Triumph o er the shades of night: Day-spring from on high, be near; Day-star, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee; joyless is the day s return till thy mercy s beams I see, till they inward light impart, glad my eyes and warm my heart. Visit then this soul of mine! Pierce the gloom of sin and grief! Fill me, radiancy divine; scatter all my unbelief; more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day. Amen. 7 Music at Communion Prayer of the Venerable Bede Richard Proulx Christus est Stella Matutina, Christ is the Morning Star qui nocte saecum transacta lucem vitae, who, when the night of this world is past, luce Sanctis promitit, gives to his saints the promise of et pandit aeternum. the light of life, and opens everlasting day. Attributed to the Venerable Bede (8th cent.) Come Down, O Love Divine Hilary Tadman-Robins Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, And visit it with thine own ardor glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, And kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, And lowliness become mine inner clothing; True lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, And o er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn To dust and ashes in its heat consuming; And let thy glorious light shine ever in my sight, And clothe me round, the while my path illuming. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long Shall far outpass the power of human telling; For none can guess its grace till he becomes the place Wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Communion Hymn What wondrous love is this HYMNAL, 439 Sending of the Lay Eucharistic Ministers Celebrant: With the prayers of this congregation, we send you forth bearing this sacrament of Christ s presence, that those to whom you go may share with us in the communion of Christ s body and blood. We who are many are one body, The people respond: because we all share one bread, one cup. Post-Communion Prayer BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, page 365 Said by all together, kneeling. The Blessing Procession into the World How bright appears the Morning Star HYMNAL, 497 Dismissal All respond: Thanks be to God. Postlude Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern Dietrich Buxtehude All who wish to listen to the postlude from the Choir Stalls are invited to do so. Coffee and fellowship follows in the Parish Hall.

8 MUSICAL NOTES Alan Lewis is in Chicago, attending a midwinter gathering of the Association of Anglican Musicians, of which he is the president. He will be back in the office on Wednesday. St. Bede, usually known as the Venerable Bede, was an eighth-century Anglo-Saxon monk. His History of the English Church remains a landmark among early historical works, and he was widely esteemed as a scholar and man of God in his own day. The words of today s communion-anthem are attributed to him, and are engraved on the wall of the so-called Galilee Chapel of Durham Cathedral, where Bede s tomb is housed. The image of Christ as the morning star comes from the closing chapter of the Book of Revelation: It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star (Rev. 22:16). Richard Proulx (rhymes with true ), who composed the setting of Bede s words heard at Communion, was a prominent American church-musician and composer, long associated with the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Name in Chicago. (He also composed the setting of the Sanctus, S 125, that we are singing during this season.) His setting has the choir, largely in unison, repeat the opening line of the prayer several times, in Latin; over this, a solo alto voice sings the balance of the text, primarily in English.

