PRELUDE: He Is Exalted (Twila Paris) WELCOME ACCLAMATION All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the minister begins. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL: Mark 11:1-11 The presiding minister reads the processional gospel from the baptismal font.. The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. 1 When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, Why are you doing this? just say this, The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately. 4 They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, 5 some of the bystanders said to them, What are you doing, untying the colt? 6 They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9 Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!

3 11 Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. BLESSING OF PALMS The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray together. We praise you, O God, for redeeming the world through our Savior Jesus Christ. Today he entered the holy city in triumph and was proclaimed messiah and king by those who spread garments and branches along his way. Bless these branches and those who carry them. Grant us grace to follow our Lord in the way of the cross, so that, joined to his death and resurrection, we enter into life with you; through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. PRAYER OF THE DAY As we now enter into the contemplation of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ and meditate on the salvation of the world through his sufferings, death, burial, and resurrection, let us pray together. Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 4 FIRST READING: Isaiah 50:4-9a A reading from Isaiah. 4 The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5 The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. 6 I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7 The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9a It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty? Word of God, word of life. SECOND READING: Philippians 2:5-11 A reading from Philippians. 5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself

5 and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. RESPONSIVE HYMN: Prepare the Royal Highway (ELW 264) SERMON Silence for reflection follows the sermon. PASSION INTRODUCTION Oftentimes, to grasp the fullness of something significant, we have to look at both sides. So to approach the meaning of Christ, we have to say two things: Jesus and Christ; human and divine; dead and alive; bread and body. This Sunday celebrates these two sides: we begin by praising Christ with "Hosanna," and we go on to shout "Crucify him!" It is here where we stop in our journey of yelling Hosanna in the highest. And it is here where we turn away from Christ and leave Him abandoned to suffer death. HYMN OF THE DAY: O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (ELW 351) APOSTLES CREED The assembly stands to proclaim the Apostles Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

6 I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Renewed in the promises of baptism, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. A brief silence. We pray for the church. Bless all who call upon your name. Unite your church in bearing witness to the gospel. Pour your love into our hearts, and inspire us to pour out our lives in service to your world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for the world. For palm trees and figs. For trees with leafy branches. For olive groves and gardens. For mountains and hillsides, valleys and canyons. For places affected by rising sea levels or depleted water sources. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for the nations. For peace among all, especially those who honor Jerusalem as holy ground. For all who hold positions of authority and power. For all who suffer oppression, and for those who serve in the armed forces. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for those in need. For those who have suffered betrayal. For those who live in poverty. For those who have no voice or power. For the forsaken and forgotten. For those who are in crisis, and for those who are ill. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for this assembly. For those preparing for baptism or confirmation. For musicians, altar guilds, ushers, and all who lead us in worship. For those who serve our community through food pantries, homeless shelters, and clothing banks. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Here other intercessions may be offered. With thanksgiving, we remember all who have been obedient to your will and all who have died in faith. Bring us with them into your glory, to dwell with you in life eternal. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Trusting in your covenant of mercy, O God, we lift our prayers to you, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray together. Merciful God, receive the sacrifice of our praise and thanksgiving and the offering of our lives, that following in the way of the cross, we may know the joy of the resurrection; through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER LORD S PRAYER Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

8 Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. PASSION READING: Mark 15:1-15 A reading from Mark. 1 As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. 2 Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so." 3 Then the chief priests accused him of many things. 4 Pilate asked him again, "Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you." 5 But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed. 6 Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked. 7 Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. 8 So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. 9 Then he answered them, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?" 10 For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. 12 Pilate spoke to them again, "Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?" 13 They shouted back, "Crucify him!" 14 Pilate asked them, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify him!" 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION MILESTONE: Today during Sunday School, our K-6th grade students will talk about what Holy Communion is. The chalices have been painted and are awaiting Maundy Thursday worship. For those young people who have not made their First Holy Communion yet, we will celebrate that milestone during worship on Maundy Thursday, March 29, when our new communicants will receive the blood of Christ from their own chalices. Please pray for our young people as they mark this milestone in their faith lives! CONGREGATIONAL MEETING: There will be a special congregational meeting on Sunday, May 6, after worship. The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss the Gruver Room remodeling project and to elect a council member to fill a vacancy. More information will be forthcoming.

11 HOLY WEEK AND EASTER SERVERS: You are invited to sign up to serve during worship services during Holy Week, Easter Sunday, and throughout the Easter season. Sign-up sheets have been posted on the sign-up board in the Gruver Room. Of special note is the addition of a communion assistant to serve as a second chalice bearer alongside Pastor Nate and the lector. If you haven t served in worship before, or if you have but would like to try another job out, feel free to contact the church office, and we would be happy to walk you through these areas of service! SPECIAL COLLECTION: Interfaith-Good Samaritan and the United Way are coordinating fundraising efforts to assist victims of the fire at Wade s Trailer Court. If you are able to give, specially marked envelopes for this purpose have been placed in the pew racks. Gifts may be placed in the offering plates, brought to the church office, or taken directly to Interfaith. WORSHIP SERVER SIGN-UP: Are you willing to serve for Sunday worship? We've set up an online sign-up for the many worship leadership opportunities available on Sunday mornings! This will be kept synced with the paper sign-up in the Gruver Room. Signups are available for Maundy Thursday (3/29), Good Friday (3/30), two services on Easter Sunday (4/1), and one service each Sunday through May 13.
