The Gathering Informal words of greeting and welcome, before we sing : Common Praise 362 Hymns Old & New 467 Opening Hymn Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord : unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word ; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name : make known his might, the deeds his arm has done ; his mercy sure, from age to age the same ; his holy name, the Lord, the Mighty One. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might : powers and dominions lay their glory by ; proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high. Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word : firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children s children and for evermore. Words : Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926) Tune : Woodlands The JUNIOR CHURCH leave for worship time in the Parish Centre. The Greeting The President welcomes the congregation and introduces the liturgy. The Grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all - And also with you. 3

The Prayers of Penitence The Deacon leads us to Confession with these words : We have done what is wrong in the Lord s sight and chosen what displeases him. Yet as a mother comforts her child, so shall the Lord himself comfort us. So let us come to the Lord, who knows our every deed and thought, and acknowledge our transgressions in penitence and faith. - Silence is kept for a short time, in Confession and Prayer. Jesus, like a mother you gather your people to you ; you are gentle with us as with your children : Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Often you weep over our sins and our pride, tenderly you draw us from hatred and judgement : Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. You comfort us in sorrow, and bind up our wounds ; in sickness you nurse us, and with pure milk you feed us : Lord, have mercy Lord, have mercy. The President pronounces the Absolution. May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen. 4

The Collect The President introduces silent prayer, uniting our prayer with The Collect. God of compassion, whose Son Jesus Christ, the child of Mary, shared the life of a home in Nazareth, and on the cross drew the whole human family to himself : strengthen us in our daily living that in joy and in sorrow we may know the power of your presence to bind together and to heal ; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Liturgy of the Word Please sit. The First Reading Read by Anna Harrison 1 Samuel 1: In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, I have asked him of the Lord. The man Elkanah and all his household went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and to pay his vow. But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, that he may appear in the presence of the Lord, and remain there for ever; I will offer him as a nazirite for all time.' Her husband Elkanah said to her, Do what seems best to you, wait until you have weaned him; only may the Lord establish his word.' So the woman remained and nursed her son, until she weaned him. When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh; and the child was young. Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. And she said, Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. For this child I prayed; and the Lord has granted me the petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord. She left him there for the Lord. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

Please remain seated as the Choir sings - Psalm 34: A prayerful reflection for the week just past, or now begun. Come, my children, and listen to me ; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is there who delights in life and longs for days to enjoy good things? Keep you tongue from evil and your lips from lying words. Turn from evil and do good ; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and his ears are open to their cry. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to root out the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry and the Lord hears them and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the broken hearted and will save those who are crushed in spirit. Many are the troubles of the righteous ; from them all will the Lord deliver them. He keeps all their bones, so that not one of them is broken. Second Reading Read by Pat Jones Colossians 3 : As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. This is the word of the Lord. 6 Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation Please stand. During the 'eluia' the 'Book of the Gospels' is carried into the congregation, all turn to face it. Choir The Lord is a great God, O that today you would listen to his voice. Harden not your hearts. Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory! The Gospel Reading The Deacon introduces and reads the Gospel. John 19: Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, Woman, here is your son. Then he said to the disciple, Here is your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The Sermon The Revd Arnold Clay 7

Please STAND with the President : The Apostles' Creed Let us affirm our faith in God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried ; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again ; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The President makes the invitation : 8 As children of a loving God who always listens to our cries, let us pray to our heavenly Father. Please sit or kneel. This response may be used : God of love, ALL hear our prayer. Prayers of Intercession The prayers are led by Noreen Abell. After the final bidding the President says : God of love, passionate and strong, tender and careful : watch over us and hold us all the days of our life ; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Sacrament The Banns of Marriage The President publishes the Banns of Marriage for those preparing for their Wedding in or from this parish, within the coming months. Please stand. The President says : The Peace Through the voice of the prophet Isaiah, God says, As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you. The peace of the Lord be always with you. and also with you. The Deacon says : Let us offer one another a sign of peace. may exchange a sign and greeting of Divine Peace. Common Praise 238 Hymns Old & New 136 Offertory Hymn - Bread & Wine are brought forward, and the COLLECTION gathered. If a tax-payer it is very helpful if you use the GIFT AID envelopes. For Mary, mother of our Lord, God s holy name be praised, who first the Son of God adored, as on her child she gazed. Brave, holy Virgin, she believed, though hard the task assigned, and by the Holy Ghost conceived the Saviour of mankind. Continued > > 9

10 The busy world had got no space or time for God on earth ; a cattle manger was the place where Mary gave him birth. She gave her body as God s shrine, her heart to piercing pain. she knew the cost of love divine, when Jesus Christ was slain. Dear Mary, from your lowliness and home in Galilee there comes a joy and holiness to every family. Hail, Mary, you are full of grace, above all women blest ; and blest your Son, whom your embrace in birth and death confessed. Words : J R Peacey ( ) Tune : Come host of heaven's high dwelling place There may be an organ improvisation before the Gifts are received. The Gifts of Bread & Wine and Collection are received. The President says : Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty ; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. things come from you, and of your own do we give you. There may be an organ improvisation as we prepare to make our prayer. Please remain standing as we pray. The Lord is here. His Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. The Eucharistic Prayer

