st 21 Sunday after Pentecost Oct. 21, 2012 St. John s Anglican Church Lunenburg, Nova Scotia Welcome parishioners and visitors to St. John s. At our Annual General Meeting, parishioner Mike Lee volunteered to be the parish representative for the Primates World Relief and Development Fund. Mike and his wife Denyse, bring a real passion to their ministry as long term advocates of PWRDF. We look forward to their leadership in this area. Over the past several years, Canadian Anglicans and other supporters of The Primate s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF), have been incredibly generous in assisting PWRDF to reach out to those devastated by natural disasters around the globe and in Canada: the B.C. forest fires in 2003, the tsunami in South Asia in 2004, the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, the flooding in Pakistan in 2010, the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan in We have seen these stories in the news, and God has moved us to respond with generous hearts to the needs of our sisters and brothers around the world and here at home. Yet a significant portion of the work of PWRDF goes beyond emergency relief, and encompasses ongoing development in communities in Canada and around the globe. Working with partners on the ground, PWRDF is able to reach those at the grassroots level whose lives can be transformed by something as simple as a bicycle, something as basic as clean drinking water. The focus of this service, then, is the amazing work God is doing through PWRDF and our partners around the world. We give thanks, we respond with generosity and we commit ourselves to continue to work together for the fulfillment of God s reign here on earth. The Holy Eucharist Please join in singing today s hymns, together with the Sung Setting of the Eucharist The Mass of Creation by Marty Haugen. Prelude: Chorale Prelude - Ferguson Announcements Hymn #560 God, Whose Almighty Word Please stand and join in singing the Processional Hymn. 2
The Gathering of the Community Celebrant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. All And also with you. All Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. The Collect of the Day Celebrant Let us pray. The community prays silently. The celebrant says the collect. Loving Father, your Son Jesus was your equal and yet he made himself our brother and servant. May his Spirit be alive in us and dispose us to become, like your Son, powerless and vulnerable, so that we can serve one another, especially the weakest of our brothers and sisters. In this way may we experience your unfailing love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Proclamation of the Word A READING FROM THE BOOK OF JOB. Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements - surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? "Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that a flood of waters may cover you? Can you send forth lightnings, so that they may go and say to you, 'Here we are'? Who has put wisdom in the inward parts, or given understanding to the mind? Who has the wisdom to number the clouds? Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens, when the dust runs into a mass and the clods cling together? Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, when they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in their covert? Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food?" JOB 38: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3 PSALM 104:1-9, 25, 37B PSALM REFRAIN - Lord, how manifold are your works! Bless the Lord, O my soul; O Lord my God, how excellent is your greatness! you are clothed with majesty and splendour. You wrap yourself with light as with a cloak and spread out the heavens like a curtain. R You lay the beams of your chambers in the waters above; you make the clouds your chariot; you ride on the wings of the wind. You make the winds your messengers and flames of fire your servants. R You have set the earth upon its foundations, so that it never shall move at any time. You covered it with the deep as with a mantle; the waters stood higher than the mountains. R At your rebuke they fled; at the voice of your thunder they hastened away. They went up into the hills and down to the valleys beneath, to the places you had appointed for them. You set the limits that they should not pass; they shall not again cover the earth. R O Lord, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Hallelujah! R A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Mel-chizedek. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HEBREWS 5:1-10 Hymn #458 Seek Ye First Gospel Reader The Lord be with you. People And also with you. THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to 4
them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They replied, "We are able." Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. MARK 10:35-45 Sermon The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers of the People Please kneel or sit for the prayers. Response: Lord, hear our prayer. Confession and Absolution Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence is kept. All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. 5 We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen Celebrant Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon + and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Peace All stand, and the celebrant addresses the people. The peace of the Lord be always with you. All And also with you. The assembly greets one another in the name of the Lord. The Celebration of the Eucharist The Preparation of the Gifts Offertory Hymn #500 Sister, Let Me Be Your Servant We welcome to the Assembly, members of the Sunday School, students and teachers. Representatives of the parish present the gifts of bread and wine for the Eucharist. Each one as they are able, makes an offering to the Lord for the needs and responsibilities of the Church to be placed on the altar. The Prayer over the Gifts Read by celebrant. Gracious God, you call your people to serve you by serving the least among us. Accept all we offer you this day, and as we give it, may we give you all of ourselves in your service, through our Saviour Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Great Thanksgiving Supplementary Eucharistic Prayer 2 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 6
