, I d like to thank and recognize our pastor, Father Kevin, who has been supportive of our efforts since the very beginning. Of course, we cannot forget the work of Dot Hamlin, who also supports our ministry with prayer and assistance from the Pastoral Office. Paul Vance, who was the previous di- rector for St. Mark s adult faith formation department, has been a regular volunteer and has blessed us with many classes The Winged Lion April St. Mark s Criminal Justice Ministry celebrates its sixth year By Gerald Gaenslen Bishop Michael Boulette, Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio, blesses an offender with Holy Oils during his Confirmation into the Catholic Church at the Briscoe Unit. and lessons on our Catholic faith. We ve been blessed by Bill Schott, who has led the weekly RCIA classes, as well as those who instruct with him, including Anne and Jim Hayes, Joseph DeFalco and Deacon Bob Leibrecht. Leo Forget has been leading a weekly Bible study for more than a year, and his wife, Nancy, who is also a volunteer, has assisted him for several months. St. Mark s Knights of Columbus Coun- cil #7613 has been providing meals for the retreats for years along with the St. Mark s Women s Guild. We ve been blessed to have a few women go into the unit during our re- treats to serve the meals. The Women s Guild has also helped us by baking cookies--120 dozen chocolate chip cookies per retreat! Father Ruben Garcia, pastor of St. Criminal Justice Ministry volunteers Nancy Forget and Rosie Lindquist serve lunch to Briscoe Unit inmates during a Kolbe Retreat last month Joseph s Catholic Church in Dilley, has been a tremendous help for us, offering the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist at Mass twice each month. The men look forward to seeing him; he is such a wonderful man of God. We have so many that play roles behind the scenes that are too numerous to mention. Please know that each one of you is appreciated and loved for your support of these men who have made some poor choices but are seeking a new life in Christ. New volunteers are always welcome. We provide training for volunteers who serve at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice prisons. We had 127 volunteers participate in our first training session, which was held back in January. The Holy Spirit is alive at St. Mark the Evangelist and is leading us on a fantastic journey to visit the least of our brothers! For more information, please contact Gerald Gaenslen at (210) or ggaenslen@gmail.com. We are happy to share our ministry with you! Gerald Gaenslen is the ministry lead for the Criminal Justice Ministry.

5 2018 The Winged Lion page 5 Helping children receive God s Word in their hearts St. Mark s recently brought back its Children s Liturgy of the Word program, which takes place during the 10 a.m. Mass on Sundays. During Mass time, children are invited to listen to the Word at their level. We use the Magnifikid prayer guide to help children pray and follow Sunday Mass. The Magnifikid prayer guide is adapted to children s lives, accompanying them on the path of daily prayer; helping them develop and nourish their spiritual lives; handing on to them our rich Christian spiritual values; and encouraging them to participate fully in the life of the Church. We are looking for adult, teen and There are times in our lives when we feel like we are stuck in a rut. There are times when we know we should be making certain decisions or behaving in a certain way, but we fall short of the mark, and we either go nowhere we fail or we sin. The amazing thing about each human life, as God created it, is that deep within us, no matter how bad things get or how stagnant things may seem, there is always that still, small voice within us calling us back or urging us on based on our individual needs. In certain terms, we consider that call a hunger or a desire or, to use the Greek, an Eros. And the more things to which we turn attempting to satisfy that hunger, the more we discover that the hunger within us can only be satisfied by one thing. That one thing is God. Anything else will leave us wanting for more. Our loving Father designed us to seek Him, and so when we get into life s ruts, we sometimes need help getting unstuck and back on our way middle school volunteers to help lead our youngest parishioners. Adults are also needed to lead this great ministry. There will be opportunities for volunteers to be readers of the Word and teach the little ones good habits for Mass. Volunteers can earn two service hours a week. If you are interested in joining the Children s Liturgy of the Word team, meet us at 9:50 a.m. in the Day Chapel before the Sunday 10 a.m. Mass to participate. It s really that easy! Questions? Contact us at childrensliturgy.stmark@gmail.com. Come be a part of our growing ministry and help bring the Word of the Lord to our youth! RISE: A 30-day challenge for men to live life to the fullest By Scott Byers All your children shall be taught by the lord, great shall be the peace of your children. Isaiah 54:13 back to our search for the Source of all things true, good and beautiful. When I was feeling stuck recently, I happened to receive an advertising a brand new 30-day challenge, specifically I am a changed man. I m absolutely amazed at the impact this has had on me and my family. What a deeply moving experience. designed for Catholic men of the 21st century. I signed up and completed the challenge during its first round from January through February of this year. It was a great program--very well done with a daily reminder, a video on a weekly topic and a challenge to complete that day. It gave me some traction but not enough to free myself from the rut. So, I started asking some guys in our parish to do the challenge with me. There were nine of us who completed the Each day was a message that I needed to hear. Simple but transformative....cannot wait to see what is next. challenge during