Hear, O Israel. Deuteronomy 5:1-21; 6:4-9 October 11, 2015
Grace Lutheran Church October 11, :30 a.m. Welcome to worship at Grace! May this time of gathering in Christian community bless you and enable you to be a blessing to others. Special welcome to Newcomers in the name of Christ! We pray that our time of worship would give you the chance to offer your prayer and praise, hear anew the Word of God, and receive our Lord s presence in Holy Communion. Enlarged print bulletins and personal assist hearing devices are available. Please see an usher for assistance. Children s bulletins and activity bags are also available. The order of worship, and many of the prayers, can be found in the worship bulletin. Hymns and worship music can be found in the red worship books. Hymns are in the back of the worship book, with the large numbers at the top of the page. Service music is in the front of the worship book, with the small numbers on the bottom of the page. Every Sunday we share Holy Communion. All are welcome to the Lord s Table. When invited by the ushers, please come forward using the center aisle. To receive the bread, hold out your hand, palm up. The minister will place a wafer in your hand along with the words: The body of Christ, given for you. You may respond: Amen or Thanks be to God before consuming it. Move to the wine. The minister will offer the tray of cups to you. The inner cups will hold white grape juice. The outer cups will be filled with red wine. Take a cup as the minister says: The blood of Christ, shed for you. You may respond: Amen or Thanks be to God and drink the contents. Move toward the side aisle and place your empty cup in the receptacle before returning to your seat by way of the side aisles. Gluten-free wafers are available on the table between the two teams of servers. After receiving the words of promise, simply take a wafer from those on the table and consume it. Move to the minister with the tray of wine and grape juice and receive the promise as you take a cup. Drink it, place it in the receptacle to the side, and return to your seat by way of the side aisles. 2
Prelude Gathering Hymn ELW #519 Spirit of God, Descend Open Your Ears, O Faithful People Greeting P: Be not afraid. Be welcome in this holy place, where we gather to hear God s word. C: We are God s people, and we are here to remember together God s ways. All: Amen. Confession and Forgiveness P: God has given us instruction on how to live; and yet, following these commands is far from simple. Let us confess our sins before God and one another. Pause for silence and reflection. P: Great One, Holy One, C: Body and soul, we belong to you. This simple truth might guide our lives. It might, but it seldom does, and that is where we go astray. Forgive us for being of two minds. Forgive us our difficulty in following you with full devotion. Amen. P: Where our love for God is complex, and sometimes divided, God s love for us is always clear. In the name of Jesus Christ, I declare this truth: you are precious to God, and you are forgiven. C: Amen. Hymn of Praise p. 167 Glory to God Prayer of the Day L: Let us pray: C: God of mountaintop and plain, let this be a day of remembering again what we choose to forget. In the repeating of these teachings, call us to faithfulness. Amen. 3
Welcome and Announcements Children s Message Anthem Kids of the Kingdom Scripture Reading-Deuteronomy 5:1-21; 6:4-9 Moses convened all Israel, and said to them: Hear, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances that I am addressing to you today; you shall learn them and observe them diligently. The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. Not with our ancestors did the Lord make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the fire. (At that time I was standing between the Lord and you to declare to you the words of the Lord; for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lordwill not acquit anyone who misuses his name. Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day. Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. Neither shall you commit adultery. Neither shall you steal. Neither shall you bear false witness against your neighbor. Neither shall you covet your neighbor s wife. Neither shall you desire your neighbor s house, or field, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. 4
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. L: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Sermon Hymn of the Day ELW 661 Pastor Karen Williams I Love to Tell the Story *Statement of Faith: The Apostles Creed L: Let us confess our faith, using the words of the Apostles Creed. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen 5
*Prayers of the Church. L: Lord of mercy, C: You hear our prayer. The prayers end with: P: With all thanks for your faithfulness, we pray in the name of Christ Jesus, our Lord. C: Amen. Offertory and Offertory Offering Hymn ELW #744 vs,1 I Love to Tell the Story Lord. Be Glorified Offering Prayer Love God with heart, soul, and might is the root of all offerings. Our financial choices, too, are a way of practicing the commandments, the love to which God calls us. Bless today s offering for your glory. Amen. Offering Hymn ELW #744 vs, 4 Lord. Be Glorified Communion Liturgy *Great Thanksgiving P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Words of Institution The Lord s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the pow'r, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen 6