Volunteers are needed. If you want to add your name to the list of available volunteers please contact either Matt Muldoon at or mattmuldoon@msn.com. or Gary Abbs at or gary_abbs@comcast.net. Calvary Young Adult Ministry Schedule The spring schedule for the Calvary Young Adult Ministry has been posted on the Calvary website ( You will notice a little change from our fall schedule. The Reverend Leslie Reimer will be the preacher at all services EECM Holiday Berry Program Follow-Up This Christmas, Calvary parishioners provided gifts to 75 participants of East End Cooperative Ministry programs, including Faith Housing, Penn Free Housing, Bridge Housing, and Children and Youth programs, by donating three requested items per person: something wanted, something needed, and a book or calendar. These gifts relieve the financial burden on many East End families at Christmas, provide essential household goods and clothing, and brighten the holidays. In addition, Calvary parishioners contributed 69 $25 Giant Eagle gift cards for distribution to EECM food pantry participants. These gift cards are particularly appreciated this time of year as children are off from school for two weeks and parents can use the gift cards to stretch their December food supplies. Thanks to all of you who chose berries and brought in your wrapped gifts on time for Christmas delivery to the recipients! This program went remarkably well this year, given the tight timeline. Thanks also to the volunteers who helped to sort and bag the gifts, and deliver the car loads of gifts to the EECM Community Center for distribution to the participating families. Sheldon Calvary Camp in Pittsburgh Beginning on January 25, Calvary Episcopal Church will host a monthly Sheldon Calvary Camp service on Sunday afternoons. We will gather for an informal celebration of the Holy Eucharist with music from the camp songbook. The Rev. Leslie Reimer, Calvary Camp s Director of Spiritual Life, will be the primary celebrant and preacher with assistance from the other Calvary Church clergy (watch for Calvary Church s rector among the guitar players). Campers and their families, staff, alumni, and friends of Calvary Camp are welcome. Children are invited to participate fully. Light refreshments and time to visit with each other will follow each service. The Calvary Camp service will begin at 3 p.m. on the fourth Sunday of each month here at Calvary Church. We will meet in the Refectory, easily accessible to everyone by elevator or stairs. Parking is available in the church parking lot or on the street, and the entrance is through the Parish House door just off the parking lot. Please join us, invite your friends, and spread the good news. Jonathon, Leslie, and T.J. Palms from Palm Sunday will be burned in the courtyard at 6:15 that evening. Adele Eley, Coordinator for Christian Formation, aeley@calvarypgh.org, ext a.m., in the Refectory. TODAY: Many, Many Manifestations The celebration of the Epiphany is but one of the many manifestations of God to the creation. The story of the Magi presenting gifts hold in it much tenderness and sweetness, but the real significance is much greater than this story. Since the very beginning, in the creation, God has wanted to be known by the people he has called into existence. Our theologian in residence, John Fetterman, will be the presenter. Sunday, January 25 St. Michael s Society: The Heart of Calvary s Future Please join our Rector, Jonathon Jensen, Hilary Brown, from the Pittsburgh Foundation, and Deborah Kelly, Head of Calvary s Planned Giving Program, to learn about the exciting progress we ve made and opportunities for your legacy and Calvary s future. Book Club Invites All The book club of the Church of the Redeemer in Squirrel Hill invites members of Calvary Church to join in the reading and discussion of Dwight Zscheille s, People of the Way, renewing Episcopal identity. Once upon a time, the Episcopal Church was grounded in its identity as benefactor or national church. Those days are gone. But if the Episcopal Church is no longer the church of the establishment, what is the heart of Episcopal identity and mission? Scholar and Episcopal priest Dwight Scheille draws on multiple streams of Anglican thought and practice to craft a vision for mission that addresses the church s post-establishment post-colonial situation. The reading club meets Tuesday evenings at 7 at Redeemer. This Tuesday, January 20 the discussion will cover up through the first chapter. Visit Calvary s website at

16 The Second Sunday after the Epiphany January 18, 2015 THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ s glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A Reading from the First Book of Samuel [3:1-10 (11-20)] Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, Samuel! Samuel! and he said, Here I am! and ran to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, Samuel! Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. [Then the Lord said to Samuel, See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever. Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. But Eli called Samuel and said, Samuel, my son. He said, Here I am. Eli said, What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you. So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, It is the Lord; let him do what seems good to him. As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord.] Reader: The Word of the Lord. Congregation: Thanks be to God. Psalm 139:1-5, Lord, you have searched me out and known me; * you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 2 You trace my journeys and my resting-places * and are acquainted with all my ways. 3 Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, * but you, O Lord, know it altogether. 4 You press upon me behind and before * and lay your hand upon me. continued on reverse side

17 5 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; * it is so high that I cannot attain to it. 12 For you yourself created my inmost parts; * you knit me together in my mother's womb. 13 I will thank you because I am marvelously made; * your works are wonderful, and I know it well. 14 My body was not hidden from you, * while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. 15 Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; * they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them. 16 How deep I find your thoughts, O God! * how great is the sum of them! 17 If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; * to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians [6:12-20] All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything. Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, The two shall be one flesh. But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. Reader: The Word of the Lord. Congregation: Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to John [1:43-51] Response before the Gospel: Glory to you, Lord Christ. The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit! Nathanael asked him, Where did you get to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you. Nathanael replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. And he said to him, Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. Response after the Gospel: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
