1 19 th Sunday of Pentecost September 25, 2016 St. John s Anglican Church Lunenburg, Nova Scotia Celebrating 263 of faith Rector: Archdeacon Michael H. Mitchell To all who mourn or need comfort, To all who are weary and need rest, To all who seek friendship, To all who desire to grow in relationship with God To all who yearn to pray, To all who need a Saviour, And to all whoever will worship, This Church of St. John s opens wide its doors and in the name of Christ our Lord, says - WELCOME. Rector s Message Welcome everyone to St. John s today. While we are on vacation, we are pleased that Fr. Alvin Westgate is priest in charge. In this Season of Creation, we are invited to mind the many gifts we are given by God for life and prosperity. At the same time, Jesus constantly reminds his disciples of their responsibility to work with God to ensure that the benefits of creation are shared by all God s children. In practical terms it means opening our eyes, ears and our hearts to the needs of others. It is said of God in the Old Testament that God saw the misery of his people, and, seeing it, he liberated them. Jesus also saw the misery of the people around him and he did all he could to free them. In our country and in many parts of the world there is a wide gap between the rich and the poor. We may ask ourselves, What can I do about all this misery? My means are very limited, and I cannot carry the burden of the world. This is true. Jesus s story reminds us to start small, to start with our neighbour. If each of us contributes their share toward solving the problems of poverty, need, and suffering, how much better our whole world would become and God s kingdom would reign on earth! In this Eucharist, let us pray for eyes and hearts that see and respond. May God bless you this week. 2 The Holy Eucharist Prelude: Prelude and Fugue in E Minor BWV 533 J. S. Bach Please stand for Processional Hymn Hymn #4 Christ Whose Glory Fills the Skies The Gathering of the Community Celebrant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, People All and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. God is calling to us now and is gathering us in, To sing, to pray, to listen and to speak. God is searching for us now and gathering us in, To witness, to act, to share and speak out. God is rejoicing for God has gathered us in. So let us rejoice with God, in song, word and prayer. * Glory To God Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Children s Message The Collect of the Day Celebrant Let us pray. The community prays silently. The celebrant says the collect. Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered by your Holy Spirit into one, may show forth your power among all peoples. We give thanks for the welcome you show to all peoples, may our presence here today be to the glory of your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen 3 The Proclamation of the Word A READING FROM THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET AMOS Thus says the LORD the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall! Improvising to the music of the harp, like David, they devise their own accompaniment. They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph! Therefore, now they shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton revelry shall be done away with. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 1 Amos 6:1a, 4-7 PSALM 91 On Eagles Wings # You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in His shadow for life, say to the Lord: My refuge, my Rock in whom I trust! And He will raise you up on eagle s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand. 2. The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you no fear: under His wings your refuge, His faithfulness your shield. 3. You need not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day; though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come. 4. For to His angels He s given a command to guard you in all of your ways; upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO TIMOTHY Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it; but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. But as for you, child of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, which 4

3 he will bring about at the right time - he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honour and eternal dominion. Amen. As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life. 1 TIMOTHY 6:6-19 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn #497 Eternal Ruler of the Ceaseless Round The Gospel Reader The Lord be with you. People And also with you. THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said, There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames. But Abraham said, Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us. He said, Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father s house for I have five brothers that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment. Abraham replied, They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them. He said, No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent. He said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead. Luke 16:19-31 The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 5 Sermon Fr. Alvin Westgate The Apostles Creed Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended t o the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence is kept. Most merciful God, 6

4 All we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon + and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Peace All stand, and the celebrant addresses the people. The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The assembly greets one another in the name of the Lord. The Celebration of the Eucharist The Preparation of the Gifts Offertory Hymn #501 Through All the Changing Scenes of Life Representatives of the parish present the gifts of bread and wine for the Eucharist. Each one as they are able, makes an offering to the Lord for the needs and responsibilities of the Church to be placed on the altar. The Prayer over the Gifts Read by celebrant God of power, the glory of your works fills us with wonder and awe. Accept our offering this day, and help us to live in peace and harmony with all your creation that we may use our gifts and resources for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving - Eucharistic Prayer #4 Sung Setting Community Mass by Richard Proulx found in Common Praise Hymn Book The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 7 It is right to give you thanks and praise, O Lord, our God, sustainer of the universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home; by your will they were created and have their being. From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill; you made us the stewards of creation. But we turn against you, and betray your trust; and we turn against one another. Again and again you call us to return. Through the prophets and sages you reveal your righteous law. In the fullness of time you sent your Son, born of a woman, to be our Saviour. He was wounded for our transgressions, and bruised for our iniquities. By his death he opened to us the way of freedom and peace. Therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: (Sung #732) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are you, Lord our God, for sending us Jesus, the Christ, who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death, took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, gave it to his friends, and said, Take this, and eat it: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper, he took the cup of wine; he gave you thanks, and said, Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. (Sung #733) Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Gracious God, we recall the death of your Son Jesus Christ, we proclaim his resurrection and ascension, and we look with expectation for his coming as Lord of all the nations. We who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring you these gifts. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this offering of your Church, that we who eat and drink at this holy table may share the divine life of Christ our Lord. 8

5 Pour out your Spirit upon the whole earth and make it your new creation. Gather your Church together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, where peace and justice are revealed, that we, with all your people, of every language, race, and nation, may share the banquet you have promised; through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, all honour and glory are yours, creator of all. Amen. (Sung #734) The Lord s Prayer Let us join with Christians everywhere, in Christ s name: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The celebrant breaks the consecrated bread for distribution, and says: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The celebrant invites the people to share in communion and says, The gifts of God for the People of God. All Thanks be to God. The Communion (Sung #745) Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace. The celebrant and people then receive communion. The body of Christ (given for you). The blood of Christ (shed for you). The communicant responds each time, Amen. This community of faith, welcomes to the Lord s table all who wish to be nourished with the Body and Blood of Christ. During Communion, hymns may be sung and silence may be kept. 9 Communion Hymn #67 We Who Live by Sound and Symbol Announcements Prayer after Communion Celebrant Let us pray. Standing, the community prays in silence. Almighty, and generous, what you create you give away and entrust to us. We try to keep riches and power firmly in our own hands. Teach us that we do not become smaller when we make one another great, nor do we become poorer if others are well-off. Let us be of the mentality of Him who gave up power and might for our sakes, Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen. Doxology Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Blessing & Dismissal Let us be good stewards of all God s good gifts to us, and in the service of God and those around us. And may the blessing of God almighty, Father + Son, and Holy Spirit be with you now and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.
