McIntosh, Priest Associate The Lections this Week Jeremiah Psalm 121 Galatians Matthew The Blessing of the Animals Sunday, 4 October, at Noon The tradition has come to be to have the Blessing of the Animals on the weekend closest to St Francis's Day, and this year St Francis's Day, 4 October, is a Sunday. The readings that we will hear in church will be those appointed for this feast, and we will again have the Blessing of the Animals on the south lawn on the rectory at Noon. All household pets are welcome, and we ask that they please be on leashes, in crates, because they will be unaccustomed to having so much company! Given the current weather forecast for Sunday, we shall have the Blessing of the Animals if at all possible, otherwise we shall postpone it. Please use your own judgment about bringing your pets! I think I am safe in saying that for years now the highlight of our Sundays has been...downton Abbey! Now although the final season is not due to reach our shores until January, we have been able to obtain a

And so may I present Downton Abbey, Season 6, Episode 1, where we find Lord Grantham at ease in his library: (Lord Grantham looks relaxed and content. LADY MARY enters with some urgency.) LADY MARY (Joanna Dumitrascu): Oh, Father, I'm so glad to find you alone. I've something very important to discuss with you. GRANTHAM (Ryan Foote): I expect it's about one of your 14 suitors. Can't it wait until after dinner, Mary? LADY MARY: Lady Mary. GRANTHAM: Sorry, Darling. Lady Mary. LADY MARY: No, Daddy, we must talk now. You know Granny is likely to pop in for dinner unexpectedly, as she always does, so she can hear all the latest gossip from downstairs. CARSON (Tom Sebring): (Entering and announcing) Lady Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, m'lord. DOWAGER (Sara Bouchard): (entering and pushing him out of the way) You don't need to announce me, Carson. They knowwho I am. (SHE sits on a chair.) CARSON: Yes, m'lady. I presume you shall be staying to dinner - again. DOWAGER: (pretending she didn't know) Oh dear, is it dinnertime? How silly of me. I must go. (SHE rises with difficulty.) LADY MARY: (aside, to GRANTHAM) I told you. GRANTHAM: But of course you must join us for dinner, Mother. (SHE sits again.) Can you set an extra place, Carson? CARSON: It's already set, m'lord.

4 GRANTHAM: Good man! CARSON: Thank you, m'lord. (He bows slightly and exits.) GRANTHAM: Mother, I was just about to tell Mary... LADY MARY: Lady Mary. GRANTHAM: Lady Mary. That I'm in a particularly good mood this evening. Things have worked out splendidly. Bates and Anna are out of prison. Carson and Mrs. Hughes have become engaged. Isobel Crawley is likely to marry Dicky Merton. Lady Edith has presented me with a new granddaughter. Prince Kuragin has found his Princess. (THE DOWAGER makes a face.) My angina has turned out to be just an ulcer. And dear Downton Abbey is secured, thank heavens. DOWAGER: Yes, what could possibly go wrong. CARSON: (reappearing with a letter on a silver platter)pardon, m'lord. GRANTHAM: What is it, Carson? (He takes the letter and looks at it.) Oh, a letter from America. (CARSON bows and exits as LORD GRANTHAM opens the letter and begins to read it.) DOWAGER: From one of Cora's revolting relatives, I presume, proposing another visit. One barely survived the last invasion. GRANTHAM: (still reading the letter) Good Lord! It can't be! LADY MARY: (with concern) What is it? GRANTHAM: You remember our ancient ancestor Phineas Grantham White, who threw up the Earldom for a life of penury in America... as an Anglican priest. DOWAGER: Ah, yes, the black sheep of the Crawley family.(aside) Which is saying something. GRANTHAM: Well, this letter concerns one of his descendents, The Reverend Roger B. White, who seems to have distinguished himself by 30 years service in a church in Kent.

5 LADY MARY: Kent! GRANTHAM: Not our Kent. A tiny village in a state called Connecticut. DOWAGER: Ah, Con-et-i-cut. Isn't that somewhere near Cal-i-forni-a? LADY MARY: (to DOWAGER) Granny! (to GRANTHAM)What sort of person is this Reverend White? GRANTHAM: Apparently he has a fondness for all things British. Listens for hours to Elgar, and offers only tea to drink at his dinner parties - the which is admirable, of course. Although it seems he drives a German automobile. DOWAGER: Oh, dear. LADY MARY: But what does this have to do with us? GRANTHAM: (in a stiff-upper-lip voice; this is dreadful news)in recognition of his 30 years of service to the church, His Majesty has granted him the sole hereditary right to Downton Abbey! He's to take possession immediately. LADY MARY: Oh, I feel faint. (GRANTHAM reaches to steady her.) CARSON: (entering with a silver tray with three brandy glasses) Stiff drink, m'lord? DOWAGER: (grabbing hers) Oh, goodie! (LADY MARY and GRANTHAM refuse their drinks, and CARSON stands aside.) GRANTHAM: But you haven't heard the worst of it. In order to attract American tourists, he is planning to open dear Downton to...to...oh, I can't say it. DOWAGER: Spit it out, Robert. GRANTHAM: He is planning to open our beloved Downton Abbey to a giant...

