Please send to Thank You to the Daughters of the King... Stephanie Stathan, Rev. Mary Richard, Jan Jones, Jo Ann Horton, Rev. Rowena White, Garrett Boyte, Sara Townsend Last month the St. Mary Chapter of the Daughters of the King, Holy Cross, went to the University Health Pediatrics floor for St. Jude s patients. We visited with the children and their families, prayed with them, and gave each child a small teddy bear. As always in ministry, we received more than we brought, and we plan to visit again. DOK President Jo Ann Horton received this thank-you note from University Health Pediatrics: Dear Jo Ann: The Child Life Department of the Children s Hospital at University Health would like to thank you for your recent visit and donation of stuffed animals. We know sometimes it takes more than medicine to make a child feel better. You have truly helped make life a little brighter for our patients and their families. Thank you for thinking of our patients. Sincerely, Stephanie R. Stathan, CCLS We are so happy to have a Daughters of the King chapter at Holy Cross. The ministry of the DOK adds to and enhances our ministry to people who are in much need but are often forgotten. The Daughters are active in learning, in worshiping, in serving, and in prayer. The motto of DOK is: I am but one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I ought to do. What I ought to do, by the Grace of God, I will do. Lord, what will you have me do? If you feel God tugging at your heart in the direction of service, evangelism, and/or prayer, or if you would like to know more about the Daughters of the King, please call or ask Jo Ann Horton. She would love to hear from you, and we would love for you to join our fellowship. The Daughters of the King meets the second Tuesday evening each month for Communion and spiritual learning. The Rev. Mary B. Richard
2 ... and Thank You from Garrett Boyte By now Garrett Boyte is most likely deep into his studies as he enters his third and final year of seminary at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. We are all grateful to him for his enthusiastic service at Holy Cross and in the neighborhood ministries. After he left, Garrett sent the following message: Holy Cross Family, Thank you all so much for making this summer such a joy! Your faithfulness and love make me feel so welcome, and I will continue to keep this parish in my prayers. I love you all, and I can t wait to see you again! With love, Garrett On Saturday, November 24, Garrett will be ordained to the deaconate at St. James, Alexandria. After graduation next spring, the Bishop will ordain him to the Priesthood and assign him to a church in our diocese. We look forward to sharing the bright future that awaits him. The question we are all going to face is the question we are least prepared for. It is: What have you done for the least of mine? As long as there are strangers; hungry, naked, and sick people; prisoners, refugees, and slaves; people who are handicapped physically, mentally, or emotionally; people without work, a home, or a piece of land, there will be that haunting question from the throne of judgment: What have you done for the least of mine? Henri Nouwen in Seeds of Hope Daily Feast: Meditations on the Word, Year B Louisville: Westminster, John Knox Press, 2012 The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost: Year B, Proper 17, Track 2 September 2, 2018 Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9 Psalm 15 James 1:17-27 Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, (James 1:17-27) Throughout history, in all Christian traditions and world religions, women have proven to be the doers of the world, daily serving the poor. The majority of the poor also continue to be women and children. How can the church be better doers, not merely hearers, of the word in today s world? Haruko Nawata Ward The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost: Year B, Proper 18, Track 2 September 9, 2018 Isaiah 35:4-7a Psalm 146 James 2:1-10, [11-13], Mark 7:24-37 (Mark 7:24-37) Jesus ministry affirms and anticipates the church s need to share God s gifts of grace, peace, and healing with all people. The persons who are healed do not approach Jesus alone but are aided by others. the young girl is freed of demon possession because her mother pleads on her behalf. the deaf man is brought to Jesus by friends who beg for his healing. In these stories it is not the faith of the disabled persons that brings about their healing, but the active faith of their companions. Their stories remind us to approach Christ on behalf of others and actively seek the wellbeing of those who need help and care. Dawn Ottoni Wilhelm

5 The Bishop s Visitation Sunday, September 16 Bishop Owensby will preach and celebrate at the 11:00 Eucharist followed by a spaghetti lunch One of the important events we look forward to each year is Bishop Owensby s Visitation on or near Holy Cross Name Day (September 14). This year he will be with us on September 16 to preach and celebrate the Eucharist at the 11:00 service. Afterwards, we will continue the celebration in the Undercroft with a spaghetti feast prepared by Lynn and Monty Walford. Please mark your calendar and be sure to be in church that day! It s always a treat when the Bishop and Joy come! School Has Started Again this year, as our children return to school, we are conscious that some schools do not have the supplies they need for the number of children in their classrooms. As a Bread or Stones member, Holy Cross has committed to providing school supplies for the schools served by the Volunteers of America Lighthouse Program. The schools they serve are Forest Hill Elementary, J. S. Clark Elementary, University Elementary, Broadmoor Middle, and Fair Park High. Please help us collect the supplies the children of our community need by bringing whatever you can to Holy Cross and placing your donation in the baskets at the entrance to the Nave. The following items are most needed: crayons colored pencils paint, watercolors craft supplies A4 copy paper erasers backpacks folders pencil cases coloring books white cardstock notebook paper envelopes staples correction tape paper towels Lysol wipes facial tissues wood pencils mechanical pencils dry erase markers whiteboard cleaner electric pencil sharpeners (one will be given to each classroom) If you would rather help with the cost of school supplies, please send or bring your check to the church office, marked School Supplies, and we will give the donation to the VOA to purchase what the schools need. The children and teachers will appreciate our involvement, interest, and efforts to help ensure that the learning experience in all our schools is good for all our children. Thank you!

7 Christ gives Himself eternally that is, through His self-giving God comes into the soul whether we know it or not. Holy Communion is one of the great ways we actualize this and also give ourselves in turn, to be used in the Divine work of redeeming the world.
