Such a request is frequently referred to as a Mass Stipend. Here at the Old Cathedral we are most often able to fulfill the requests for specific dates and times. We would like to offer each of you to feel free to submit such Mass Intention requests either through the mail or by placing your request in the Sunday collection. Who are they and what do they do? A A bishop is in charge of a diocese and appoints people to help with its administration. Two of those positions are the Vicar General and the Chancellor. Both play a role in the life of a diocese, despite the many jokes priests may tell at their expense! A chancellor is the archivist of a diocese, charged with task of keeping the records of the diocese. Often a bishop may add other responsibilities and the chancellor may end up being like the executive director of the diocesan office. The chancellor does not need to be a priest. The vicar general is a priest, appointed by the bishop and acts in the name of the bishop in administering the diocese. He has an advanced degree in canon law or theology. He also has executive authority within the diocese. This means that he is involved in the day-to-day pastoral and temporal administration of the diocese. Canon law does not allow a bishop to appoint a relative to the position, nor the priest in charge of the sacrament of penance. In both cases, the purpose of the law is to avoid conflicts of interest. LPi The various forms of piety toward the Mother of God, which the Church has approved within the limits of sound and orthodox doctrine, according to the dispositions and understanding of the faithful, ensure that while the mother is honored, the Son through whom all things have their being (cf. Col 1:15 16) and in whom it has pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell (cf. Col 1:19) is rightly known, loved and glorified and his commandments are observed. 3 Announcing... THE OLD CATHEDRAL WEBSITE Recently we launched the new Old Cathedral website. You can now find us online at We are still in the early stages of our website development. Currently at this web address you may find basic information about the Old Cathedral including a brief history of the parish, the Mass Schedule, a contact screen to make an inquiry, and various basic information about scheduling a holy sacrament. In the near future, we will enhance the site to include information on how you may make an electronic donation to the church, photos of religious statues and artifacts, a schedule of special events and holy day Eucharistic celebrations, updates on the restoration project, and much more. Bookmark on your preferred web browser and check back often for more updates! A statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, holding the brown scapular and the Christ Child, at the National Padre Pio Center in Barto, Pennsylvania. OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Feast Day: July 16 Hermits lived on Mount Carmel near the Fountain of Elijah (northern Israel) in the 12th century. They had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. By the 13th century they became known as Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. They soon celebrated a special Mass and Office in honor of Mary. In 1726 it became a celebration of the universal Church under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. For centuries the Carmelites have seen themselves as specially related to Mary. Their great saints and theologians have promoted devotion to her and often championed the mystery of her Immaculate Conception. Saint Teresa of Avila (October 15) called Carmel the Order of the Virgin. Saint John of the Cross (December 14) credited Mary with saving him from drowning as a child, leading him to Carmel and helping him escape from prison. Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus (October 1) believed that Mary cured her from illness. On her First Communion, she dedicated her life to Mary. During the last days of her life she frequently spoke of Mary. There is a tradition (which may not be historical) that Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the gospel call to prayer and penance a call that Mary models in a splendid way. AmericanCatholic.org Scripture Reflection In the Gospel this weekend, the scholar of the law is looking for the way to life. His question is sincere. He is trying to understand what is required of him. He can quote the law, indeed, probably even lives by it. But the question of who is a neighbor is one of legal precision. The interpretation of the Mosaic law based the fact of one being a neighbor on a covenantal relationship. Those who worshipped the one God were considered as one's neighbor. In the time of Jesus this narrow interpretation was being reconsidered. Some religious scholars suggested that a more universal application was needed, while others held to the tradition that Samaritans, foreigners, and those outside the law were not neighbors under the law. Jesus makes his position clear, although by coming at it from the other direction. It is the Samaritan who shows himself to be a neighbor. Maybe that is where the argument lies for us today. We cannot define with legal precision who is going to be a neighbor to us. All we can do is decide to be neighborly toward others, that is, to show them the very love with which we love ourselves. And then rely on God's mercy that someone will be there for us as a neighbor in our time of need. 5 HISTORY OF THE OLD CATHEDRAL For a good number of years this column has addressed the history of this Old Cathedral. The source has been The Story of the Old Cathedral by Reverend Monsignor Elmer H. Behrmann, Ph.D., originally published in 1949 and revised in Beginning today in light of the Restora on Project we are happy to introduce a new source: The Catholic Heritage of St. Louis: A History of the Old Cathedral Parish. This work was compiled by Bishop Paul C. Schulte and published in The content shown here is from Bishop Schulte s original manuscript. Our story begins with how Bishop Joseph Rosa hoped this first cathedral west of the Mississippi River would develop. C XXVI Rosati s Description of His Cathedral This august temple, raised in the city of St. Louis, MO, was begun about three years ago. The first stone thereof was blessed and set in place with the customary ceremonies on August 1, 1831, by the present Bishop of the Diocese. Thanks to the munificence of the reigning Sovereign Pontiff, Gregory XVI, through the generous aid given by the Association for the Propagation of the Faith established in France, and of the Leopoldine Institution established in the dominions of His majesty the Emperor of Austria; by means of the repeat efforts of the inhabitants of St. Louis who have contributed according to their capacity, either by subscriptions, of by collections taken a number of times for this purpose; finally owing to other resources drawn from a piece of property adjacent to the old church, and loans of various sums of money obtained at reasonable rates, this edifice has been continued without other interruptions than those which were caused by the rigor of the winter, which in this country does not permit building operations; and has at length been put in condition of being consecrated. The dimensions of the church are as follows: Length, 136 feet; width:, 84 feet; and height, 40 feet. The entire façade, and also 27 feet of sides near the façade, are of beautiful polished stone, much like marble. The portico is sustained in front by four columns of the same material 27 feet high, and of a diameter of four feet. It is 40 jeet long and 12 feet deep, Doric, after the fashion of the ruins of Paestum. On the frieze of that portico and of the whole façade is read in relief the following inscription: A. MLCCCXXXIV. Above the three doors are placed three slabs of Italian marble, upon which is engraved the following text of the Apocalpse: Ecce Tabernaculum Dei cum hominibus, et habitabit cum eis; this inscription is in Latin over the middle door, in English over the door to the east, and in French over the other. The Gospel text: Domus mea Domus orationis vocabitur, is inscribed on two other slabs in French and in English on either side of the façade. Over the parapet surmounting the outer cornice of the façade are placed six candelabra of stone. The portico is crowned by a beautiful pediment in the center of which is engraved in large gilded Hebrew characters the ineffable Name of God surmounted by rays. Back of the pediment arises the belfry about 20 feet square and 40 feet high above the apex of the façade which itself is 50 feet high; it is all constructed of polished stone, ornamented with two rows of pilasters and cornices. In the center of the lower row of pilasters is on the four sides a clock s dial face; and in the center of the upper row are the openings of the bell house. Time has not permitted to finish the octagonal spire, 45 feet high, before the consecration of the church, the approach of winter having compelled the workmen to suspend work until next spring. To be continued... Fi eenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4b