its second round as a Lenten observation. For me, it was 10 times better, giving each of us a sounding board and allowing us to benefit from each other s experience. This program is just the push that every man needs to get back on the road of life. It is a call to focus on our roles as sons, brothers, husbands and fathers. The next round begins on Apr. 9. If you read this article after this date, there will be more rounds coming up that you can join. Go to to find out more and sign up for a life changing adventure. Jack Sacco has lectured widely on the true and astounding scientific discoveries about the Shroud, including appearances at the University of Notre Dame and Yale University as well as to groups large and small throughout the United States. He has also given a special presentation before the Royal Families of Europe. Fact is separated from fiction in this revealing look at the scientific investigations of the famed Shroud of Turin. For years, myths about the Shroud have confused the public. Now, Jack Sacco shares his discoveries and reveals the truth about the Shroud of Turin. Join us on Wednesday, April 25, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Christopher Hall for The Science of the Shroud of Turin. This is a FREE event; however, due to limited seating, an RSVP is required. Please RSVP to Bill Faucher at (210) or bill.faucher@gmail.com. This past February, St. Mark s embarked on a new and exciting endeavor, launching The Event Center at St. Mark s as one of San Antonio s newest event venues. Formerly referred to as Aquinas Hall, The Event Center at St. Mark s is located on West Campus in the building nearest the 281 access road. If you haven t taken time to see the hall in the last few months, you need to check it out as soon as possible. Many of you are familiar with our journey over the past couple of years as several fellow parishioners have invested a tremendous amount of time and talent to turn the former Church of Christ sanctuary into a beautiful and spacious banquet hall. The changes made to this structure have been a part of what are calling Phase I, which is almost complete. The newly remodeled hall measures 5,420 sq. ft. and boasts dark wood floors, high ceilings, stylish light fixtures and a raised, carpeted two-tiered stage. And because the whole floor is danceable, a dance floor can be set up any where anywhere in the room. The Event Center at St. Mark s seats up 400 people and is great for both midsized events and large occasions. Amazing features include: Reception/Pre-Function Area: Roomy, dark wood hallway is great for silent auctions, cocktail or buffet area, event registration, sales area for conferences and other social gatherings Stage: Raised, carpeted two-tiered stage is excellent for DJs, bands, pianos, head tables, or bride/groom table Projector & Screen: Large, retractable projector screen and ceiling-mounted projector make video presentations unobtrusive Green Room: Spacious two-room suite that also serves as a bride s room is perfect for guest speakers, VIP s or entourage and, of course, brides and their bridesmaids Kitchen: Fully functioning kitchen has plenty of flat surfaces for preparing food and plating entrees as well as easy access for loading and unloading Parking: Ample parking lot accommodates 350 vehicles and has several handicap spaces available as well as bus parking; parking garage located next door is available to event center guests after 5pm and on weekends Though absolutely perfect for wedding receptions, The Event Center at St. Mark s is the ideal venue for awards or sports banquets, graduations, musical presentations/recitals, video presentations, corporate events, conferences, business networking luncheons, rehearsal dinners, quinceañeras, dances, non-catholic wedding ceremonies, birthday or anniversary parties, school, class or family reunions and retreats. With Phase I of West Campus almost complete, the excitement for Phase II is brewing. Some of the items on the Phase II to-do list are exterior painting and landscaping, upgrading breakout rooms with new carpeting and paint and upgrading the ladies restroom located near the banquet hall. Bottom line? The venue is spacious and elegant and the price is great. Make your next special milestone event memorable by booking The Event Center at St. Mark s now. If you have any time or talents that you can contribute toward this endeavor, contact the pastoral office at (210)

7 The Winged Lion 2018 page 7 TLF seeking volunteers for Pumpkin Patch 2018 By Karen Bell It is time to start planning for Pumpkin Patch 2018 at St. Mark s! We are always trying to think of ways to expand or improve the pumpkin patch in order to promote, inform and raise funds for Traveling Loaves & Fishes (TLF). The patch is a very big undertaking, and there is a need for 24 coordinators. I personally invite you to be a part of the 2018 planning team. Please consider volunteering! Why volunteer? The TLF pumpkin patch is an event for the entire community--the St. Mark s parish community as well as the San Antonio community. Many hands make it possible to ensure the success of this fundraising effort, which enables TLF to provide meals, clothing and dignity to our brothers and sister in need. The mission of TLF is to relieve immediate hunger and help the families they serve take the next step toward emotional and spiritual healing. With dignity and respect, our caring volunteers prepare and deliver wholesome meals, clothing essentials and hygiene products to our homeless brothers and sisters twice a day. Proceeds from the pumpkin patch help make all this possible. The first pumpkin patch planning meet will be on Mon., Apr. 30 at 7 p.m. We will be meeting in the Traveling Loaves and Fishes annex at West Campus (building #13). If you have any questions, contact Karen Bell at (210) or karen.s.bell@hotmail.com. Karen Bell is the lead pumpkin patch coordinator for Traveling Loaves and Fishes.