Lamb of God (inside back cover) Distribution Hymn ELW 800 Spirit of God Post-Communion Blessing and Prayer L: We need not strive for what is offered here at this table; it cannot be earned. Rest in the goodness of the Lord. This is Christ s table, the meeting place of heaven and earth, where all are welcome. Send us forth to do your work. C: Amen Sending Hymn ELW 821 Shout to the Lord *Dismissal L: Go in peace. Serve the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! All Intouch articles need to be ed no later than the 3rd Friday of the month. There are no exceptions to this. CAN YOU HELP? Thanks to the generosity of Thrivent Financial and the planning/support of the Mission Committee, Grace will hold it s first Free Community Brunch onsaturday, November 7 at 11 a.m. We will need lots of help from the Congregation. We need publicity, cooking, serving, set-up and clean-up. Please mark your calendars, think about how you can participate and watch for upcoming details regarding this event. Any questions, see or call Sue Atneosen Thank you. Musical Notes Interestingly, as the Lutheran church in Europe celebrated the Pietist movement in Europe during the late 1600 s and promoted such music created by Bach, the Jews of Eastern Europe were celebrating the Hasidic movement. The word Hasid means pious. The hymn #519 Open Your Ears is based on a Hasidic tune that Father William Jabusch found while working in Israel. His hymn first appeared in the Hymnal for Young Children published in Trivia: The last 8 contestants for the 2008 finale of American Idol sang Shout to the Lord with a slight lyrics change, switching Shepherd in place of Jesus without asking permission from the composer Darlene Zschech. The song was sung again the following night with the correct lyrics. 8
New Books In Grace Library following books have been added to the Grace Library. The Tenderness of Wolves, Stef Penney Return to Holly Springs, Jan Karon large print Committee of the Month for October The worship and music committee consists of the pastor, choir directors, organist, representatives of Chancel Care and ushers, and anyone else interested in the worship and music life of Grace Lutheran. We schedule the acolytes, communion assistants, geek squad, lay readers, liturgists and ushers for every service. We also schedule piano tuning for 7 pianos (Sanctuary, Tower rooms, choir rooms and Sunday School). Chancel Care is responsible for the Eternal Candle, oil for the other candles, Communion Wine and wafers (including gluten-free wafers), paraments and banners, palms for Palm Sunday and keep theashes for Ash Wednesday. They order flowers for Sundays and organize the Christmas poinsettias and Easter flower garden and help with weddings. Members of the committee choose the hymns and liturgy for each service and help with general planning. This includes the Advent and Lenten mid-week services, and special services, such as the graduate recognition and reception and the blessing of the animals (started this year). The choir directors choose music appropriate to the text for the Sunday, either using music from their libraries or purchasing new occasionally. Our organist accompanies the hymns and chooses prelude, postlude and offertory music to enhance the service. She enlists others to provide music also and has written parts for instruments and the bell choir. The ushers assist with handing out bulletins, taking the offering, ushering at Communion and keeping an eye on the rest of the building during the service. We welcome anyone who is interested in the worship and music life of Grace Lutheran to join our committee. Current members are: Pastor Karen Williams, Kathleen Hollar, Barb Holtan (chair), Barb Kinney (chancel care), Pete & Nancy Zitzewitz, Olaf Malmin, Connie Smeby, Jan Steingas, Norm Walby (ushers), Dave Hunter (liaison to council). BRIDGE THE GAP UPDATE - Many thank yous for the response in September. A total of $3, has been contributed so far. You may check the chart in the Narthex for weekly updates. Please continue your support of this vital mission in October, also. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! To everyone who attended the fund raising dinner and auction Celebrate the Seasons, to all who donated financially and with gift items, and to the Decorating Task Force who worked so hard and gave so generously of their time and effort. We have preliminary results of slightly over $2, being raised. This money will help with carpeting and décor update at Grace. It was a lovely evening and we had over 110 items to bid on and a drawing for a 32 TV won by Joel Smeby and a lovely quilt won by Kari Fredrickson. The support of the Congregation is greatly appreciated. 10
October s Mission of the Month is Houses for Haiti, Inc.. Houses for Haiti was founded in April of 2008 by two sisters, Diane Albright and Linda Satriano who grew up on the east side of St. Paul Houses for Haiti is a non-profit organization dedicated to building houses for homeless families living on the streets of Cite Soleil, Haiti, the poorest slum in the Western Hemisphere. With no jobs, education, or public assistance, many families have no hope for ever living in a concrete dwelling. Houses for Haiti was founded on the belief that every person deserves to live in a safe environment. Less than 2% income for the organization goes to overhead. Their goal is $10,000 for 2015 enough to build 2 houses. They have a small tract of land to build 4 houses 14 x 28 each. The home that they build employs 5-7 Haitian workers who will earn twice the average and therefore help to strengthen the local economy. Each year they lead a mission trip of volunteers who paint the homes. Houses for Haiti have built around 15 homes. Please prayerfully consider supporting this specific small ministry which reaches out to God s people in need. Use your blue multi-purpose envelope and mark Mission of the Month. Thank you for your consideration.l The Sheridan Story-We have an opportunity to help school children right here on the East Side through The Sheridan Story. Over 200,000 children in the state of Minnesota live in food insecurity and do not always know if they will receive their next meal. The Sheridan Story s purpose is to respond to this need by closing the weekend food gap between Friday and Monday, when children are not able to participate in the free or Reduced meal programs at school. We have been asked to partner with First Lutheran Church to provide food for the children at Dayton s Bluff Elementary where 93.3% of the 474 students are on free or reduced lunch. Our church now has an electronic giving link.. Go to The Sheridan Story/sponsors to find it or write a check to Grace with the Sheridan Story in the memo line. $12 per month or $130 per the school year will provide on child with weekend food bags throughout the school year.
