HOOGLANDSE KERK CHORAL EVENSONG Sunday 24 August 2014 Tenth Sunday after Trinity 1900
DE LEIDSE CANTORIJ is conducted by HANS BRONS The organ is played by THEO VISSER AD ALBLAS Preacher Jaarthema: Eén met de ENE We welcome you to this historic church in the heart of Leiden. There has been a place of Christian worship here since Our aim here is to offer beauty in stone and song to God, the giver of all beauty and goodness. Based on the services held daily in the medieval Church, evensong as arranged in the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Church has been sung since the sixteenth century. Much of the service is sung by the choir on our behalf and our participation is by our meditation and our prayers. However, we invite you to join in the singing of the hymns and in those parts of the service which are said together. As words and music come together and enrich each other, our senses and intellects, our hearts and minds are drawn closer to God. Bijzonder Kerkenwerk Leiden Leidse Binnenstadsgemeente You are kindly requested to switch off your mobile telephone. 2
ORGAN VOLUNTARY Fantasia in c, BWV Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Please observe silence during the organ voluntary as it is a time of preparation for worship. INTROIT Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden, und der Tag hat sich geneiget. All stand as the Choir and Ministers enter. HYMN NEH 379 Josef Rheinberger ( ) Choir: All: All: In the Cross of Christ I glory, Towering o er the wrecks of time; All the light of sacred story Gathers round its head sublime. When the woes of life o ertake me, Hopes deceive and fears annoy, Never shall the Cross forsake me: Lo! it glows with peace and joy. When the sun of bliss is beaming Light and love upon my way, From the Cross the radiance streaming, Adds more lustre to the day. 3
All: Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, By the Cross are sanctified; Peace is there that knows no measure, Joys that through all time abide. John Bowring ( ) OPENING SENTENCES Said by the preacher THE PRECES O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord's name be praised. All sit. Herbert Sumsion ( ) PSALM 105 Confitemini Domino O give thanks unto the Lord, and call upon his Name : tell the people what things he hath done. O let your songs be of him, and praise him : and let your talking be of all his wondrous works. Rejoice in his holy Name : let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Seek the Lord and his strength : seek his face evermore. Remember the marvellous works that he hath done : his wonders, and the judgements of his mouth. 4
O ye seed of Abraham his servant : ye children of Jacob his chosen. He is the Lord our God : his judgements are in all the world. He hath been alway mindful of his covenant and promise : that he made to a thousand generations; Even the covenant that he made with Abraham : and the oath that he sware unto Isaac; And appointed the same unto Jacob for a law : and to Israel for an everlasting testament; Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan : the lot of your inheritance; When there were yet but a few of them : and they strangers in the land; What time as they went from one nation to another : from one kingdom to another people; He suffered no man to do them wrong : but reproved even kings for their sakes; Touch not mine Anointed : and do my prophets no harm. All stand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost : as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. All sit. Sir Frederick Arthur Gore Ouseley ( ) THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 54: 7-13 MAGNIFICAT My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me. And holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm. He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 5
He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things. And the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel. As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. All stand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. All sit. The Gloucester Service - David Bednall (b. 1979) THE SECOND LESSON John 14: NUNC DIMITTIS Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel. All stand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. The Gloucester Service - David Bednall Preacher: Now let us confess our faith. THE APOSTLES CREED 6
All say: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. HYMN NEH 499 Choir: Thy kingdom come, O God, Thy rule, O Christ, begin; Break with thy iron rod The tyrannies of sin. All: Where is thy reign of peace And purity and love? When shall all hatred cease, As in the realms above? 7
Choir: All: All: All sit. When comes the promised time That war shall be no more, And lust, oppression, crime, Shall flee thy face before? We pray thee Lord, arise, And come in thy great might; Revive our longing eyes, Which languish for thy sight. O er lands both near and far Thick darkness broodeth yet: Arise, O morning Star, Arise, and never set. Lewis Hensley ( ) THE SERMON Zoeken, nooit verzadigd -over de spiritualiteit van Kick Bras THE LESSER LITANY, THE LORDS PRAYER, AND THE RESPONSES The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. 8
O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the King. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. COLLECT OF THE DAY Let thy merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of thy humble servants; and that they may obtain their petitions make them to ask such things as shall please thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. COLLECT FOR PEACE O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. COLLECT FOR AID AGAINST ALL PERILS Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. 9 Herbert Sumsion
