1 The Baptism of the Lord January 9, 2011 Rector s Message Here is my servant whom I uphold; he will bring forth justice to the nationsi s. 42:1 Welcome everyone on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Jesus was baptized in the Jordan; the Father recognized him as his beloved Son; the Holy Spirit prepared him for his mission of service. God revealed Jesus to all present, as son of God. By accepting Baptism, Jesus, though he was without sin, made himself one with sinners, with outcasts, with the poor in any way, to bring them God s forgiveness and life. Through his Baptism, Jesus aligns himself fully with our humanity, he is a high priest able to save with compassion, because he lives a fully human life. Through Baptism, Jesus accepted the difficult mission the Father placed before him. Jesus baptism would not only be with water, but would involve a baptism into suffering and death on our behalf. The Proclamation of the Word A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ISAIAH Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. ISAIAH 42:1-9 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3 A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS Peter began to speak to the Gentiles: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ - he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." ACTS 10:34-43 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. Sermon The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit 5 and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended t o the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers of the People Response: Loving God, hear our prayer. 6 Please kneel or sit for the prayers. Confession and Absolution Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence is kept. All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon + and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. So we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and forever. (Sung) The Lord s Prayer The celebrant introduces the Lord s prayer in these or similar words: In joyful expectation, we join with Christians everywhere, saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The celebrant breaks the consecrated bread for distribution, and says: We break the bread of life and that life is the light of the world. All God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life. 8

5 The celebrant invites the people to share in communion and says, The gifts of God for the People of God. All Thanks be to God. Jesus Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Bread of life, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Prince of Peace you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us your peace. The celebrant and people then receive communion. The body of Christ (given for you). The blood of Christ (shed for you). The communicant responds each time, Amen. This community of faith, welcomes to the Lord s table all who are baptized and who wish to be nourished with the Body and Blood of Christ. Blessing & Dismissal The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: And the blessing of God almighty, + the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be amongst you and remain with you always. 6 An Event in Support of PWRDF Musique Royale presents The Three Cantors, a special fund raising event for Primate s World Relief and Development Fund, on Thursday, February 3 at 7:30 pm here at St. John s. Tickets ($20) are now on sale at Fulton s General Store. The Primate s World Relief and Development Fund is one of the most important ways that Anglicans in Canada can bear witness to God s compassion for the world, notes Rev. Canon David Pickett who along with the Rev. Canon William Cliff, the Very Reverend Peter Wall and the fourth cantor, organist Angus Sinclair, are The Three Cantors. ANNUAL REPORTS Committee Reports for our Annual General Meeting, being held Sunday, February 20th, should be ed to Mary at the Parish Office. They are due no later than January 24. STORIES FROM THE RICH PAST OF OUR PARISH Taken from the annual report of the Sunday School 1950 On Advent Sunday a programme was presented by the Primary School. The parents were guests at this entertainment. Prizes were presented to the successful pupils. The Annual Christmas Concert was held on Dec. 26th, in the Parish Hall. The programme was given by the Primary School. The second part was enacted by the Main School. Santa appeared at the close and presented each child with a bag of candy and an orange. Gifts were presented to the Rector, Misses B.Corkum, Ruth Hamm and Catherine Kinley and Mr. Risser. He was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. 'Here's a copy of the service,' he said impatiently. 'But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances.' During the service, the minister paused and said, 'Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up.' At that moment, the substitute organist played, 'O Canada.' And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!
