Response after the Gospel Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Homily The Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen The Nicene Creed Congregation standing We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People Intercessor Living God, in your mercy, People hear our prayer. Confession and Absolution CELEBRANT AND PEOPLE: God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. The Peace CELEBRANT: The peace of the Lord be always with you. PEOPLE: And also with you. All may greet one another. The Offertory Hymn All stand and sing printed inside

3 The Holy Communion CELEBRANT: The Lord be with you. PEOPLE: And also with you. CELEBRANT: Lift up your hearts. PEOPLE: We lift them to the Lord. CELEBRANT: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. PEOPLE: It is right to give God thanks and praise. CELEBRANT: We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we say: CELEBRANT AND PEOPLE: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Celebrant continues Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with [ and] all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer All say together

11 LITURGICAL NOTES ORDINARY TIME Ordinary Time is not a church season as such. The term is a way to describe the weeks in-between the seasons. The word ordinary here means ordinal, counted. The weeks of this counted time are each given a number to help the church organize its liturgical books. Although Ordinary Time doesn t have sacred significance the way the seasons of Advent, Christmastime, Lent, and Eastertime do, these in-between weeks take on some of the imagery of the seasons of nature, of the civil calendar, and certainly of the scriptures, prayers, and songs of the liturgy. Ordinary time can be understood in terms of the living out of Christian faith and the meaning of Christ's resurrection in ordinary life. The term Ordinary Time is not used in the Prayer Book, but the season after Pentecost can be considered ordinary time. It may be referred to as the green season, because green is the usual liturgical color for this period of the church year. The BCP provides numbered propers with collects and lectionary readings for the Sundays of the Season after Pentecost.

Their tasks vary from lighting altar candles and carrying torches and crosses to serving the priests at communion and carrying and processing with the Gospel Book. You might notice that the high school students are typically the ones carrying the crosses and the Gospel Book. Our high school juniors and seniors have been serving at the Calvary Episcopal Church altar since they were in fourth and fifth grade. If you are entering grades three through twelve and are interested in serving as an acolyte, please let us know. Laurie Heinricher is the official organizer of the acolytes and she would be thrilled to know that there are more young people interested in taking on this vitally important role. We will have our annual acolyte training on Saturday, September 13. The exact time is yet to be determined. Keep your eye on the weekly bulletin and the next Agape for more details. 16 Women of Calvary 2013 Grant Recipients The WoC Holiday Bazaar is long over and packed away, awaiting this year s rush of excitement. The many days and weeks of preparation resulted in another successful venture for Calvary Church. The myriad of volunteers contributed another job well done, and are already in the planing stages for this year s event! In a few months the WoC Grant Committee will begin to deliberate on the many worthy organizations who will be recipients of the proceeds. But, for those organizations who received grants in 2013 resulting from the Bazaar of 2012, the service to the community goes on. The 2012 Bazaar provided the WoC with $17,000 to award as grants to nine organizations. These organizations were listed recently in an Agape newsletter. Each organization that received a grant was asked to explain how the award monies would be used. In the following weeks, the Sunday bulletin will highlight a different recipient, to give members of Calvary a sense of how our support of the WoC Bazaar really supports our community as a whole. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Melissa Protzek, Esq., Executive Director First in a series. In Allegheny County, there are thousands of children who are active with the Children s Court system because they have been abused or neglected. Unfortunately, child victims of abuse and neglect often suffer from a myriad of complex problems and circumstances that, without personalized attention, will sabotage their ability to find safe, nurturing and permanent homes. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers, through collaboration with Children s Court judges, are assigned to the cases that are most complex and where the abuse and neglect is most severe. The CASA volunteers, with their staff case manager, meet with all those involved with the children (including parents, caregivers, relatives, neighbors, teachers, therapists, doctors, daycare providers, etc.) to gather information. They visit the children once a month, wherever the child is living, to ensure their safety. These interactions, conversations, meetings and observations form the basis for CASA reports and recommendations that are presented to the court both through a written report and in court testimony. The generous grant of $1,500 to CASA of Allegheny County will help support the court costs associated with staff case managers who supervise the volunteers and ensure quality advocacy for all children. On behalf of everyone at CASA, thank you again for your empathy and compassion. Together we can achieve great things for children, one child at a time.

18 Second Sunday after Pentecost June 22, 2014 Proper 7A THE COLLECT OF THE DAY O Lord, make us have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for you never fail to help and govern those whom you have set upon the sure foundation of your loving-kindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A Reading from the Book of Jeremiah [20:7-13] O Lord, you have enticed me, and I was enticed; you have overpowered me, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me. For whenever I speak, I must cry out, I must shout, Violence and destruction! For the word of the Lord has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. If I say, I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name, then within me there is something like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. For I hear many whispering: Terror is all around! Denounce him! Let us denounce him! All my close friends are watching for me to stumble. Perhaps he can be enticed, and we can prevail against him, and take our revenge on him. But the Lord is with me like a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they will not prevail. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten. O Lord of hosts, you test the righteous, you see the heart and the mind; let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hands of evildoers. Reader: The Word of the Lord. Congregation: Thanks be to God. Psalm 69:8-11, Surely, for your sake have I suffered reproach, * and shame has covered my face. 9 I have become a stranger to my own kindred, * an alien to my mother s children. 10 Zeal for your house has eaten me up; * the scorn of those who scorn you has fallen upon me. 11 I humbled myself with fasting, * but that was turned to my reproach. 18 Answer me, O Lord, for your love is kind; * in your great compassion, turn to me. 19 Hide not your face from your servant; * be swift and answer me, for I am in distress. 20 Draw near to me and redeem me; * because of my enemies deliver me. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

19 A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans [6:1b-11] Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Reader: The Word of the Lord. Congregation: Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to Matthew [10:24-39] Response before the Gospel: Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said to the twelve apostles, A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven. Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one s foes will be members of one s own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. Response after the Gospel: Praise to you, Lord Christ. RCL-A-Proper
