1 Good Shepherd Episcopal Church 2140 Main Street, Wailuku, HI (808) February 2017 Lent is a traditional time of prayer and fasting, a time to prepare ourselves spiritually for the immense mysteries of Holy Week and especially the Triduum, the celebration of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. There will be some new things this Lent, as well as things we traditionally practice. Ash Wednesday March 1st, 2017 Imposition of Ashes Liturgy: 7:00 am and 7:00 pm... remember you are dust and to dust you shall return... Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. The palms from the previous years Palm Sunday service have been burned at the previous evening's Shrove Tuesday events. We use the ashes to make the sign of the cross on the forehead, an ancient sign of penance and a recognition of our mortality... that we may remember that it is only by Your gracious gift that we are given everlasting life... Ashes To Go March 1st, :00 am 1:00 pm Ashes to Go is a creative way of reaching out to our community on Ash Wednesday. We will have a banner which we will put on the front lawn on the corner by the McDonalds drive through. We will invite people to drive through to receive the imposition of ashes. We will have a handout on the meaning of receiving the sign of ashes, and an invitation to celebrate with us for our Lenten studies and services, culminating in our Easter services. We will also ask people if they would like prayer. The evangelism committee is sponsoring Ashes to Go. We would welcome some people to join us for a while to hand out the brochure and invite people to receive ashes as well as whether they would like Fr. Craig to pray for them. We hope to have some media coverage to let folks in Wailuku that it will be happening, as well as have a banner on the lawn letting people know it is happening. Pilgrim Pilgrim 1: Wednesdays in Lent, starting March 8th,5:30pm 7:00 pm Would you like to explore what it means to be a Christian? Would you like to consider following Jesus in baptism personally, or have your children baptized? Would you like to prepare for the sacrament of confirmation in having the Bishop lay hands on you and pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit? Or perhaps this Lent you would like to go back to the beginning, to practice beginners mind? Please join us for Pilgrim 1, the first in a series of 8 classes to grow deeper in the Christian faith. We will share a simple meal together and explore together being pilgrims on what the early Christians called The Way. (please call the office: to register) Pilgrim 2: Fridays in Lent, starting March 3rd. 5:30 pm and after the Stations of the Cross The Lord's Prayer is a profoundly simple prayer, packed with the essence of what Jesus was trying to teach about God, spirituality and how to live as a spiritual person in a complex world. Pilgrim 2 invites us to consider that prayer together on the Way of Jesus. Like Pilgrim 1, we will share a simple meal together. The Stations of the Cross: Fridays in Lent at 5:00 pm This is an ancient and beloved form of spirituality and devotion. We have 14 stations of the cross around the church, each focussing on Jesus' last day that ended in his death. We sing, pray and process around the church as we prepare our hearts in Lent to celebrate the Mysteries at Easter. Two special Saturdays in Lent: March 11th We come to Jesus the Rev'd Canon Alexander Graham 9:00 am- 12:00 pm Canon Sandy Graham is our new Canon for Congregational Development. We have asked him to share with us on the theme of the church. He will both challenge, encourage and enable us to be the Body of Christ in a new and deeper way. April 8th Mission Shaped Church with Fr. Craig 9:00 am 12:00 pm Churches throughout the Anglican communion we are grappling with a society which is ever more secular. We have embraced the Five Marks of Mission and are increasingly using the word missional. Fr. Craig will be leading us in scripture and asking us what our parish could look like if we embraced, grasped, what it means to be focussed on those who do not yet know Jesus or are part of.

4 Page 4 ALTAR GUILD TRAINING FEBRUARY 25, SATURDAY 1:30pm POTLUCK Shepherd Staff In the life of a parish in the Episcopal Church, how we think of, view, use and care for the Altar (or Holy Table) is of extreme importance. You will know this when you enter our church and almost immediately see the Altar, prominently place in the sanctuary. It's prominence, vesting and decoration, almost forces you to see it, to gaze upon it...and to pray. The Altar is really the "seat" of God, through His Son, Jesus and upon which we celebrate the Eucharist. In the life of a parish in the Episcopal Church, the Altar Guild is the representative and active group, of the parish, that makes sure the Altar cared for, so that it remains prominent in our minds, hearts and souls...and in our actions as a Community of Faith, as the People of God here at GSEC. I will be delivering a training for the Altar Guild, including anyone who would like to become a member...to care for the Altar. Please let me know you want to attend...to come and see our Altar "up close" and intimately so. I'll be waiting for your call. I can assure you that you will enjoy your time being "up close" to our Altar. Aloha Ke Akua John A. February 26 th 9:00 am service - Sesquicentennial Finalé To wrap up our Sesquicentennial we are going to hold a grand service and luau on February 26 th. We want to invite old friends and parishioners to come together to worship God and celebrate together. We want your help in inviting folks. If you can give us a name and address we can mail out an invitation. It is an opportunity to invite friends and family to join us. We will be going through our baptism, confirmation records and see if we can find people who would like to join us. What would be a better way to celebrate our Sesquicentennial than to double our church in one Sunday. All it takes is inviting one person... A highlight will be opening the time capsule in the cornerstone of the church. What will be in it? Historical treasures? Former rectors? Nothing at all and the rumors are not in fact true? The only way to find out will be to be there to join us. We will also be putting a few select items in the time capsule for those in the future to open it and peer back into the dim and dusty 21 st century INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Those Who Serve Celebration of New Ministry Throwing in the Towel Birthdays and Anniversaries Volunteer Opportunities Altar Guild Training ACCW Annual Meeting The Bishop will be preaching and presiding. After the service we will have a luau with entertainment and that legendary Good Shepherd hospitality! February Calendar 5 Please join us, and contact the office to give us names to invite people.
