Wednesday DECEMBER 21 CHRISTMAS CONFESSIONS BEGINNING AT 5:00 PM [CONCLUDING WITH A DIVINE LITURGY AT 7:00 PM FOR THOSE WHO CAN STAY] CONFESSION; RECONCILIATION - ONE OF THE JOYS OF CHRISTMAS! One of the traditions of Ukrainian Catholics through the ages is the custom of making a good confession before Christmas. We can be so proud of our Faithful for this! At Christmas we, above all else, celebrate the coming into the world of the Messiah the Saviour Who was promise for ages. The one who would lead us out of bondage for once and for all and bring truth and peace and happiness to our lives and life eternal! The Simplest Form of Confession A more reflective form of the Sacrament of Confession can be found at the bottom of this article, but as the rite itself is secondary to the crucial aspects of the Sacrament, we ll narrow it down to the basics The first priority is that we want to make an honest confession of sins (honest to ourselves and honest to our Lord). Then we want to have a sincere sorrow for them (we are not certain about this or feel that maybe our regret is lacking? Ask our Lord for the grace of sincere repentance!) At the same time, we want to firmly resolve to avoid them in the future. And finally, there should be a willingness on our part to make restitution when called for. So, here are simple instructions. 1. Cross yourself (traditionally: three times) 2. The Priest will bless you and say, Glory to Jesus Christ Слава Ісусу Христу! 3. He may ask (or just tell him) how long it has been since you last came to Confession. 4. Tell your sins. (He may also ask a few questions to help you in this) 5. Conclude by saying something like, For these sins, and for all my sins which I cannot remember, I am truly sorry because I have offended God Who is good. I sincerely repent and I promise, with the help of God, to better my way of life. And

so, I ask you for saving penance and absolution 6. The priest may offer some counselling and he will assign to you a Penance for you to say/perform later. 7. The priest will ask you to make an act of Contrition. You might have leaned a certain version, which is fine, but the following ancient prayer is also customary you cross yourself for each phrase as you pray. + God be merciful to me a sinner. + God, cleanse me of my sins and have mercy on me. + I have sinned without number, forgive me, O Lord. 8. The priest will then give you Absolution. At the conclusion of which you cross yourself. Then He will say words to the effect of Go in Peace (John 8:11) That s it. You go and pray/perform your penance immediately or as soon as possible. And. Have a really wonderful Christmas! Here is a meditation as we prepare for confession. An Examination of Conscience THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (Exodus 20: 1-17) I. I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods besides me..do I worship God in spirit and truth and give God praise due him?.do I make a god out of my work, my possessions, or my image in the eyes of others so that these rule my life instead of God?.Have I tried to grow in the knowledge of God through daily prayer and scripture reading?.have I ever dabbled in the occult or given credence to horoscopes, Ouija boards, channeling, tarot cards, or fortune telling?.have I taken time to teach my family about the ways of God and to pray with them? II. You Shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain..have I been hypocritical by adhering to a ritualistic observance while my heart has been far from God?

.Have I resorted to profane language by cursing and swearing?.in conversation, have I passively acceded to slander and to jokes aimed at demeaning religion, the church, or God s authority? III. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy..have I allowed myself to become so dominated by my work or chores that I have not set aside Sunday for spiritual and family activities?.have I attended the Divine Liturgy every Sunday and major Holiday?.In my prayer and attendance at the Liturgy, am I content with a passive observance rather than devoting myself to genuine worship of the Lord? Do I do things on Sunday that I really don t need to if I better plan my week? IV. Honor your father and mother..as a young person in the family home, do I listen to, respect, and obey my parents when they instruct me?.as an adult, do I visit and care for my parents in their old age?.do I harbor short-term or long-standing resentments toward my parents? Do I blame my parents for my own shortcomings? V. You shall not kill..have I ever struck anyone in anger, intending to injure them?.have I ever advocated abortion, either through my opinions in conversation or by actively assisting someone in procuring an abortion?.have I ever endangered myself or the life of another person through the taking of drugs or the abuse of alcohol? VI. You shall not commit adultery..have I engaged in sexual activity outside of marriage?.have I given my mind over to lustful thoughts or fantasies?.have I read pornography or watched indecent movies or television shows?.in conversation, have I told or enjoyed lewd or obscene jokes and stories?

