2 St. John s Day Service August 19, 2018 WELCOME It is good to gather once again for this annual St. John s Day observance at our mother church and to celebrate the unity we share in Jesus Christ. A cordial welcome is extended to our guests and friends. We especially welcome the Rev. James Bangle, retired pastor from Marion, VA, as our guest preacher. Pastor Bangle was born in Charlotte, NC and grew up in North and South Carolina. During his seminary internship in Charlottesville he became a part of the Virginia Synod where he has served since He was pastor of St. Matthew Lutheran in Richmond, VA for six years and Ebenezer Lutheran in Marion, VA for thirty-one years during which he also had a fifteen-year stint as an FBI Chaplain. Jim retired in In retirement he has completed three interim ministries, the third of which was at Holy Trinity, Wytheville. He is currently Interim Pastor of Holy Trinity in Kingsport, TN and continues to practice part-time as a psychotherapist. Pastor Bangle has had a long interest in local church history and on the 2oo th anniversary of Ebenezer Congregation rode a horse to the Old Ebenezer Church to portray Father George Daniel Flohr. Pastor Bangle and his wife Jo live n Marion. They have five children and seven grandchildren scattered all over the country. They travel when they can. TODAY'S WORSHIP Our service today is a celebration of 100 years of Lutheran liturgy! Five different hymnals are represented: The Common Service Book with Hymnal (1917), The Service Book and Hymnal (1958), Lutheran Book of Worship (1978), This Far By Faith (1999), and Evangelical Lutheran Worship (2006). These words connect us to generations of believers that have gone before us and generations yet to come, all of whom are one in Christ. COMMUNION All Christians who believe that Christ is present in the Sacrament and are properly prepared in their own church are invited to participate. Communion will be by intinction. All children who are not yet prepared for communion are invited to come to the Lord s table for a blessing. Gluten free wafers are available upon request. 8 PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Ever-loving God, your Son gives himself as living bread for the life of the world. Fill us with such a knowledge of his presence that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life to serve you continually, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. We sit. FIRST READING: Proverbs 9:1-6 Wisdom is portrayed as a woman who invites people to partake of her banquet. Just as ordinary food is necessary for physical life, Wisdom s food insight and understanding is necessary for fullness of life with God. Partaking of Wisdom s banquet is the way to life. 1Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars. 2She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table. 3She has sent out her servant-girls, she calls from the highest places in the town, 4 You that are simple, turn in here! To those without sense she says, 5 Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. 6Lay aside immaturity, and live, and walk in the way of insight. A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Psalm 34:9-14 9Fear the LORD, you saints of the LORD, for those who fear the LORD lack nothing. 10The lions are in want and suffer hunger, but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is good. 8

SECOND READING: Ephesians 5:15-20 True wisdom integrates our new reality in Christ with our Christian fellowship and daily conduct. Because we are filled with the Spirit, Christians regularly rejoice together, give thanks to God for one another, and care for one another. In this way we revere our Lord Jesus Christ. 15Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, 16making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17 So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, 20 giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. We stand. GOSPEL: John 6:51-58 P: The holy gospel according to St. John, the 6th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. In John s gospel, the feeding of the five thousand leads to extended teaching in which Jesus identifies himself as the true bread of life. Finally, in these verses, he makes a connection that would not be understood until after his death, in light of the church s celebration of holy communion. [Jesus said,] 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 9

10 52The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53 So Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: We give thee praise and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and tender mercies. We bless thee for the love which hath created and doth sustain us from day to day. We praise thee for the gift of thy Son, our Saviour, through whom thou hast made known thy grace. We thank thee for the Holy Ghost, the Comforter; for thy Holy Church, for the Means of Grace, and for the lives of all faithful and godly men and women, and for the hope of the life to come; C: We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord. 15 PREFACE It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Christ our Lord; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: HOLY HOLY HOLY WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth. In mercy for our fallen world you gave your only Son, that all those who believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. We give thanks to you for the salvation you have prepared for us through Jesus Christ.
