FISHERMAN S NET Saint Peter s Episcopal Church Lakewood, Ohio Volume 51, Number 04 December 2017 Advent is always a powerful and confusing time. Our surrounding culture works itself into a frenzy of shopping, partying and travelling. We come to church and listen to Jesus and the prophets promise/warn us that the Kingdom of God is coming. On December 25th, our surrounding culture collapses in exhaustion. On December 25th, we BEGIN our celebration of Christmas. It can all be a little confusing, but it's powerful too. This year, in the middle of our Advent season, we have the added blessing of welcoming our bishop, Mark Hollingsworth, for his official regular visitation on December 10th. He will visit with our adult education hour, pay a quick call on the kids in Sunday School, and then lead us in worship at 10:00 a.m. Bishop Hollingsworth will baptize a third-generation member of the Bickerton clan, confirm and receive several folks, and invite all of us to renew together our baptismal covenant. After the liturgy, we will have a scaled-up coffee hour at which you can greet the bishop, and time will be set aside for some question and answer time with him. Amanda Chambers will be coordinating this coffee hour and will love your help! Bishop Hollingsworth always gives a unique gift to this congregation when he visits. On Saturday morning, December 9th, from 8:45 to noon, the A Full and Lovely Advent! Advent 1, Sunday, December 3, Regular Services Advent 2 Saturday, December 9, 8:30 - noon Advent Quiet Day Led by the Bishop Hollingsworth Sunday, December 10, Regular Services Advent 3 Sunday, December 17, Regular Services Advent 4 Sunday, December 24 ONE SERVICE 9:00 a.m. The Feast of the Nativity December 24, services at 4:00 p.m. (family) and 10:00 p.m. December 25, 10:00 a.m. bishop will lead a time of prayerful reflection upon the Baptismal Covenant. All are invited to this quiet morning, and those who do come may, if they wish, formally reaffirm their baptism on Sunday morning and receive laying on the hands by the bishop. There is one not-so-hot thing in this otherwise wonderful month. Christmas Day this year falls on a Monday, which means that the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve are the same Sunday. Please note that we will observe the 4th Sunday of Advent with ONE service at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. Christmas Eve services will follow later in the day at 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Christmas Day worship will be at 10:00 a.m. Then, your Rector will settle down for a long birthday afternoon nap! Finally, I am writing this article in a week when the Building Campaign Ways and Means and Design Committees, the St. Peter's Foundation Supervisors and the Vestry are making decisions about our building project. About the time you read these words, we will decide whether and how to begin the construction project in Spring, If the Vestry does decide to do that, we will invite the parish to a congregational special meeting on Sunday, December 17 to hear and see the good news. And if all goes well and according to plan, we will look forward to breaking ground on Easter Sunday, April 1st.

What a month! I look forward to seeing all of you in these holy and intense weeks as we look forward in hope to the in-breaking of God's Kingdom. A blessed Advent and Christmas to you all. Your Brother in Christ Keith Child Care News A Happy Holiday Season to you all! You will find our annual Giving Tree in the vestibule soon. We collect yearly for Providence House. We are collecting smaller hats, mittens, scarves, earmuffs and the like for our families in need and for Providence House. This means that we will be looking for items that are sizes 0-5T. Providence House is Ohio s first and only licensed crisis nursery in the state. They offer around the clock residential crisis care for newborns to children 5 years old. They are a haven for children who are in eminent danger of abuse or neglect, homeless, have parents that are hospitalized or medically unable to care for their child, or that are dealing with domestic or substance abuse. We have had excellent participation in the past and hope to have the same enthusiasm this year. There are many items on the Providence House wish list and we encourage you to visit their website at if you are interested in learning more. If you would like to share some warm accessories or other items from their wish list, please feel free to add them to the box under our Giving Tree located in the Vestibule! For a glimpse of what s happening at the Center visit our website or check out the insides (and outsides) of our classrooms on Sunday! Thank you for your continued support of our Center. ~ Denise Minor and Courtney Nerad Share the Blessings Share the Blessings rolled on a fast track this year. In three weeks St. Peter s parishioners sponsored all 32 students. I would like to thank Mary and Scott Fitz for their ongoing support and help with this Project. They met me at Waverly School and helped measure, weigh and take pictures of the students. Also, I would like to thank Sarah Taylor for sorting the gifts with me and Leslie Hannan for completing all the necessary shopping. I find myself very grateful for their continuing help and support. As a culmination of the project, we had the presentation party on November 16 th. The students joy at these gifts was obvious to all who were there. As always, we are humbled by the gift of your time, resources and compassion for this endeavor. Thank you for all you do to make Share the Blessings a success each and every year. Hope to see you next year. ~ Jennifer Williams Offering Envelopes If you would like offering envelopes for 2018, they will be on the table at the back of the church. Please call or the office via or office@stpeterslakewood.org to order your envelopes. Also, remember to discard all your old envelopes. Each year many envelope numbers change, making the 2017 and previous years envelopes invalid. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.