VII. You Shall not steal..have I taken anything that did not belong to me?.have I been dishonest in the payment of my taxes or in the submission of expense accounts in my business?.have I wasted time and cheated my employer by not doing a full day s work for my wages?.have I been extravagant in my manner of life, to neglect of the poor of the world?.have I been irresponsible and neglected the needs of my family by wasting money on gambling or betting? VIII. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor..have I defamed the good name of another person by taking part in gossip or slander?.have I injured the reputation of another person by speaking about their failures and sins with little desire or intention to help them?.have I condoned prejudice and hatred toward people of another nationality, race, or religion? IX. You shall not covet your neighbor s wife..have I sought the affections of another s spouse?.have I contemplated infidelity to my spouse?.have I upheld the dignity of my spouse in all circumstances?.have I rejected my family in my heart, wishing to distance myself emotionally and personally from them? X. You shall not covet your neighbor s good..do I habitually compare myself with other in terms or wealth, status, and financial security?.am I jealous of the personal qualities of other, or envious of their possessions or success?.do I keep my finances in order and exercise proper stewardship over what is mine?.do I support my church sufficiently and give generously to the poor?

A Longer Form of Confession The following Rite is especially appropriate as a short penitential service. The priest puts on his epitrakhyl (stole) and says: +Blessed be our God always, now and for ever and ever. Amen Then if he chooses, he may say the Trisagion prayers. +Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and Immortal have mercy on us. Thrice +Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen Trinity most holy, have mercy on us. Cleanse us of our sins, O Lord; pardon our transgressions, O Master; look upon our weaknesses and heal them, O Holy One; for the sake of you name. Lord, have mercy. Thrice +Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Priest: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, +Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen They then recite the following troparia: Have mercy on us, O lord, have mercy on us. We sinners bring this appeal to You, O Master, for we have no defense. Have mercy on us. +Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; Lord, have mercy on us, for we have put our trust in You. Be not exceedingly angry with us and do not remember our transgressions, but look upon us now with compassion. Redeem us from our enemies, for You are our God, and we are Your people. We are all the work of Your hands, and we call upon Your name. Now and for ever and ever, Amen Open the doors of mercy to us, O blessed Mother of God, that we who hope in you may not perish but be delivered by you from danger, for you are the salvation of Christian people. The priest then judiciously questions the person who has come to confession and assigns a penance (epitemai). Then he says:

If he chooses, the priest may say this prayer: Priest: Let us pray to the Lord. Bow your head. O Lord, God of Your servants salvation, merciful and gracious and patient, You grieve over our wicked deeds, and desire not the death of a sinner but rather that he turn to You and live: Come now and show compassion to Your servant N., and grant him (her) a disposition or repentance, forgiveness of sins and pardon; absolving him (her) of every fault, deliberate and undeliberate. Reconcile and untie him (her) to your holy Church through Christ Jesus our Lord with Whom power and majesty belong to You, now and for ever and ever. Then. go to the top of this article for the rest...

Knights of Columbus News: We will have only one more coffee house this month after mass on Dec. 18th Keep Christ in Christmas. Respectfully submitted by Grand Knight Andrew Labay UCWLC NEWS Once again we will be collecting nonperishable food items for Welcome Home. Place in a box at back of church. Christmas Pageant will be on Dec. 18/16. We request all parishioners to attend and support this presentation by our catechism children. On behalf of the UCWLC we want to express our warmest thoughts and best wishes to all our Parishoners and their Families for a Blessed Christmas. May you have Peace in your homes and Joy and Love in your hearts during the Christmas Season. May the New Year bring all of you good health and happiness in Rose Olynyk President Parish Residence Rental: It has been decided that the residence next door to our church should be rented rather than remain vacant until a new permanent pastor is appointed to St Basils This is being done for several reasons with the most important one being a source of revenue to help offset our ongoing deficit. The lease rental could be for anywhere from six months to a year, with an option for possible renewal. We would first like to offer this to our parishioners and/or their extended families. The rental amount is still to be determined and would be at fair market value. After a certain time if there is no interest from our parishioners (so far there has been none) we will offer this to the general public. If you are interested or may know someone who might be interested please contact the parish office at Catechism Classes in our Parish Sunday Dec-18 Christmas Pageant following liturgy Saturday Jan :30 a.m. Classes resume after break

