Old Testament Reading: Exodus A reading from the book of Exodus. A man from the house of Levi went and married a Levite woman. The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a fine baby, she hid him for three months. When she could hide him no longer she got a papyrus basket for him, and plastered it with bitumen and pitch; she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds on the bank of the river. His sister stood at a distance, to see what would happen to him. The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her attendants walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to bring it. When she opened it, she saw the child. He was crying, and she took pity on him, This must be one of the Hebrews children, she said. Then his sister said to Pharaoh s daughter, Shall I go and get you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you? Pharaoh s daughter said to her, Yes. So the girl went and called the child s mother. Pharaoh s daughter said to her, Take this child and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages. So the woman took the child and nursed it. When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh s daughter, and she took him as her son. She named him Moses, because, she said, I drew him out of the water. Reader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Second Reading: Colossians A reading from the letter of Paul to the Colossians. As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Reader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. 3
4 Gradual Hymn at St James Father in heaven, Thank you for mothers, Loving and caring All the day long; Thank you for fathers, Working to feed us Mothers and fathers Loving and strong. Thank you for Mary, Blest among women, She who was chosen To mother your Son; Pattern of goodness, Trust and obedience, Help us to love you As she has done. Loving and caring, The Church is our Mother; Telling of Jesus, Telling of grace, Filled with his Spirit, Making us brothers, Joining his people In every place. Gospel Reading: Luke Reader: Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to N. All: Glory to you, O Lord. The child s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about Jesus. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too. Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, O Christ. Post Communion Prayer Loving God, as a mother feeds her children at the breast you feed us in this sacrament with the food and drink of eternal life: help us who have tasted your goodness to grow in grace within the household of faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord. A PRAYER FOR LENT 4 th Sunday in Lent: Mothering Sunday Lord Jesus Christ, who was born a child among us, loved by your mother Mary, help us to remember the pain of families torn apart by the sins of humanity; that we may seek to build a better world, where people may experience the love of your kingdom: through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. 4
5 PARKING ON THE COBBLES: Repairs taking place on Monday 1 st April 2019 Just to let people know that there will be work taking place to repair the patches of cobbles that are breaking up outside St James this Monday (1 st April 2019), before the damaged areas increase and become a serious problem. PARKING WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE FROM 8am ONWARDS TO ALLOW THIS WORK TO TAKE PLACE. To try and limit further damage, drivers are reminded that they are asked not to undertake turning manoeuvres on the cobbles, due to the damage that this causes. Many thanks. REFLOORING WORK AT ST JAMES The work to refloor the back of the Nave at St James in now complete, and the work has gone smoothly. Thanks to the craftsmanship of the stonemasons involved the job has been completed to the best quality, and ahead of schedule. Our thanks to Messengers for undertaking this work so well and with understanding for the continuing use of the building. STONEWORK ON THE SPIRE OF ST JAMES We have been informed that the replacement stones have now been carved. As soon as we are able to access the tower (which depends on the peregrine falcons), Stone Technical Services will come to fit these new stones and the tower will reopen for visitors. The exact date for this is in the hands of the falcons so watch for notices! GUILD OF ST JAMES The members of The Guild of St. James held their meeting on Tuesday 19th March to hear Dr Richard Gurnham talk about The People of the Panorama. Richard spoke eloquently and entertainingly about the lives of the people who lived around the church in the nineteenth century. His book of the same name is available from him or the Church Gift Shop. Next meeting will be held on Tuesday 21st May in Church House at 2.15 when Pat Wolley will talk about her Personal Journey through Embroidery. It promises to be a very interesting afternoon. There will be Bring & Buy table to raise money for the Children s Society. Please bring contributions. If you would like information to join us, please ring, Jeannie ( ) or Jane ( ). TRASH TO CASH Over the past 18 months we have managed to make just under 200 for the parish in selling your unwanted mobile phones, DVDs, CDs, computer games, ink cartridges and tablets. We are now collecting Lego pieces as well. Simply bag up your unwanted Lego pieces and leave at the collection points in the churches. The more we collect, the more money we can return to the Parish of Louth. If you have large amounts to donate please contact Peter Moore petermoore333@gmail.com / Please note that we cannot accept VHS tapes. RIDE AND STRIDE 2019 We are aiming to increase participation in the annual Ride and Stride event in September. Some churches in our Deanery make several hundred pounds for not much work. We are looking for people in the parishes to help advertise the event. The amount of time you need to commit is low. You can either become an attendee (a rider or a strider) or you can help advertise it to other church goers. Please contact Peter Moore petermoore333@gmail.com / Annual Meetings and Electoral Roll Renewal The renewal of the Electoral Roll of the Parish of Louth will take place on 15 th April 2019 Annual District Meetings will take place as follows: South Elkington at 7 30pm on Monday 1 st April Welton le Wold at on Tuesday 2 nd April Louth St James at 7 30pm on Thursday 4 th April St Michael s, Louth at 9 30am on Monday 8 th April Stewton at 7 30pm on Tuesday 9 th April The Annual Parochial Church Meeting will take place in Church House, Upgate at 7 30pm on Tuesday 30 th April. 5