December Outreach Focus of the Month: St. Peter s Community Meal How good and pleasant it is when God s people live together in unity! (Psalm 133:1) Each day in the news, it seems like there is another story of disharmony, misunderstanding, and division. We at St. Peter s are here to help! This month, our outreach partner is our own Community Meal Program. Through this program, and with your support, we can add a little more harmony, understanding, and fellowship to the world. Loose plate offerings this month provide the budget for Community Meal, a pair of new adult socks as your fee to the December 3 Parish Breakfast contribute to Christmas gifts for our dinner guests, and your participation is guaranteed to enrich you. Community Meal benefits everyone involved. Our patrons receive a meal prepared by our volunteer cooks, as well as desserts provided by parish bakers. For many, this is their only meal of the day. The food, however, is only one of the reasons they come. Our guests enjoy the fresh flower centerpieces on the tables, and often take them home. They also appreciate the essentials such as toothpaste, extra food, and warm socks in the winter that we frequently provide. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, they come for the companionship. They sit with friends and talk about their day, the weather, and their hopes and concerns. We provide a safe and comfortable gathering spot for our greater community. Here are some comments from our guests at the November meal: We re all grateful. Many people have had their food stamps cut. If it weren t for places like this, people would starve. It s a really convenient location. They cut my check in half this month. I really need this. It s a social event. Community Meal benefits its volunteers as well! The kitchen is its own community of cooks, and all are welcome (If you re nervous about joining in, please keep in mind that I don t know anything about cooking, and they have welcomed me!). Setup volunteers transform the undercroft into a cozy dining room. Servers give out food and receive more than a hundred Thank you! s in return. If you re frustrated about something, scrubbing pots and pans will help you feel better, and towel drying a mountain of silverware with friends gives a great feeling of accomplishment. Here are some testimonials from November s volunteers on why they participate in our Community Meal: I like doing it. I like the people, both the church volunteers and our clients. (Dick Jaquemotte) It s an opportunity to try out new recipes! There are nice people to work with, and it s easy work! (Elaine Fifner) When Sue Lindsley passed away, I volunteered in honor of her memory. And I ve stayed because of the need. (Barb Caravona) You get immediate gratification. Most of the people are really appreciative. Guests will stay and help us clean up. It can be so difficult for a person to ask for help. (Caroline Beredo) I originally came because my parents said I either needed to do a sport or volunteer, but I ve stayed because I really enjoy being with these people and serving them food. (Charles Vogelgesang) God is good, and God is food! (Linda Purdy) We are a community. Society may be stratified, but our meal program allows us to live in harmony with one another (Romans 12:16). Our Meal provides a space and time for us to be in life together. We get to know each other, and we say hi when we cross paths outside of the undercroft. The world may be divisive, but we are like Hebrews 10:24-25: And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another. Or, as Pat Wielinski says, We re doing the work of the Lord. We are Jesus s hands and feet! Please give generously to this month s Outreach Focus, St. Peter s Community Meal. Thank you. ~ Lesley Demagal