Winter Boots Urgently Needed There is an immediate need for men's winter boots at Siloam Mission. While dropping off our parish donations, it was observed that many clients of Siloam were wearing thin shoes as they stood outside in the meal line. This is not acceptable given our current temperatures. Please bring boots and whatever winter items you can spare. The box at the back of the church is emptied weekly. Remember to involve your children, as this is an important lesson in giving to those less fortunate. Thank you and bless you KUCA Youth Winter Games Bowling: Saturday, Jan 21, 2017 Rossmere Lanes, 1042 Henderson Hwy., Registration 3:30pm, bowling and prizes 4:00-6:00pm Bowling shoes will be provided Curling: Saturday, Feb 25, 2017 W.Kildonan Curling Club, 210 Enniskillen Ave., *ADVANCED RSVP REQUIRED PRIOR TO FEB 16, 2017 Contact your parish KUCA representative Registration 4:00pm, curling 4:30-6:30pm Brooms provided, Clean indoor shoes allowed on ice

CHRISTMAS LETTER OF THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS OF CANADA December 14, 2016 PASTORAL LETTER FROM THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS OF CANADA ON THE OCCASION OF THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD 2016/2017 To the Reverend Clergy, Monastics, Seminarians and Laity of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada: Christ is born! Let Us Glorify Him! The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. (Isaiah 9:2) At the Complines service on the Eve of the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we sing out Z Namy Boh! God is with us! This beautiful hymn evokes in us faith, hope and joy in the awareness that the eternal God loves us so much that He sent His Only-Begotten Son to be with us. God became man, in the person of Jesus Christ, who, in all his works and actions, showed us the unending LOVE and MERCY of His Father. When Pope Francis opened the Year of Mercy, he expressed his hope that all faithful of the Church would be able to rediscover and experience in their lives this unending love and mercy of God. Reflecting on this past year, however, we see that much has happened that troubles our hearts. We have seen the photos of wildfires destroying thousands of homes in Fort McMurray. We weep for Ukraine, where fighting continues, with staggering loss of life. We sympathize with the millions of refugees who have fled Syria, fearing for their lives. We shudder to think that our own government has recently legalized medically assisted suicide. Perhaps we have personally experienced some tragedy or sadness in our own lives. We may be tempted to ask ourselves: Is God truly with us? If He is, where is His love and mercy? When God became man when Jesus Christ was born it was in a lowly hidden cave in the dark of the night. The light of God-With-Us illuminated that cold dark cave and gave warmth to all those present Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, and even the animals. And so it is today in our troubled world with all its challenges. God has not abandoned us! The light of God-With-Us continues to shine forth in humble surprising ways. We see God s mercy in the people who, in many and wonderful ways, gave assistance to the victims of the fires in Fort McMurray and in those who offered refuge or assistance to the refugees from Syria. We see it in the actions of our faithful who send help to the families of fallen soldiers in Ukraine and support the chaplains at the front. We see it in our priests who visit the dying and offer them comfort and hope through the Sacrament of Holy Anointing. We see it in those who pray for peace in the world and those who strive to bring peace, forgiveness and love to others. We see it in priests, nuns and catechists who teach the faithful about God and help them grow in faith. We see it in the humble everyday actions of mothers and fathers

who work for a living and care for their children. And we see it in all concrete acts of love offered by ordinary people who heed the words of Jesus Christ: When I was hungry, you gave me to eat. When I was thirsty, you gave me to drink. When I was naked, you clothed me. When I was sick or in prison, you visited me. Then let our hearts not be troubled! This Christmas, let us sing out God is with us! more fervently than ever! And then let us continue to make it true by allowing the light of Christ to shine through us, in all our words and deeds, so that the Love and Mercy of God may transform our world and bring forth hope, peace and joy. Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, please accept our greetings and best wishes on this feast of Nativity of Our Saviour, Jesus Christ! May every day of the coming year be filled with His light and peace. Just as a newborn baby brings much joy and love to a family, may the birth of Emmanuel God-with-us bring joy and love into your family and your lives. +Lawrence Huculak, OSBM Metropolitan Archbishop of Winnipeg +David Motiuk, Eparchial Bishop of Edmonton +Stephen Chmilar, Eparchial Bishop of Toronto +Ken Nowakowski, Eparchial Bishop of New Westminster +Bryan Bayda, CSsR Eparchial Bishop of Saskatoon +Michael Wiwchar, CSsR Eparch Emeritus of Saskatoon +Severian Yakymyshyn, OSBM Eparch Emeritus of New Westminster Immaculate Heart of Mary School for our Annual Christmas Concerts!! - The Grades K-3 students are performing Humbug' on Tuesday, December 20 at 1:30 PM, and as well, at 7:00 PM. - The Grade 4-8 students are performing Miracle on Bethlehem Street' on Wednesday, December 21 at 1:30 PM, and as well, at 7:00 PM. - We also invite you to join us for our monthly Divine Liturgy at 1:00PM, Thursday, December 22 at the Cathedral.
