We pray that our time of worship would give you the chance to offer your prayer and praise, hear anew the Word of God, and receive our Lord s presence in Holy Communion. The order of worship, and many of the prayers, can be found in the worship bulletin. Hymns and worship music can be found in the red worship books. Hymns are in the back of the worship book, with the large numbers at the top of the page. Service music is in the front of the worship book, with the small numbers on the bottom of the page. Every Sunday we share Holy Communion. All are welcome to the Lord s Table. When invited by the ushers, please come forward using the center aisle. To receive the bread, hold out your hand, palm up. The minister will place the bread in your hand along with the words "The Body of Christ, given for you." You may respond, "Amen," or "Thanks be to God." Standing at the cup, dip the bread into the wine or juice. The Communion Server will say, "The blood of Christ, shed for you." You may respond "Amen," or "Thanks be to God," before consuming the wine/juice-soaked bread. Then, return to your seat by way of the side aisles. Note: Grape juice (lighter in color) is available as well as wine (darker in color). Gluten-free wafers are available on the table between the servers---after receiving the words of promise, simply take a wafer, dip it into the wine/juice also provided on the table, eat both and return to your seat by way of the side aisles." *Please stand as you are able. 2

They traveled from Rephidim, came into the Sinai desert, and set up camp there. Israel camped there in front of the mountain while Moses went up to God. The Lord called to him from the mountain, This is what you should say to Jacob s household and declare to the Israelites: You saw what I did to the Egyptians, and how I lifted you up on eagles wings and brought you to me. So now, if you faithfully obey me and stay true to my covenant, you will be my most precious possession out of all the peoples, since the whole earth belongs to me. You will be a kingdom of priests for me and a holy nation. These are the words you should say to the Israelites. 8 Come Walk with Grace Our third annual Time To Fly Fundraising Event is happening on Saturday, June 21st, 2014 at Harriet Island Regional Park in St. Paul. Time to Fly raises money to support research for children s cancer. We are looking for runners, walkers, kid runners and supporters! We have had lots of fun the past two years and would love to have more people join in the fun! If running or walking is not your thing, then we would love your donation, which is tax deductible. Help Feed the Children Grace Lutheran Church is stepping up to the plate to help children and families on the east side of St. Paul get enough food to eat this summer. In addition to our first Sunday of the month collection of non-perishable food items and money, we are making Merrick Community Food Shelf our mission of the month for June. We have also set up a small display in the narthex of the church on ideas of items needed by the food shelf and particularly the children this summer. Please check it out. As many of you know, during the school year children of families who meet financial guidelines receive free or subsidized breakfast and lunch at school but school is over and these children still need to eat. Please help to fill the additional demand made on the food shelf. No one should go hungry when we share of our abundance. Thank you for caring and making a difference. The Mission Committee 8

For over 10 years the Congregation of Grace has sponsored students in Sierra Leone who, without our financial help, would be unable to attend classes and face a bleak future. For ONLY $65.00 per student you can give a child a year s worth of education and more important, hope. There is no overhead with this program as Grace works in conjunction with SLAI (Sierra Leone Aid Initiative) which has staff already in place in Sierra Leone to identify children without the means to go to school. Gifts in any amount are gratefully appreciated and put to good use. 10 On Monday, July 28 at 6:30p, the District 1 Community Council has invited Ramsey County and the City of Saint Paul's Public Works departments to come talk about the rebuild of White Bear Avenue that will happen in 2015, and the Margaret Street Bikeway that will be put in place in The neighbors are invited to come hear about the projects, ask questions and give input. The rebuild of White Bear Avenue will take place between I-94 and Margaret Street and will involve re-routing traffic during the process. The community hearing will be held at Grace Lutheran Church. Please plan on attending if you would like to find out the changes being made to White Bear Avenue. BOOK REVIEW-Wide Welcome, How the Unsettling Presence of Newcomers Can Save A Church, Jessicah Krey Duckworth, 2013, describes how we engage the world by welcoming newcomers. The book lays out designs for newcomer welcome that are local and particular. A church is composed of an established congregation which cares for current members and congregational identity, and the disestablished congregation, which gains purpose and identity in the task of relating to newcomers. Being attentive to the questions, insights and experiences of newcomers causes change in the newcomer and in the church. ON YOUR HONOR BOOK SALE An interactive-trust mood will be the basis for a continuous book sale at Grace Lutheran. We hope to have the sale is organized to begin in July, Books available for purchase will be placed on shelves identified as FOR SALE. Committee members will categorize donated books before they are placed on the shelf. Book prices are $.25 for paperbacks and $1.00 for hardcovers. The buy-a-book procedure is simple. Visit the library in church nathex. Check out any book to read. Books available for purchase in the on-going sale are on shelves with a BOOKS FOR SALE sign. 11 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is August 12, 2014, Grace Lutheran participates in the East Side of St. Paul celebration at the Conway Recreation Center. Grace loans tables to District 1 Community Services. Hundreds of East-Siders attend, sharing a meal, viewing vendor displays and learning about the East Side of St. Paul. Outreach Committee will be seeking volunteer help for NNO on August 12 in late afternoon. Stewardship Notes Stewardship and the Christian Life-W.H. Greever ( Realities in The Christian Religion, private printing, 1951) has indicated that the same things may be said about financial stewardship as may be said about Christianity in general: The motive is love and gratitude The purpose is to glorify God The guide is the revealed will of God The measure is the sacrificial spirit of Christ The efficiency is the power of God s grace The reward is a good conscience and the anticipated Well done! of the Lord. Giving to God by Mark Allan Powell p.114 Musical Notes Who was nicknames Miss Gospel Music? Who wrote Lord, Don t Move the Mountain with her friend Mahalia Jackson? Who also wrote Sweet, Sweet Spirit? Who was given the Gospel Music Composer of the Year award for both 1960 and 1961? The answer is Doris Akers, who was given the distinct honor of having the 1987 Catholic hymnal named after the hymn she composed in 1955 and that we are singing today, Lead Me, Guide Me. Her hymns have been called National Treasures by the Smithsonian Institution. Trivia: of all things, Doris Akers is buried at Lakewood Cemetary in Minneapolis. 11