Our First Blitz Retreat Small but mighty! The first ever "Blitz Retreat" for St. Peter's adults took place on October 26 and 27 in the peaceful confines of "Centering Space" in Lakewood. Eight people gathered for meals, fellowship, quiet time and a prayerful "tour" of the Book of Common Prayer. We pondered the major changes in spiritual and theological emphasis that mark the 1979 Prayer Book. In particular, we were all moved by the profound changes in baptismal theology, celebrating the "priesthood of all believers." All agreed that the "blitz" format was helpful, prayerful and fun. Our next "Blitz Retreat" will be on Friday and Saturday, January 5-6, again at "Centering Space." We will begin with supper at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. We conclude at 9:00, go home and sleep in our own beds, and return at 8:45 the next morning. The Saturday program will conclude at 4:00 p.m The theme of this retreat will be "The Challenge of the Bible, and the Bible Challenge." This will be a comprehensive overview of the Holy Scriptures, how to read, understand and enjoy them. Participants will be invited to use the weekend to begin their own BIBLE CHALLENGE, in which they commit to a program of reading the entire Holy Scriptures in one calendar year. We will have a third Blitz Retreat in Lent on February 23-24, and the theme will be 22 hours in a Monastery. More info later! Continental Breakfast on Sunday, December 3 rd The Continental Breakfasts have become very popular! The December breakfast is being hosted by St. Peter s Community Meal folks. 5 from our Curate Checking in Follow up from November Dear St. Peter s, In last month s net article I left you (and myself) with a task- This year try to do something in response to one thing that you are grateful for. If you are grateful for the comfortable and warm bed you get to sleep in, then consider volunteering your time at a shelter or purchasing a blanket for one that has a shelter ministry. Just like God first loved us, and so we love (1 John 4:19), being thankful for something is only part of the equation. The other part is responding to that gratefulness. How did it go? Did you respond to your thankfulness for something? This is not a judgement question, rather a follow up question. I ve been thinking about that and also hold myself accountable as I reflect on this past month. There are so many ways that we respond to our thankfulness: with a prayer, with actions to help others, with a renewed interest in a ministry, with creative ways to help someone with a need they have, etc. It will be interesting and good to hear (I d love to hear!) how you have or will respond. During November our parish did a lot! We worked, came together in worship, prayed and worked on the finances and build and design of our new Childcare and office building, made and served food at the Community Meal, attended diocesan convention, went out for youth group activities, traveled to Bellwether Farm, participated in Share the Blessings, and continued in the life of the church. November was a packed month! Among the many things we ve done this month, I had the opportunity to see some amazing things from youthe people of St. Peter s. Some of the ways I saw you respond to your thankfulness are worth mentioning because they are truly about community and looking out for and loving neighbor. When someone needed a ride either to or from church or a church event, I saw people team up and get that person a ride. I heard a concern for someone not having warm clothes with them and another person say I ll make sure to bring an extra coat, just in case they don t have one. I saw people extend out emotional care, by sending cards and calling those who were ill, recovering from something, or who had gone through a tough life event. I heard about several instances of your generosity with sharing money- you gave to our church, outreach partners, to the new building fund, and to programs so they can continue to extend as broad a reach as possible for all who want to participate! I saw a woman at Bellwether Farm be moved to get up from her seat, walk over to a group of people, and speak to them in sign language, a way of welcome and warmth. I could go on and it is so beautiful to see the ways of love expressed- these are the ways that Jesus taught. These examples are not only limited to what I saw in November, actually these things happen all the time! But they are what I observed this past month and wanted to share. I saw this prayer and want to share with you. It is from a book called Daily Prayer for All Seasons by Church Publishing. You have already responded to thankfulness with love, care for the other, and joy, let us continue! Holy One, we are too often blinded by trivial matters. Lord, may our attention be diverted now from these things, and may we become as little children, trusting and seeking with love to cross bridges that we have not crossed in the past. Amen. ~ Kelly

G. Keith Owen, II

Growing Together Our youth had a wonderful experience at the Bellwether Farm Dedication and time with Bishop Curry. Some phrases mentioned by Bishop Curry but worth mentioning again are: Christianity is caught not talked. He was sharing with our youth that your actions speak much louder than your words when it comes to living a Christian life. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John heard good news and passed it on. Bellwether Farm AKA The Root Factory. Bishop Curry mentioned we are Root Factory because we are planting seeds of faith in people that come to Bellwether and those seeds will grow strong roots of deep faith. Congratulations to Janice Carlson on winning First Place in our first ever St. Peter's Chili Cook-Off. Thank you to all 12 Chili Recipe Entries. Your secrets were enjoyed by a lot of Saint Peter's folks. I can't wait to host this again next year!!! The youth wanted to go horseback riding, so horseback riding we did NEIGHHHH! Thank you to our Diocese for a wonderful day.

