1 The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour 2979 Coloma St /Placerville, CA / Dear friends in Christ, "Ice splits starwise," Sir Thomas Browne wrote. A tap of the pick at the right point, and fissures shoot out in all directions, and the solid block falls in two at the star. The child is born, and history itself falls in two at the star. Whether you believe or do not believe, you date your letters and checks and income tax forms with a number representing how many years have gone by since what happened happened. The world of A.D. is one world, and the world of B.C. is another. (Frederick Buechner, Emmanuel, A Christmas Article) The short Christmas season ends with the Feast of the Epiphany which is12 days after Christmas. Epiphany means to make clear or evident, show up plainly, or to reveal. We associate the Feast of the Epiphany with the story of the Magi, the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. On the Sunday after Epiphany our gospel lesson is always the story of Jesus baptism. The Gospel readings for the rest of the season tell of the miracle of Cana, the calling of the disciples and various miracles and teachings of Jesus. The last Sunday the Epiphany season is always associated with the transfiguration, when Jesus identity as the son of God is revealed. We each have our own journey, like the journey of the Magi, in which we discover the light of Christ within and around us. Let us take time during this season to reflect on those moments as well as be open to the light and love that continues to surround us. 2 Chalking the Door Chalking the Door is one custom that some families and churches do for Epiphany. We invite you to adopt this custom in your family. The family gathers to ask God s blessing on their home and on those who live in or visit the home. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows. A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk to write above the home s entrance, 20 + C + M + B The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, May Christ bless the house. The + signs represent the cross and 2016 is the year. Blessing the Chalk V. Our help is the name of the Lord: R. The maker of heaven and earth. V. The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in: R. From this time forth for evermore. Let us pray. Loving God, bless this chalk which you have created, that it may be helpful to your people; and grant that through the invocation of your most Holy Name that we who use it in faith to write upon the door of our home the names of your holy ones Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, may receive health of body and protection of soul for all who dwell in or visit our home; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Instructions for Blessing the Home Using the blessed chalk mark the lintel of your front door (or front porch step) as follows: 20 + C + M + B + 16 while saying: The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar followed the star of God s Son who became human two thousand and fifteen years ago. May Christ bless our home and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen. Then offer the following prayer: Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the gift of your love; and grant that we may manifest your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen Chalking the door is a way to celebrate and literally mark the occasion of the Epiphany and God s blessing of our lives and home. With time the chalk will fade. As it does we let the meaning of the symbols written sink into the depths of our heart and be manifest in our words and actions the Latin words, Christus mansionem benedictat, May Christ bless the house. 7 Ministry with Veterans Reflection by David Zelinsky Part 1 "Try to keep her with him. He needs her. He has TBI and full blown PTSD. And get him to the bank. He has to open a new account to get his VA benefit after his old account was ransacked." But CAP was stuck. He could only focus on the crime against him. He could not move on, and open the new account. "Have you filed a police report? Where's my money? Leave me alone, JES, this is my business." He would not let her help him. I took them to a motel, and gave them some instructions. No matter. CAP circled back to the scene of the crime. When I returned with him, JES was in the fetal position, working out her own issues of separation anxiety and fear of abandonment. Next morning, CAP had gone back to the bank. JES gave up. Her note said, "I just wanted to be your friend Part 2 A charity in South Lake Tahoe called. "We're putting JAY on the bus to Placerville." "No! Send him to Reno! There's a VA and homeless shelter there." "He doesn't want to go to Reno. He us scared and homeless." There was no time. Handed him a grocery card. Got his prescription started. Got him to the Upper Room. Explained the Nomadic Shelter. At the Upper Room, set him down next to ER John, who was not a Veteran, but well known for his frequent visits to ER. Trouble was, I had to go. He had to wait until later to get his prescription filled. And he HAD to have it filled. He said. He would miss the shuttle to the Nomadic Shelter, and he could walk only short distances. A nice lady was at the table. Maybe a church lady. "Don't worry. I'll take care of him." Set up a motel for the night, since he would miss the Nomadic Shelter bus. The lady would take him to the motel after his prescription was filled. I had to go. The lady walked past me, and my antenna went off. No matter. I had to go. The next morning, I had to check on him. Had she taken him on a ride, and down something scary bad to him? Asked Mark, the manager, which room he was in. And had he noticed the lady? "Oh yeah. And she spent the night with him!" Had a brief chat with JAY. Nomadic Shelter tonight for you, buddy. See you this evening at the Upper Room. That evening, he was ripped. JEN, the "church" lady, helped him into my car. Page 7 of 12

8 Mather. ER-detox-Recovery-Dorm-Yountville. Got him to ER. Once wheeled inside he snapped into attention. "I want a medical detox. I don't want the pain. Put me on suicide watch." Seems he had already been through this before. ER said, "why didn't you go to Reno?" Good question. JAY considered the path to recovery, but pulled back. He got JEN to take him back to El Dorado County after he could be legally released. JEN liked JAY a lot, but saw he was bent on self destruction. Her note said, "I just wanted to be your friend..." submitted by Jim Sinclair St. Andrew s Society of Sacramento The original St. Andrew s Society was founded in Edinburgh, Scotland in the 16th century. Names for the patron Saint of Scotland, it lends assistance to widows, orphans, and others in need of help. In the United States, the St. Andrew s Society celebrates Scottish heritage and traditions through social events, fundraising, fostering good will, understanding and communication. St. Andrew s Societies are found all over the world but there is no central organization or mother chapter. The St. Andrew s Society of Sacramento is an autonomous organization. Membership is limited to male members who were born in Scotland or who are direct descendants of people born in Scotland. Our Sacramento society gives scholarships for study of special Scottish cultural classes (e.g. highland Dancing, Celtic Harp, Bagpipes, Scottish Heavy Athletics). We are a social group with activities that may include dinners, luncheons, Tartan Balls, Kirking of the Tartan (a church service blessing the tartans), Hogmany (the new year), Robert Burns Dinner, and Investiture (accepting new members and Renewal of Brotherhood) as well as internal special interest groups for genealogy, Gaelic language, and history. Scottish Tartans The Tartan is a colorful plaid that represents a clan or family. Each clan has its own design. A clan may have more than one tartan such as dress or formal, hunting, ancient and modern. There are also Tartans for regions, military groups, pipe bands, etc. My kilt is the Sinclair ancient hunting tartan. The Clan Sinclair has been wearing this tartan since the 1200s. The Sinclairs also have a modern version of the hanging tart, an ancient and modern dress tartan (in red), and a dance tartan (in blue). Page 8 of 12