How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When we turned away you did not reject us, but came to meet us in your Son. You embraced us as your children and welcomed us to sit and eat with you. Lord we praise you : To you be glory and praise for ever. In Christ you shared our life that we might live in him and he in us. He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin. Lord we praise you : To you be glory and praise for ever. On the night he was betrayed, at supper with his friends he took bread, and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this is remembrance of me. Father, we do this in remembrance of him : his body is the bread of life. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins; do this in remembrance of me. Father, we do this in remembrance of him : his blood is shed for all. As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory, send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy gifts make us one in Christ, our risen Lord. 11

With your whole Church throughout the world we offer you this sacrifice of praise and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven : Please sit or kneel - Silence is kept, the bell is rung three times. 12

The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour Jesus Christ has taught, so we pray : Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name ; thy kingdom come ; thy will be done ; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation ; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread The President breaks the consecrated bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. We all sing the 'Agnus Dei' as the bread is broken for all to share : 13

The Giving of Communion The President says : Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. The President and People receive and share in Holy Communion. - The Communion Administrants receive first in order then to serve us ; followed by the Choir and all the people, beginning from the Balcony and Back of the church first. You are invited to affirm each time Amen and then receive. - Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive communion. - Others who are not communicants are warmly invited to come to the altar for a blessing. Simply come and kneel at the rail and keep your head bowed. DURING this part of our worship please keep prayerful stillness and quiet as you wait to receive, and allow others to receive in the gentleness of quiet and prayer. There is opportunity to receive prayer with anointing in the South Transept ; please make your way there on your return from Communion if you would like to receive. ALL are welcome and invited. 14

HYMNS DURING COMMUNION Please remain seated or kneeling to sing. Common Praise 305 Hymns Old & New 227 I come with joy, a child of God, forgiven, loved and free, the life of Jesus to recall, in love laid down for me. I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, the new community of love in Christ s communion bread. As Christ breaks bread, and bids us share, each proud division ends. The Love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends. The Spirit of the risen Christ, unseen, but ever near, is in such friendship better known, alive among us here. Together met, together bound by all that God has done, we ll go with joy, to give the world the love that makes us one. Words : Brian Wren (b.1936) Tune : St Botolph Common Praise 112 Hymns Old & New 346 My song is love unknown, my Saviour s love to me, love to the loveless shown, that they might lovely be. O, who am I, that for my sake my Lord should take frail flesh and die? He came from his blest throne, salvation to bestow : but men made strange, and none the longed-for Christ would know. But, O my friend, my friend indeed, who at my need his life did spend! Continued > > 15

Sometimes they strew his way, and his sweet praises sing ; resounding all the day Hosannas to their King. Then Crucify! is all their breath, and for his death they thirst and cry. Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, he gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet they at these themselves displease, and gainst him rise. They rise, and needs will have my dear Lord made away ; a murderer they save, the Prince of Life they slay. Yet cheerful he to suffering goes, that he his foes from thence might free. In life no house, no home, my Lord on earth might have ; in death no friendly tomb, but what a stranger gave. What may I say? Heaven was his home ; but mine the tomb wherein he lay. Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine ; never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine! This is my Friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend. Words: S. Crossman ( ) Tune: Love Unknown DURING this part of our worship please keep prayerful stillness and quiet as you wait to receive, and allow others to receive in the gentleness of quiet and prayer. 16

The Choir sings : Anthem Ave Maria, gratia plena; Dominus tecum, Dominus tecum. benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. Ave Maria, gratia plena; Dominus tecum, Dominus tecum. benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis Sancta Maria, ora pro nobis, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae, ora pro nobis peccatoribus Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Thou art blessed among women, and blessed is Jesus, the fruit of thy womb. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Words : Traditional anthem derived from Luke s Gospel Music : Simon Lindley Silence may be kept. The President leads us in the _ Prayer after Communion Loving God, as a mother feeds her children at the breast you feed us in this sacrament with the food and drink of eternal life : help us who have tasted your goodness to grow in grace within the household of faith ; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The President blesses the flowers. Blessing of Flowers Blessed are you, Lord our God, to you be praise and glory for ever! The gifts you give in creation speak of your power and your love : bless these flowers + that they may be for us today a sign of joy and a promise of abundance. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 17

The Dismissal Common Praise 393 Hymns Old & New 73 Hymn - During which : the FLOWERS are distributed. and the Cross, Acolytes, Reader & Clergy return to the Chancel step. Brother, sister, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you ; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my ser-vant too. We are pilgrims on a journey and companions on the road ; we are here to help each other walk the mile and be-ar the load. I will hold the Christ-light for you in the night-time of your fear ; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you lo-ng to hear. I will weep when you are weeping ; when you laugh I ll laugh with you ; I will share your joy and sorrow till we ve seen this jour-ney through. When we sing to God in heaven we shall find such harmony, born of all we ve known together of Christ s love and a-gony. Brother, sister, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you ; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my ser-vant too. Words : Richard Gillard (bn 1953) Tune : Servant Song 18

The President pronounces the Blessing. The Blessing May God, who gave birth to all creation, bless you. May God, who became incarnate by an earthly mother, bless you. May God, who broods as a mother over her children, bless you. The blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
