Pershing Ave. We, as St. Francis Anglican Church, are continuing our journey. Once again, we are relocating and pitching our tent at 5401 N. Pershing Avenue, Stockton. This reminds me of the Tabernacle (meaning tent ), that was built as a tent-like sanctuary that functioned like a mobile house of worship. It could be assembled and disassembled and moved each time the Israelites changed locations during their journey for 40 years in the wilderness after leaving Egypt. (Exodus 25-27). The Tabernacle was also called the Tent of Meeting, that is, as the place where God would meet with His people, Israel. It was a portable sanctuary where God dwelt among his people until the Temple was built. The LORD said to Moses, 2 r Speak to the people of Israel, that they take for me a contribution. 8 And let them make me a y sanctuary, that z I may dwell in their midst. (Exodus 25:1,2,8) This serves as a good reminder that our moving to 5401 N. Pershing Ave. is not only about the suitability of the location, the practicability and functionality of the open spaces and classrooms of its building. It is also and more importantly a reminder that we have here a portable Tent of Meeting where God dwells in our midst, and as such, serves as the presence of God in our neighborhood and in the community at large. So, everything that we have and all that we do in this Tent of Meeting should remind us of God s presence among us. At the center of the sanctuary is the ALTAR on which the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is made present in the sacrament of his Body and Blood under the species of bread and wine. It is also the LORD S TABLE which the people are invited to share in Holy Communion. The LECTERN and the PULPIT where the Lord, present in his Word, is proclaimed in the reading of Sacred Scriptures and in the subsequent preaching on those readings. The NAVE (from Latin, navis meaning ship) referred to as the barque of Peter where the assembly in the pews sit, stand and kneel. Christ is present when this assembly is gathered in his name: Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them (Mt 18:20). Therefore, when we come together to pray and sing in the Church s liturgies, the Lord is present in and with us. The presence of God in our midst is not limited to the Sanctuary. It extends to the classrooms where the Word of God is taught, reflected and shared in Catechism or in Bible Studies; to the Fellowship Hall where coffee and cookies and stories are shared. So, God is present in our midst through our prayer and worship, our teaching, preaching and learning the Word of God, our common fellowship and service one to another. But God s presence among us is meant to be shared with others in what is called MISSION. We have heard it often enough that the MISSION of St. Francis of Assisi Anglican Church is: To proclaim the Good News of Salvation in Jesus Christ through SACRED WORSHIP, SERIOUS DISCIPLESHIP, SELFLESS SERVICE. The challenge is to put this into practice. This is our prayer and our hope. 2 Page 2 Shalom, First of all I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving! To recap in September I talked about why we enter into the church. We come in to take refuge from a hostile world where we leave the temptations the attacks and distractions behind. So we are no longer isolated but return to the church body to be unified with our fellow Christians. Then in October I talked about what happens in worship. This is where we are fed. We get fed spiritually and bodily in the Eucharist, and we work on relationship with God and each other. Now we will talk about why we depart the church to go back out into the world. Before we depart back out into the world we put on the full armor of God so that we may take the Gospel to them. The service we attend prepares us and strengths us to carry the word of God back out into a hostel world. In the service we put on the belt of truth, of who Jesus is. We wear the breastplate of righteousness, which is the blood of Christ that we are baptized into. Then we done the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. And we carry the shield of faith, so that we can deflect and extinguish the arrows of the evil one. Make sure your feet are fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace, so that you may fulfill Jesus commandment to go and make disciples. The armor of God is there ready for you to protect you so put it on, for God is with you so do not be shy or timid when talking about the Gospel! Of course if any of you have done remodeling, you will know there are always unexpected expenses. St Francis has had some of those: Nursery items, additional kitchen storage, extra window coverings for safety, etc. If you have not given, now would be an excellent time to do so. If you already have..could you do alittle more? We pray you will be called to help in some way during this transition.
