8 MUSICAL NOTES The vocal duet heard as the Prelude comes from the fourth of a series of twelve multi-movement English anthems for voices and instrumental-ensemble that Handel composed in the late 1710s. During this period Handel was a residential guest of the country home of the Duke of Chandos. These so-called Chandos Anthems, some of Handel s earliest essays in English-language composition, are thought to have been important stepping-stones to his cultivation of the oratorio, which also began in this period, but flowered only two decades later. Hans Leo Hassler ( ) was a German composer of the late Renaissance, trained in Venice and active particularly in Augsburg and Nuremberg. Cantate Domino is largely chordal in construction, and cheery in affect, both of which have probably helped make it a favorite of modern choirs. Mozart composed two cycles of music for the late-afternoon service of Vespers, which he composed for the cathedral in Salzburg in 1779 and These pieces are each comprised of five elaborate choral psalms plus a setting of the Magnificat. The setting heard today, of the very brief Psalm 117 (one of the two shortest in the Psalter), provides an island of repose in the midst of otherwise very active music in this later Vespers; it is a lyrical soprano solo with the choir joining in partway through. A hymn in the Syriac liturgy of the fourth century provides the textual basis for Strengthen for service, sung at Communion. It achieved its current form after being filtered through a fifth-century South Indian adaptation and nineteenth and early-twentieth century translations and versifications. It entered the use of the Episcopal Church through The Hymnal 1940, and remains with us as Hymn 312.

Chuck Weiss at revcsw@aol.com Calvary Young Adult Ministry Over the past year this group has had a couple of names: Calvary Conversations and most recently the 20s / 30s Group. This new moniker, Calvary Young Adult Ministry, serves a couple of purposes. First, it allows people to self-identify; there will be no excluding someone because they are 19 or 40, second, Young Adult Ministry is considerably easier to say than the 20s and 30s Group, and third, Young Adult Ministry is the term used by The Episcopal Church across the country and beyond. Our schedule this fall will be predominately time spent in fellowship; my hope is to build a solid community of friends and fellow disciples. The rhythm for the fall season will be one of meeting every other week. One week we will gather for a Holy Happy Hour and the next time we will have brunch after the 11 o clock service on Sunday. Our next gathering is on October 29. A full schedule appears on the Calvary website. T.J.+ Join us at Trinity Cathedral for Light Up Night The Parish Council is looking for 20 volunteers from Calvary to team up with Trinity Cathedral on Light Up Night, Friday, November 21, beginning at 5 p.m (for set-up). The historic Cathedral will be open from 6 9 p.m. on Light-Up Night and will feature entertainment and refreshments. Calvary volunteers will don our And Also With Yinz attire, which the Calvary Bookstore will have for sale at the event. The Cathedral is in a perfect location to access all the downtown events. Even if you are not able to volunteer, everyone is invited to stop in and say Hello! or stay for the whole evening to kick off another great holiday season! If you would like to help, please contact Stephen Shandor at steve.shandor@gmail.com or There is also a sign up sheet on the bulletin board. Recycle a Coat and Warm a Heart East End Cooperative Ministry is collecting warm coats, hats, gloves, and scarves to distribute to children and adults in our neighborhood. There is a special box in the Parish Hall for your donations. The collection runs thru November 16. Thank you! Save the Date for Poetry Out Loud! Poetry Out Loud will host an evening at Calvary with Katherine Ayres reading her poetry. You know her award-winning children s books, you have dipped into her

The reach of UTO extends from our own neighborhood to our domestic heartland and to communities abroad, nearby and on distant continents. The Pilgrim s Way A Class for Inquirers Offered by the Rev. John J. Fetterman Pilgrimage is a special kind of journey which emphasizes the learning that happens while one is on the way to the sacred place. I position this program as just that kind of learning environment. It will be particularly suitable for newcomers or anyone who wants to exercise their privileges as a pilgrim. My strong interest now is to talk with people about the sacred journey through many unexpected pathways into the holy and abiding presence of God which can be found in the Episcopal Church. To this end, I am offering three classes for Inquirers, of any vintage, at Calvary Church on alternating Saturday mornings (10:30 12:00) on these dates: October 25, November 8, and November 22. If you can attend any of these sessions, please call the church office ( ) to indicate your intentions. I am looking forward to walking with you on pilgrimage. The Rev. John J. Fetterman, Theologian in Residence The Next Step Group The Next Step Group offers spiritual seekers a place where there are no problems too big or wrong answers. The group is a safe place to share what you like about the Christian experience and learn from the experience of others who are very similar or different in belief or outlook. New Meeting: The first and third Tuesday (November 4 & 18 and December 2 & 16) from 7:30-8:30 p.m. and every second and fourth Saturday (November 8 & 22 and December 13 & 27) from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Meetings will be held in the Conference Room at Calvary. Please feel free to attend any meeting you wish and at your convenience. The meetings may have a different format (as the group decides) and subject matter will vary. Tuesday night meetings will not duplicate Saturday meetings and vice versa. For more information, please contact John Horchner, johnhorchner@gmail.com or Sondra Krimmel, krimmss@yahoo.com. 15 Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost October 19, 2014 Proper 24A THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A Reading from the Book of Isaiah [45:1-7] Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him and the gates shall not be closed: I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me, so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the Lord do all these things. Reader: The Word of the Lord. Congregation: Thanks be to God. Psalm 96:1-9 1 Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing to the Lord, all the whole earth. 2 Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all peoples. 4 For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods. 5 As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the Lord who made the heavens. 6 Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary! 7 Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the Lord honor and power. 8 Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; * bring offerings and come into his courts. 9 Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before him. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

16 A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians [1:1-10] Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you, because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming. Reader: The Word of the Lord. Congregation: Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to Matthew [22:15-22] Response before the Gospel: Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Pharisees went and plotted to entrap Jesus in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not? But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax. And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, Whose head is this, and whose title? They answered, The emperor s. Then he said to them, Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor s, and to God the things that are God s. When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. Response after the Gospel: Praise to you, Lord Christ. RCL-A-Proper
