2 APRIL 1 EASTER SUNDAY THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD PASTOR S NOTES APRIL 01, 2018: EASTER SUNDAY THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD: THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HAS MADE; LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD : I wish to express my heartfelt, warmest EASTER WISHES to all the good people of the Church of Saint Maria Goretti. I am so blessed to be among you and happy to be here. I truly want to thank you for all your Easter wishes expressed in so many ways. Thank you also to all who planned, prepared for and celebrated this HOLY WEEK and Glorious Easter Day. And now, together, we look forward to our 50 day celebration of THE GREAT SUNDAY as the Easter Season is called. It is to the year, as Sunday is to the week one seventh (1/7th) of the year. Our English word for Easter derives from an ancient root that means to shine, or dawn or the direction of the sunrise. The Church will give us 50 days to let the light of Christ s Resurrection dawn in our hearts and minds until it burns brightly in the fire of Pentecost. 2. THE SEQUENCE: This Sunday, the Church sings a sequence an ancient, poetic song that precedes the singing of the Gospel acclamation. The Easter Sequence, Victimae Paschali laudes, is a song of praise to the Paschal Victim that also reflects the Gospel account of Mary s encounter with the Risen Lord. 3. EASTER SEASON LITURGICAL ASPECTS: a) The Rite of Sprinkling replaces the Penitential Rite; b) The Glory to God will be sung; c) the Preface, Our Father and Doxology will be chanted d) The Intercessions response will be Risen Lord, hear our prayer. 4. ABOUT EASTER SUNDAY: The celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ continues into Easter Sunday morning. Easter Sunday marks the end of the Triduum and is the first day of the Easter Octave (8 days). Forty days of fast lead to 50 days of FEAST. 5. EASTER OCTAVE: We celebrate (as with Christmas) this Feast for eight (8) days a symbol of eternity i.e. one day longer than a seven (7) day week. The Second Sunday of Easter, as decreed by the late St. (Pope) John Paul II, has been further titled DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY. 6. NEW EASTER WATER: This Easter water may be taken to your homes to be sprinkled there, or put in your own door fonts, as you bless yourself coming in or going out. The canister to receive this will be RELOCAT- ED in the Sanctuary in front of the Paschal candle until Sunday, April 08th. You may bring your own containers, or purchase a small plastic holy water bottle in the sacristy for a $2.00 offering (unless you are unable to afford this. Which, in that case, you may HAVE one.). 7. EASTER LILY FLOWER MEMORIALS: The insert of these memorials appear in this Easter bulletin. Thank you for your generosity. These individuals will be prayerfully remembered throughout these 50 days. 8. OUR PARISH S NEWESTCONVERTS: In the name of the parish, and myself, it gives me Great Pleasure to welcome to our family community, Joseph Malecki and Dylan Reedy, who, at the Easter Vigil, were formally welcomed into the Catholic Church by their Profession of Faith and their reception of the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist. I invite you to express your own individual expressions of welcome when you see them. 9. MEMORIAL BOOK (containing Endowment contributors): This has now been installed in the vestibule area of the Church. Its location is on the LEFT WALL, just before going through the first set of wooden doors. It is directly on the opposite side of the vestibule from the Church Cornerstone St. Maria Goretti was beatified (first step to Canonization) on April 27 th ; and canonized a Saint June 24, My thought is to not wait until June, but, instead to formally bless the Memorial Book at the conclusion of the 4:30 liturgy on April 28 th. 10. PERIOD OF MYSTAGOGY: This is the Fourth Period of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The rite says, This is a time for the community and the neophytes (newly converted) to grow in deepening their grasp of the Paschal Mystery and in making it a part of their lives through meditation on the Gospel, sharing in the Eucharist and doing works of charity s 4 TH ANNUAL CATHOLIC MEN S CONFERENCE FOR THE DIOCESE OF SCRANTON: Be a man: Christ is here! Come and see! May 5, 2018, from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the King s College gym in Wilkes- Barre. Three nationally-known presenters will highlight various aspects of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Registration 7:00 a.m. with continental breakfast. Doors will open at 11:00am for an opportunity for you to treat yourself to a wonderful lunch and just relax, have a good look at our basket raffle and visit with your friends prior to the bingo which will begin at 1:00pm. Our homemade food is delicious and requested by those who have had an opportunity to treat themselves in the past. Space is limited!
