What is the significance of this particular church? A It is true that Pope Francis opened his pontificate with a visit to Rome s main basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a day after cardinals elected him as the first pope from the Americas. This past week he made Basilica of Saint Mary Major his first stop after returning to Rome following the week-long World Youth Day 2013 festivities in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. First raised at the order of Pope Liberius in the mid-fourth century, the Liberian basilica was rebuilt by Pope Sixtus III shortly after the Council of Ephesus affirmed Mary s title as Mother of God in 431. Rededicated at that time to the Mother of God, Saint Mary Major is the largest church in the world honoring God through Mary. Standing atop one of Rome s seven hills, the Esquiline, it has survived many restorations without losing its character as an early Roman basilica. Its interior retains three naves divided by colonnades in the style of Constantine s era. Fifth-century mosaics on its walls testify to its antiquity. Saint Mary Major is one of the four Roman basilicas known as patriarchal cathedrals in memory of the first centers of the Church. Saint Mary s is the See of Antioch, where Mary is supposed to have spent most of her life. On the church calendar we celebrate the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major on August 5. Our parish is proud of its more than 240 year history as a self-supporting Roman Catholic Parish. Your presence, prayer and generous kindness continue to make it so. We thank all who shared their financial resources with the Old Cathedral. Welcome to Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France Page 2

3 Stewardship Reflection Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. Luke 12:15 The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle. SAINT CAJETAN 1480 to 1557 Feast Day: August 7 Like most of us, Cajetan seemed headed for an ordinary life first as a lawyer, then as a priest engaged in the work of the Roman Curia. His life took a characteristic turn when he joined the Oratory of Divine Love in Rome, a group devoted to piety and charity, shortly after his ordination at 36. When he was 42 he founded a hospital for incurables at Venice. At Vicenza, he joined a disreputable religious community that consisted only of men of the lowest stations of life and was roundly censured by his friends, who thought his action was a reflection on his family. He sought out the sick and poor of the town and served them. The greatest need of the time was the reformation of a Church that was sick in head and members. Cajetan and three friends decided that the best road to reformation lay in reviving the spirit and zeal of the clergy. (One of them later became Paul IV.) Together they founded a congregation known as the Theatines (from Teate [Chieti] where their first superior-bishop had his see). They managed to escape to Venice after their house in Rome was wrecked when Emperor Charles V s troops sacked Rome in The Theatines were outstanding among the Catholic reform movements that took shape before the Protestant Reformation. He founded a monte de pieta ( mountain [or fund] of piety ) in Naples one of many charitable, nonprofit credit organizations that lent money on the security of pawned objects. The purpose was to help the poor and protect them against usurers (loan sharks). Cajetan s li le organization ultimately became the Bank of Naples, with great changes in policy. He was beatified on October 8, 1629, by Pope Urban VIII. On April 12, 1671, Cajetan was canonized. He is known as the patron saint of the unemployed, gamblers, job seekers and good fortune. AmericanCatholic.org At his death he will not take along anything, his glory will not go down after him! Psalm 49:18 Scripture Reflection The Gospel this weekend offers a perspective on the material world. While possessions are needed, Jesus says, "One's life does not consist of possessions" (Lk 12:15). This comment by Jesus is not something new to any of us. We have heard this all before. But we also know that there is wisdom in storing up for ourselves. As a matter of fact, saving for the future is an act of personal responsibility. We are constantly told to save for retirement, to have a rainy-day fund, to set aside something for a vacation instead of going into debt to take one. All of these actions are so we don't become overly dependent on the social fabric and cause an undue burden on others. There is a difference between having a sufficiency and having an excess. When our desire for an excess outstrips our reasonableness and our need, then we are flirting with greed, the very thing that the Gospel warns against. Yes, we may work hard, and save for the future. We may even win the lottery. But when we have more than we need the Lord expects that we use it not just for ourselves but also for others. What we do with the blessings we have makes all the difference. Guide us to the positive steps we need to take to work within the Church for renewal. Help us to be examples of holiness to all. Amen. Sunday, August 4, 2013 Page 3

5 HISTORY OF THE OLD CATHEDRAL For a good number of years this column has addressed the history of this Old Cathedral. The source has been The Story of the Old Cathedral by Reverend Monsignor Elmer H. Behrmann, Ph.D., originally published in 1949 and revised in In light of the Restora on Project, we are happy to introduce a new source: The Catholic Heritage of St. Louis: A History of the Old Cathedral Parish. This work was compiled by Bishop Paul C. Schulte and published in The content shown here is from Bishop Schulte s original manuscript of how Bishop Joseph Rosa hoped this first cathedral west of the Mississippi River would develop. C XXVI Rosati s Description of His Cathedral (Continued) The sacristy is furnished with beautiful cased for the sacred vestments; unfortunately the vestments which we possess are for the most part rather worn out and scarcely usable. The pulpit, located by one of the columns in the middle of the church, is of varnished wood, and of quite an elegant shape. Two hundred pews, disposed regularly in the body of the church, and a number of others in the various galleries, offer to the Catholics of the city, and to the Protestants who come with pleasure and in goodly numbers, the necessary accommodations to hear comfortably the word of God and the expounding of the dogmas of the Catholic religion. As winter here is quite rigorous, there were constructed in the basement two furnaces on the model of the heating apparatus invented recently and used successfully in various cities of this country; thus the furnaces are out of sight, and the hot air is let into the church by means of two circular openings two feet in diameter, covered with a metal grate; the cost of heating is very li le, owing to the abundance of coal in this country; and thus are removed the pretexts and excuses of those who invoked the severity of the weather to dispense themselves from coming to church. The new Cathedral is alongside the residence of the Bishop, from which it is separated only by an alley eighteen feet wide. The secular priests residing in St. Louis and exercising the parochial ministry with the Bishop, live with him a kind of community life, with its rules, its regular exercises of piety, spiritual conferences, reading of Holy Scripture at table, etc. Their life is one of retirement from all useless relations with seculars, from whom they never accept any invitations either to dinner or to supper outside the house, so that they may always be ready for any calls. Their number is still inadequate to the needs, which in this city are harder to satisfy than elsewhere, because the population speaks three languages, French, English and German. A larger number of German Catholics have come, and are continuing to come, to se le in the Diocese and the city of St. Louis. As a rule, they are very pious, industrious, and do honor to the religion to which they profess by word and deed. It is, therefore, necessary to preach in these three languages; yet all the clergy employed in the service of the parish at present consists only of the Bishop, two priests, and a cleric. From time to time a Jesuit comes from the college to preach in English; and on solemn feast days, these Fathers come to help for pontifical functions, so that with the further aid of altar boys vested in red cassocks and surplices, who fulfill the minor offices, the solemnities may be celebrated with proper dignity.
