1 SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2018 HEY, IT S SUMMER! TRY TO SLOW DOWN AND TAKE TIME TO ENJOY Summer officially arrived this last week on Thursday, June 21 st. Wonderful! School is out. It s vacation season for some families. Let s all try to slow down, even a little, and really enjoy the sunshine, look at the sunset (maybe even the sunrise), hear the ocean waves and the wind and smell the colorful flowers. Let s all Take Time Take time to think; it is the source of power. Take time to read; it is the foundation of wisdom. Take time to play; it is the secret of staying young. Take time to be quiet; it is the opportunity to seek God. Take time to love, and be loved; it is God s greatest gift. Take time to laugh; it is the music of the soul. Take time to be friendly; it is the road to happiness. Take time to dream; it is what the future is made of. Take time to pray; it is the greatest power on earth. Christmas card gifts will go to Birthright for newborns and the Backpack gifts will be given to Morris County Foster Parent Association for Foster Children. 7 FIFTY YEARS AND STILL GOING THANKS BE TO GOD! I was ordained a Priest 50 years ago on Saturday, May 25, 1968 by Bishop Lawrence B. Casey for the Diocese of Paterson. It was a beautiful, sunny day very much like the past May 25 th, when I celebrated my 50 th Anniversary with so many of you at a beautiful Mass here in our parish church followed by a lovely reception at the Knoll. Fifty years ago, the next day, I offered my first Mass of Thanksgiving in my home parish, Saint Margaret s in Morristown on Sunday, May 26, My Mom and Dad, who have both gone home to Our Lord, all our family, many parishioners and friends celebrated that Mass with me. It was the beginning of my journey as a Priest. It is still a beautiful memory. My great joy is that after 50 long years, I am still serving here as your Pastor. Sometimes it s been a bumpy ride with some big health issues and juggling more than one priestly job at a time for many of those years. But all of it has been a great and joyful blessing. I wouldn t trade this life as a parish Priest for anything. For you, my dear parishioners, for 24 years now almost half of my 50 years - I hope that my priestly ministry here has been, at least in some small ways, a blessing for very many of you. I hope and pray for that with all my heart. Before coming to Parsippany, I served as a Parochial Vicar at Saint Virgil s Church in Morris Plains for my first year as a Priest. I have served three parishes as a Parish Administrator at Saint Hyacinth s Polish Parish in Paterson, at Saint Vincent s Parish in Madison and, just recently at our neighboring Saint Ann s Parish in Parsippany. Before coming here, I was the Pastor of Saint Paul s Parish in Prospect Park for 8 years. Both Saint Peter and Saint Paul play a big role in my life as the patron saints of my Parishes. I served our young people as a high school teacher for 5 years at Paterson Catholic High School during the Vietnam War. For 31 years after that, I served in the Chancery of the Diocese as the Chancellor and then the Vicar General of the Diocese. I worked there directly with 3 Bishops Bishop Casey, Bishop Rodimer and Bishop Serratelli. Those ministries were very good and challenging parts of my priesthood. Besides our 3 Bishops, I worked with so many wonderful Priests and staff members at the Diocese. In 2005, I left this Diocesan work to finally be your full time Pastor. Being your Parish Priest and Pastor these last 24 years has been the best gift that our Lord Jesus and our Mother, Mary, have given me. I turned 75 last year on December 8 and Bishop Serratelli is graciously allowing me to continue as your Pastor. Please pray for my spiritual and physical health and energy so that I might be your Pastor for a good while more. And this, we know, is completely in God s hands.
8 For all my years here, our Parish has been very blessed with excellent Priests, especially several newly ordained Priests, our Deacons, Sister Sylvia and our lay staff members. All of us must be so grateful to them. My pastorate would have never borne fruit without these dedicated, wonderful people. Our Parish has families from all over the world here and we work together constantly at becoming the more and more harmonious, diverse parish family that Jesus is calling us to be. Let s keep doing this together. Please be grateful with me to the wonderful parishioners and parish staff who worked so diligently and happily to prepare my anniversary celebration for everyone. I thank all of you for your prayers, your kindness and support to our Parish and for your generous kindness, prayers and encouragement to me. You inspire me to continue my parish ministry. Thank you all! Saint Peter and Saint Paul the Apostles, Pray for Us. Msgr. Herb