6 LADY MARY: Yes? GRANTHAM: year-long... DOWAGER: Yes? GRANTHAM: Tag Sale! (LADY MARY and CARSON react with horror; DOWAGER is still drinking her brandy, seemingly unperturbed. GRANTHAM storms out, followed by LADY MARY and CARSON. THE DOWAGER, struggling to her feet to follow them, stares straight at the audience and says, after laughter subsides.) DOWAGER: What's a tag sale? (SHE exits.) From the Treasurer A number of members of St. Andrew's have inquired over the past several years whether they could donate financial securities such as stock to the Parish. To enable such donations the Vestry recently authorized, and the Parish has established, a brokerage account to receive such transfers. As a matter of policy, the Parish promptly liquidates all securities received to avoid market risk. Members and friends of the Parish may now donate most types of securities including stocks, bonds, mutual fund shares and ETF units directly to St. Andrew's for the Operating Fund or any special purpose fund. Such contributions may provide an extra tax advantage to the donor if the security carries a capital gain. The broad stock and bond markets have risen dramatically in the past six years and many investors hold stocks, bonds and mutual funds with significant gains. A donation of securities usually allows the donor to deduct the full value of the security without incurring tax on the capital gain. Due to the transaction costs and attention required to process such donations, we suggest a minimum value of $1,000 per contribution. 7 Needed by The Kent Food Bank This month, The Kent Food Bank is especially in need of coffee, cold breakfast cereals, pasta sauces, and tuna fish. Please also remember that the Food Bank is grateful for pet foods as well. Donations may be dropped off in the basket in the narthex, to the left of the doors. Announcements Coffee &... Beginning on Sunday, 13 September, Coffee &... has resumed. There is a sign up sheet on the pass through into the kitchen for volunteers willing to provide light refreshments at the a.m. coffees. Please do offer to help! Knitting Group The knitters who take part in the Shawl Ministry at Sacred Heart Church are inviting members of St Andrew's Parish and also members of First Church to join them on the first and third Saturdays of the month, a.m. in the undercroft of Sacred Heart. Knitters in our parish are welcome to be in touch with the Rector for more information; or... just join in the conversation on 6 June at a.m.! Episcopal Visitation, with Confirmation and Reception into the Episcopal Church... is scheduled for the Last Sunday After the Epiphany, 7 February 2016, at a.m., and Bishop Douglas is to be our Visitor. The custom of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut is to Confirm candidates who are 16 years old or older, and those interested in Confirmation next winter are invited to let the

8 Rector or Fr David know. Those who have been already confirmed by a bishop in another tradition (Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, &c.) and who want to be Received into the Episcopal Church are also invited to make this known to the parish clergy. Diarmaid MacCulloch's Thomas Cranmer: A Life On 11 October we will continue our discussion of this prizewinning biography of the only Henrician Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury. Chapter 7 will be the topic, and we will meet in the Library at noon. Cloth-cover copies are still available through amazon.com. All are welcome! FISH ('Friends in Service Here') Needs Volunteers... as drivers and as telephone workers. FISH provides rides to those unable to drive so that they can keep medical appointments, shop for necessities, &c. Please call Sue Schullery ( ) for further information. Make a Difference in Someone's Life through LVG Literacy Volunteers on the Green offers instruction in reading, writing, and English as a Second Language to adults in Litchfield & northern Fairfield Counties. All tutoring is offered free of charge by volunteers who are trained by LVG. No prior teaching experience or knowledge of a foreign language is required to become a tutor, just a desire to help others improve their literacy skills. The Annual CROP Walk... to benefit the work of Church World Service among the hungry throughout the world will be on Sunday, 27 September, at the Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village. Members of churches throughout Litchfield County are invited to participate. 'New England Images' watercolors by Ned Reade...will be showcased at Mckinney and Doyle Fine Foods Café from 5 October through 4 January, Charles Colman Blvd., Pawling, New York. 9 Music in the Nave The Music Faculty of Kent School in recital Sunday, 25 October at 4.00 p.m. A reception in the parish house will follow the concert. The Pawling Concert Series Sons of Serendip Friday, 16 October at 8.00 p.m. in the Gardiner Theater, Trinity Pawling School A vocalist, a vocalist/'cellist, a pianist/guitarist, and a harpist who met in graduate school at Boston University will present a program of melodic contemporary American music. Admission: $30 adults, $15 students at the doors.