Year-end giving reminders! To be tax deductible your charitable gift must go to a nonprofit organization such as your parish. To take a tax deduction for any cash contributions, no matter how small, you must have a canceled check, bank record or a receipt with the charity's name and donation amount. If you normally drop a $20 bill in the collection plate on Sunday you miss the opportunity to deduct $1,040 from your income taxes at year end. Instead, put the cash in a marked contribution envelope so the treasurer can credit the gift to you. Gift timing is very important. You can take the deduction for your contribution in the year that you make it. If you mail a check to your favorite charity on December 31, you can write it off on that year's tax return. When you make a donation on a credit card, you will claim the write-off in the year the charge is made, even if you don't pay the credit card bill until the following year. But a pledge to make a donation is different: Because it's only a promise to make a future donation, there is no deduction until you actually follow through. If you want to give appreciated property, such as stock held more than 12 months, be sure to transfer the stock directly to the parish. You will receive gift credit for the present value of the stock, regardless of how much you paid for it. If you sell the stock and then make the gift you will have to pay capital gains tax. Martha s Table Calling all cooks! Martha s Table is in need of some casseroles to put in the church freezer. If you are going to be doing some extra cooking this holiday season, please think about making extra batch for this important ministry. You do not have to join Martha's Table to make a casserole or two. This is just a one-time contribution. Please package in containers that don t need to be returned with information about the casserole and instructions with it. Please arrange to give the food to Lorna Jordan or Janis Carlson. We may be able to pick it up at your house or just bring it to church. There are special Martha s Table labels for the casseroles so you can request those ahead of time. In addition, we are also looking for people who wish to join this ministry where we deliver meals to parishioners in need for anything from hospitalization, out-patient surgery, sickness or other personal troubles. For questions contact Janis Carlson at jpctea@yahoo.com or Lorna Jordan at ljcookie1@gmail.com. 10 Music for Christmas, An Invitation (and a Choir update) This is a special invitation to all parishioners and extended family and friends. The 10:00 pm Christmas Eve Eucharist needs more volunteers to sit in the Choir to help us increase the ranks. Our Choral Scholars are on college break and home with their families, and some of our own people also travel at this season. It is a beautiful Christmas liturgy that is attended by many visitors and guests as well as by our own parish family. How much better it will be to welcome them with the inviting and encouraging sounds of the Choir as we sing so many familiar hymns and carols. Please see or contact Michael Miller to save your place today! Also, an update about our need for parishioners to volunteer some time and talent to sustain, and hopefully grow our Choir membership. After much writing and speaking and recruiting this past August and September, we joyfully added several new male voices to the tenor and bass sections. But the real and pressing need for additional sopranos and altos remains an urgent one. We have a total of seven female volunteers now singing, clearly not enough to survive their absences for family, travel or illness while still being able to keep the Choir singing on a weekly basis. I invite and urge you to continue to pray for this ministry of music, and to help us seek and encourage more people who will offer their gifts with the time they are able to give. I continue to believe this vibrant parish of St. Peter s can support an important visible and audible ministry that enlivens and energizes our worship and liturgy. Please help us make that possible. ~Michael Miller Drop-In Christmas Eve Play Drop-In for our Christmas Eve Play starring YOU, our Saint Peter s families! After great success... we will again be having an Instant play at the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Service. We had so much fun last year including whoever wanted to be in a real play. The idea behind the success of this play is everyone can participate. This means that family in from out-of-town, those visiting, those that haven t attended in a while, even those that have never stepped foot in this sanctuary -- can be an actor in our play. This play does not require weeks of rehearsals, simply just a little direction beforehand. We will work on casting the larger speaking roles during Sunday school early in the month. It is a blessing to make an annual Christmas production fit into our busy lives and -- most importantly for making JESUS the real star of Christmas! This play will require a lot of work with costumes and logistics throughout the month leading up to the Christmas Eve Service. Please consider helping and mark your calendars for meeting Sunday, December 17 th following coffee hour on the stage side of the undercroft.

Coffee Hour = Festive Twists Below are our host families for December & January. Just to remind us all how this works: 6 households will be assigned each Sunday. No one will have to do this more than a couple times each year. We ask that you plan to bring along with you on Sunday a plate of something to put out for coffee hour. Baking is no required, but is always welcomed! The items you bring can be as simple as a bag of goldfish crackers, fresh fruit such as grapes, baby carrots and dip, grapes, crackers & cheese, you name it. Just bring enough to share with maybe two dozen people, and please make sure it s ready to service(i.e., on a platter, sliced, whatever). All you have to do is leave the item in the kitchen before church. The verger will take care of putting things out and cleaning up (though you are always welcome to help!) Tom Newman will help out by getting the coffee started. THANK YOU, Tom! If you cannot cover your assigned Sunday, it would be most helpful if you call someone and switch Sundays.