Source of all being, we give you thanks and praise for your faithful love. You call us into friendship with you and one another to be your holy people, a sign of your presence in the world. When those we trust betray us, unfailingly you remain with us. When we injure others, you confront us in your love and call us to the paths of righteousness. You stand with the weak, and those, broken and alone, whom you have always welcomed home, making the first last, and the last first. Therefore we praise you Lord, with all the angels, in their song of joy. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power, God of might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest Blessed are you, O Holy One: when Hagar was driven into the wilderness you followed her and gave her hope. When Joseph was sold into bondage, you turned malice to your people s good. When you called Israel out of slavery, you brought them through the wilderness into the promised land. When your people were taken into exile you wept with them by the river of Babylon and carried them home. All Restore us, O God, let your face shine! At the right time you sent your Anointed One to stand with the poor, the outcast and the oppressed. Jesus touched lepers, and the sick, and healed them. He accepted water from a woman of Samaria and offered her the water of new life. Christ knew the desolation of the cross and opened the way for all humanity into the redemption of your reconciling love. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Loving and Holy One, recalling Christ s death and resurrection, we offer you these gifts, longing for the bread of tomorrow and the wine of the age to come. Therefore we proclaim our hope. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Pour out your Spirit on these gifts that through them you may sustain us in our hunger for your peace. We hold before you all whose lives are marked by suffering, our sisters and brothers. When we are broken and cast aside, embrace us in your love. Restore us, O God, let your face shine! Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. (Sung) 7 The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The celebrant breaks the consecrated bread for distribution, and says: Creator of all, you gave us golden fields of wheat, whose many grains we have gathered and made into this one bread. All So may your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom. The celebrant invites the people to share in communion and says, The gifts of God for the People of God. All Thanks be to God. The Communion Jesus Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Bread of life, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Prince of Peace you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us your peace. The celebrant and people then receive communion. The body of Christ (given for you). The blood of Christ (shed for you). The communicant responds each time, Amen. The Anglican Church of Canada, welcomes to the Lord s table for Holy Communion all who are baptized and who wish to be nourished with the Body and Blood of Christ. Communion Hymns #578 O Healing River #583 When God Restored Our Common Life Prayer after Communion Let us pray. Standing, the community prays in silence. 8
Giver of all life, we praise you for all the gifts you give to your children. Give us the grace to minister to one another in reverence for all human life, relieving the burdens of impoverishment, hunger, injustice and fear, so that people of all nations may come to your eternal kingdom where there is peace and plenty for all; in the name of Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. Doxology Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Blessing & Dismissal May each of us be willing to be servants of one another, as Jesus serves us. And the blessing of God almighty, Father + Son, and Holy Spirit, be with you now and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Hymn #438 O Jesus, I Have Promised Postlude: Allegro - Bedard This service was taken and adapted from the PWRDF resources published by the Anglican Church of Canada Message from PWRDF Representative, Mike Lee When I first started supporting the PWRDF it was because of an emergency somewhere. After the Boxing Day Tsunami in the Indian Ocean I became a regular contributor. After I accepted the position in the parish as the Primates World Relief Development Fund representative I realized there is a lot more to the program than emergency relief. The most important need now that PWRDF has is in supporting ongoing and continuing help for development. Information is available today for parish members to gain further knowledge of development programs by PWRDF. I will be present to assist anyone wishing more information. Feel free to call me at PWRDF Christmas Cards are available at services as well as at the Parish office. The cost is $15.00 per pack of 12 cards. A $10.00 receipt for income tax purposes will be issued by PWRDF for each pack of cards purchased. 9 LAY MINISTERS TODAY Lay Readers: 8:30 am Holly Mitchell, 10:30 am Velvet Eliuk, Sharon Green Lectors: 8:30 am Brian Demone, Carolyn Hogg 10:30 am Sheila Morris, Lillian Keeping, Server: Aisling Curtin Sidespersons: Catherine Hanhams, Lillian Keeping NEXT SUNDAY OCTOBER 28 th Lay Readers: 8:30 am Barbara Eisenhauer 10:30 am Heather Hyson, Charlene Demone Lectors: 8:30 am Jo Eisenhauer, Ed Jordan 10:30 am Sunday School Children; Server: Brooklyn Green Sidespersons: Catherine Hanhams, Lillian Keeping th NEXT BAPTISM - Sunday, November 18 at 10:30 am.
