2 SETTING: The musical setting for today is William Mathias. Copies of the setting are available at the entrance to the Church. PRELUDE: Prière á Notre-Dame Léon Boëllmann ( ) INTROIT HYMN: TiS 470 ʻRejoice in Godʼs saintsʼ SENTENCE: ʻWhen the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, so that we might receive adoption as Godʼs children.ʼ Galatians The service continues on Page 119 & 120 with the Greeting, Prayer of Preparation, Confession, Absolution & Gloria. COLLECT: Loving God, who chose the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the mother of your incarnate Son: grant that we, who are redeemed by his blood, may share with her in the glory of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING: Isaiah I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. For Zionʼs sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalemʼs sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. PSALM: Song of Mary (APBA p.31) (Morley fauxbourdons) SECOND READING: Galatians But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ʻAbba! Father!ʼ So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

3 GRADUAL HYMN: TiS 302 ʻThe angel Gabriel from heaven cameʼ GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Choir/All: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Choir: Mary is taken up to heaven, and the angels of God shout for joy. Choir/All: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Minister: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke All: Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. SERMON: The Rev Canon Richard Tutin PRAYERS: The prayers conclude with the following Diocesan ʻGoing for Growthʼ Prayer: Living God, creator, redeemer, strengthener: enliven, guide and strengthen your Church in all you send us to do. By your Holy Spirit enable us to grow:- in faith, in service, in generous giving; and add to your Church new disciples that your saving, reconciling, recreating work may go forward, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Then the Lordʼs prayer Page 124 PREPARATION: Page 125

Fr Gary s comments on the Provincial Conference. I have returned from an inspiring, affirming conference. Inspiring- because of the possibilities that all churches have for growth. Affirming - because so many of the 230 people present were touched by meeting together and supporting one another. It wasn t a conference about turning every parish into a mega church. It was about the possibility of what every congregation can do. God has a mission, but how do we co-operate with God s mission? Growth is about people and wanting the best for people, it is not about numbers but about those individual people who come. Growth starts with prayer. Have you noticed what has happened at St Mary s since as a parish we have been praying the Diocesan Prayer for growth? People are coming, but what next? There are many good things that we are already doing at St Mary s. My intention is to run a couple of groups in the parish using the material provided at the conference, Leading your Local church into growth. I know this will encourage us to take the next steps in cooperating in God s mission. I will be asking the best times when people can meet together to be involved in listening about, reflecting on and planning for growth at St Mary s. Last week the study group affirmed that they would like St Mary s to be a safe structure, in which each of us, singularly and together can: 1. Seek the truth, 2. Be transformed by the truth and 3. Offer the truth The offering of truth would include but not be restricted to by going out and proclaiming the Gospel, the love of God, the message of salvation and the kingdom, service. We could do this in the imitation of Jesus in a disciplined and calm manner. That was a wonderful statement that I took into the conference and which was confirmed by the experience of the leaders. Many people in our community want a place where they can explore the issues of their life, where they can be heard without being judged, where they can belong and be accepted before making commitments. The next step is to ask, Is St Mary s such a place? (physically and people wise?) What might we do better to allow more of this to happen? Each week I will put a piece of information in the pewsheet. Growing our parish is to become part of our lifeblood, even our DNA, rather than just part of our brain cells. Growing our parish involves doing what we do well.

7 Growing our parish can involve starting new services, something completely different from what we already do well. Growing our parish is not about doing a whole lot more so we get exhausted! The two presenters Bob and Robin came from England. They spoke about humour and fun in church. They modelled this throughout the conference right from the beginning. They promised not to mention the cricket as they flashed up on the screens the headlines of Australia s defeat in the cricket ashes series. As a thankyou gift one of them was given an Australian cricket polo shirt and cap, the other a book of Michael Leunig s cartoons. Archdeacon Bob Jackson. Bob was one of the two presenters at the conference shown proudly? wearing his new Australian cricket gear.
