Importantly, it also considers the effect on society if these services were to be diminished or eliminated. The video illustrates why Catholic social services are vital and explains why the buildings in which they operate are not really ours to sell, because generations of Catholics have entrusted the material wealth of the Church to us to build these properties of hope and health so we can serve the real wealth of the Church people in need. 2

Easter Message from Fr David & Fr Paul Dear Friends of Manly Freshwater Parish. Christ is Risen! Alleluia, Alleluia! Easter, the greatest of all the Church s Festivals, wonderfully reminds us that there can be no greater expression of the love and mercy of God for all humanity than in the Death and Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. While the Easter mystery does not deny the reality of suffering and pain, it does proclaim the reason for hope in the human condition. The Resurrection of Christ trumpets the ultimate Alleluia that love, compassion, generosity, humility and selflessness will ultimately triumph over hatred, bigotry, prejudice, despair, greed and death. The Easter miracle enables us, even in the most difficult and desperate of times, to live our lives in hopeful certainty of the fulfilment of the Resurrection at the end of our life s journey. The Risen Christ is present to us in the faithful witness of every good person who shares the good news of the empty tomb, who seeks to bring resurrection into this life of ours: to rise above life s sufferings and pain to give love and life to others, to renew and recreate our relationships with others, to proclaim the Gospel of the Resurrection. During the forty days of Lent many of you have prepared for Easter through your participation in, Lectio Divina, Tuesday Lenten Discussion Group and morning group and Friday Stations of the Cross and reconciliation. A special thank you to all those who put in the time, planning, work and talent to present our beautiful Easter Liturgies, the decoration of our churches, our Easter Vigil Supper and morning teas. On behalf of Fr Paul and our Happy Easter team who are showing all the signs of chocolate withdrawal, I wish you and your families peace, joy and new life that only the Risen Christ can bring. Happy Easter Fr David and Fr Paul Pope Happy Easter! May you bring to all the joy and hope of the Risen Christ! 3
4 2018 Easter Message from Most Rev Peter A Comensoli, Bishop of Broken Bay Hello friends, Greetings to you all, in the Risen Lord! The passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God s Son, and our Lord and Brother, is the greatest story of human history. It is the story of the journey of one man, for the sake of all women and men. Jesus made this journey so that his story might become ours. He did this that we might choose to walk with him. At his crucifixion, Jesus mortal body stopped in death. But this was not his end. He conquered death and walked out of the tomb, the First Born from the dead. The Risen Lord then entered into his resurrected life at quite a pace. He walked up to Mary Magdalene and called her by name. He walked into the upper room where the disciples were and show them his glorified wounds. He walked with his two downcast friends on the road to Emmaus, teaching them hope. And he walked along the shore of Lake Galilee one last time, to forgive Peter of his betrayal and to give Peter his apostolic mission. There was no stopping the resurrected Jesus; and at each footstep along the way, he invited others to walk with him. Each one of us has been created to make a journey of our lives. The question is: Who will we choose as our companion along the way? And toward whom do we walk? In his death and resurrection, Jesus created a way for us to walk with him and towards him. Shall we take the journey with him? Perhaps you would agree with me that there are aspects of our beloved Church in Australia today that have stopped us dead in our tracks; it can feel like we are not walking with Jesus. Yet, as the great Apologist G.K. Chesterton once put it, "Christianity has died many times and risen again; for it had a God who knew the way out of the grave." At a time when the Church seems veiled in the darkness of the tomb, the light of Easter opens for us the discovery of a renewed path along which Jesus walks, and wants us to take. May we find the courage to walk into this future with healing grace, truthful hope and humble love, energised and guided by the presence of the crucified and risen Lord. In the year ahead, I want to invite you to join with me on this journey with the Lord, one that might reveal to us where and how our local Church of Broken Bay is to walk with him. This local journey is being initiated this year as our local part of a shared journey for the entire Church in Australia, leading to a national assembly in 2020 called a Plenary Council. By the grace of God, and through our listening to God and one another, we might come to see the path ahead, a way into our future that follows the Lord s desire for his people. Friends, walk with Christ! Walk in his presence, and by his guiding light. He is our path from death to life, from the darkness of our tombs to a new light of grace. Walk with Christ! Happy Easter to you all! 7 EASTER SUNDAY YEAR B 1st Reading (JB) Acts 10: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles We have eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection from the dead. Peter addressed Cornelius and his household: You must have heard about the recent happenings in Judaea; about Jesus of Nazareth and how he began in Galilee, after John had been preaching baptism. God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil.' Now I, and those with me, can witness to everything he did throughout the countryside of Judaea and in Jerusalem itself: and also to the fact that they killed him by hanging him on a tree, yet three days afterwards God raised him to life and allowed him to be seen, not by the whole people but only by certain witnesses God had chosen beforehand. Now we are those witnesses - we have eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection from the dead - and he has ordered us to proclaim this to his people and to tell them that God has appointed him to judge everyone, alive or dead. It is to him that all the prophets bear this witness: that all who believe in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through his name.' The word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God Responsorial Psalm Ps 117: R. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: 'His love has no end.' R. The Lord's right hand has triumphed; his right hand raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount his deeds. R. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. R. 2nd Reading (JB) Colossians 3:1-4 A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Colossians Look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is. Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God's right hand. Let your thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth, because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God. But when Christ is revealed - and he is your life - you too will be revealed in all your glory with him. The word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God Acclamation 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 Sequence Christians, to the Paschal Victim offer sacrifice and praise. The sheep are ransomed by the Lamb; and Christ, the undefiled, hath sinners to his Father reconciled. Death with life contended: combat strangely ended! Life's own Champion, slain, yet lives to reign. Tell us, Mary: say what thou didst see upon the way. The tomb the Living did enclose; I saw Christ's glory as he rose! The angels there attesting; shroud with grave-clothes resting. Christ, my hope, has risen: he goes before you into Galilee. That Christ is truly risen from the dead we know. Victorious king, thy mercy show! Alleluia, alleluia! Christ has become our paschal sacrifice; let us feast with joy in the Lord. Alleluia! Gospel (JB) John 20:1-9 A reading from the holy Gospel according to John The teaching of scripture is that he must rise from the dead. It was very early on the first day of the week and still dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved. 'They have taken the Lord out of the tomb' she said 'and we don't know where they have put him.' So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb. They ran together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first; he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but did not go in. Simon Peter who was following now came up, went right into the tomb, saw the linen cloths on the ground, and also the cloth that had been over his head; this was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed. Till this moment they had failed to understand the teaching of scripture, that he must rise from the dead. The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 7
