Mitchell To all who mourn or need comfort, To all who are weary and need rest, To all who seek friendship, To all who desire to grow in relationship with God To all who yearn to pray, To all who need a Saviour, And to all whoever will worship, This Church of St. John s opens wide its doors and in the name of Christ our Lord, says - WELCOME. Rector s Message Dear parishioners and friends, throughout our Diocese this Sunday, we celebrate the ministry of women who are making an outstanding contribution to the life and ministry of our church. In serving the gospel, women witness to the love, care and compassion of Christ in so many ways. The women of St. John s are involved in every aspect of parish life and we would not be who we are as a parish without their outstanding contribution. Thank you for your continuing ministry among us. st February 9th commemorates the 71 anniversary of the ordination in China, of The Rev. Dr. Florence Li Tim-Oi, the first woman to be ordained priest in the Anglican Communion. She was made deacon in 1941, and was given charge of the Anglican congregation in Macao, which was thronged with refugees from war-torn China. The Bishop of Hong Kong, on January 25, 1944 ordained her a priest in the Church of God. Under oppression, to defuse controversy, in 1946 she surrendered her priest s license, but not her Holy Orders, the knowledge of which carried her through Maoist persecution. For the next 39 years, she served faithfully under difficult circumstances, particularly after the Communists took over mainland China. In 1983, arrangements were made for her to come to Canada, where she was appointed as an honorary assistant at St. John s Chinese congregation and St. Matthew s parish in Toronto. From that date until her death in 1992, she exercised her priesthood with such faithfulness and quiet dignity that she won tremendous respect for herself and increasing support for other women seeking ordination. We give thanks for the witness of her faith. Let us give thanks for the ministry of Anglican Women and women around the world. God bless you and have a great week. Fr. The Collect of the Day Celebrant Let us pray to our healing God that he may cure us from all our ills. The community prays silently. The celebrant then says the collect. 3 Compassionate and loving God, when Jesus healed those who were ill from all sorts of diseases he revealed you as a God of life and happiness. Let Jesus cast out of us all evil, fear and hatred, sin and death. Fill us with his tender love and concern, that we too may follow him in bringing his healing power to all those who suffer. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen. The Proclamation of the Word A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ISAIAH Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God"? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. ISAIAH 40:21-31 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM REFRAIN Praise the Lord who heals the brokenhearted. Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises to our God! how pleasant it is to honour him with praise! The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel. R He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He counts the number of the stars and calls them all by their names. R Great is our Lord, mighty in power; there is no limit to his wisdom. The Lord lifts up the lowly, but casts the wicked to the ground. Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make music to our God upon the harp. R 4

3 He covers the heavens with clouds and prepares rain for the earth; He makes grass to grow upon the mountains and green plants to serve mankind. R He provides food for flocks and herds and for the young ravens when they cry. He is not impressed by the might of a horse, he has no pleasure in the strength of a man. But the Lord has pleasure in those who fear him, in those who await his gracious favour. Hallelujah! R PSALM 147 A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law) so that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. 1 CORINTHIANS 9:16-23 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got 5 up and went out to a deserted place and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, "Everyone is searching for you." He answered, "Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do." And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. MARK 1:29-39 Sermon The Apostles Creed We confess the faith of our baptism, saying, I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence is kept. Most merciful God, All we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, 6

4 and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon + and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Each one as they are able, makes an offering to the Lord for the needs and responsibilities of the Church to be placed on the altar. The Prayer over the Gifts Read by celebrant God our Father, in these signs of bread and wine we remember your Son Jesus Christ. Accept our disposition to become like him, and so, fill us with his Spirit that we too may become weak with the weak and servants of one another. May your Son thus live in our midst as our Lord for ever and ever. Amen. Eucharistic Prayer V - Lutheran Prayer Book The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Preface It is indeed right that we should praise you, gracious God, for you created all things. You formed us in your own image: male and female you created us. When we turned away from you in sin, you did not cease to care for us, but opened a path of salvation for all people. You made a covenant with Israel, and through your servants Abraham and Sarah gave the promise of a blessing to all nations. Through Moses you led your people from bondage into freedom; through the prophets you renewed your promise of salvation. We praise you Lord, with all the angels, in their song of joy. (Sung) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power, God of might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to use Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. On the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. (Sung) Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. 2x Remembering therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. People Amen. 5 The Breaking of the Bread The celebrant breaks the consecrated bread for distribution, and says: All We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world. God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life. The celebrant invites the people to share in communion and says, The gifts of God for the People of God. All Thanks be to God. Jesus Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Bread of life, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Prince of Peace you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us your peace. The celebrant and people then receive communion. The body of Christ (given for you). The blood of Christ (shed for you). The communicant responds each time, Amen. Prayer after Communion Celebrant Let us pray. Standing, the community prays in silence. God our Father, no one except you can fully understand the pains and joys we experience, for your Son became one of us. By the strength he has given us here, may we reach out to one another and share in each other s laughter and pain. And when words fail us, let us be near to those who suffer in respectful silence, on account of him who is near to us and heals us from all our ills, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 9 ACW Prayer Almighty God, we pray for your blessing and grace on our work and witness as Anglican Church Women in Canada. We give you thanks and praise for giving us wisdom, knowledge and understanding so that we may serve you in spirit and truth. Called to be your church, may our study, learning, worship and service be always to your glory and the building of your kingdom in our communities and throughout the world. In our ministry may we always respond to the needs of others with your love. We pray in the name of the One who redeemed and loves us, your Son, Jesus our Saviour. Amen Doxology Glory to God, All whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. 6 SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER th February 17 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm The entire parish is invited to join the Sunday School community as they prepare supper. All funds raised go to support the child they sponsor overseas. Pancakes and sausages are served. A Free-will offering will be received to support our child overseas. Ash Wednesday, February 18 th There are two Services 10:00 am & 7:00 pm Anglicans are reminded that Ash Wednesday, along with Good Friday, is observed with special acts of discipline and self-denial, such as fasting, alms giving to those in need and works of charity. The Season of Lent is a time of deepened prayer and spiritual discipline intended to make us more loving, kind and generous in our service of God and others. Check out all the opportunities this Lent to grow spiritually. SOUPER MARKET The joint choirs and music committee at St. John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg present their 4th annual 'Souper Market' on Saturday, February 14 at 11 am to 1:30 pm in St. John's Parish Hall, 64 Townsend Street in Lunenburg. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. Enjoy tasty soups and desserts and visit our treasure tables where you can purchase a variety of items old and new. LENTEN CAFÉ, FELLOWSHIP & WORSHIP rd Our 3 annual Lunenburg Lenten Café will be held once again at Zion Lutheran Church the Wednesdays in Lent, from 11am - 11:45am. Each week, various clergy lead a creative worship and reflection. February 18 - St. John s, February 25 - St. Andrew s, March 4 - St. Norbert s, March 11- Zion, March 18 - St. Barnabas, March 25 - Central United. The community is encouraged to attend these services. The Offering is for the Food Bank. Lenten Music & Meditation will be held at St. John s Church each Wednesday during Lent 12 Noon. Lenten Soup Luncheons will be held Wednesdays in March at Central United Church 11:30am - 1:30pm. Cost is $8.00. Indeed, music has been a vital part of St. John s. On May 28, 2006 a new 2005 Casavant Pipe Organ with 1816 pipes was dedicated. Guest organist was Jacquelin Rochette, head of organ design and Master Voicer, with Casavant Freres, the builder of the new organ.
