Pastor s Note Dear Ones, Recently, at the funeral of my Aunt Pearl, we looked at family photos while singing When We All Get to Heaven. The chorus of that hymn is: When we all get to heaven What a day of rejoicing that will be, When we all see Jesus, We ll sing and shout the victory! We must never forget that history ends in a wedding feast, yes, but also a victory celebration. The Lamb has triumphed. That triumph is worth singing about. Warmly, Steve Sunday Worship Services: 9 AM and 10:30 AM Children s Sunday School: 9 AM 9008 Quioccasin Road, Richmond, VA (804) mail@wepc.org website: wepc.org PCA pcanet.org 2 April 1, 2018

GOD THE FATHER CALLS US TO WORSHIP HIM Preparation for Worship & Communion THE WARS OF THE LORD Christ undertook a battle not rightly His; we share in a triumph not rightly ours. Murray Harris I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. Take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33 My Saviour shall subdue The powers of earth and hell; Behold, He maketh all things new, He doeth all things well. John Beaumont Second Sunday of Easter We are now in the season of Easter a celebration of Jesus victory over sin and death. Followers of Christ are called to a life of dying to sin, rising to the life of the Spirit, and participating in His reign as the Sovereign Lord. The Church now lives as those who are risen with Christ, living under His rule. Call to Worship Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle. He is my steadfast Love and my Fortress, my Stronghold and my Deliverer, my Shield and He in whom I take refuge. Psalm 144:1-2,5-6,9 The First Word Because we believe God initiates with sinners, we begin worship with His Word: His invitation to us to gather in His name. Bow your heavens, O Lord, and come down! Touch the mountains so that they smoke! Flash forth the lightning and scatter them; send out Your arrows and rout them! I will sing a new song to You, O God. Invocation wepc.org 3

New Testament Reading Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short! Revelation 12:7-12 Ministry of Prayer Offering wepc.org 5

GOD THE SON RENEWS US THROUGH HIS WORD & SACRAMENT Scripture Reading 10 And the people of Israel set out and camped in Oboth. 11 And they set out from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness that is opposite Moab, toward the sunrise. 12 From there they set out and camped in the Valley of Zered. 13 From there they set out and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that extends from the border of the Amorites, for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14 Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord, Numbers 21:10 35 Waheb in Suphah, and the valleys of the Arnon, 15 and the slope of the valleys that extends to the seat of Ar, and leans to the border of Moab. 16 And from there they continued to Beer; that is the well of which the Lord said to Moses, Gather the people together, so that I may give them water. 17 Then Israel sang this song: Spring up, O well! Sing to it! 18 the well that the princes made, that the nobles of the people dug, with the scepter and with their staffs. And from the wilderness they went on to Mattanah, 19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley lying in the region of Moab by the top of Pisgah that looks down on the desert. 21 Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, 22 Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into field or vineyard. We will not drink the water of a well. We will go by the King s Highway until we have passed through your territory. 23 But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. He gathered all his people together and went out against Israel to the wilderness and came to Jahaz and fought against Israel. 24 And Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as to the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strong. 25 And Israel took all these cities, and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon. 27 Therefore the ballad singers say, wepc.org 7

Come to Heshbon, let it be built; let the city of Sihon be established. 28 For fire came out from Heshbon, flame from the city of Sihon. It devoured Ar of Moab, and swallowed the heights of the Arnon. 29 Woe to you, O Moab! You are undone, O people of Chemosh! He has made his sons fugitives, and his daughters captives, to an Amorite king, Sihon. 30 So we overthrew them; Heshbon, as far as Dibon, perished; and we laid waste as far as Nophah; fire spread as far as Medeba. 31 Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites. 32 And Moses sent to spy out Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there. 33 Then they turned and went up by the way to Bashan. And Og the king of Bashan came out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 34 But the Lord said to Moses, Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people, and his land. And you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon. 35 So they defeated him and his sons and all his people, until he had no survivor left. And they possessed his land. Sermon A Worship Guide with sermon notes and recordings is posted each Sunday at wepc.org/sermons. 8 April 1, 2018

Preparation for the Lord s Supper Words of Institution The disciples prepared the Passover. And when it was evening, Jesus came with the twelve. And they were reclining at the table and as they were eating, He took bread. And after blessing it, He broke it and gave it to them, and said, Take; this is my body. And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. Mark 14:16-25 Confession of Sin O Lord, I bless You that the issue of the battle between Yourself and Satan has never been uncertain, and will end in victory. Calvary broke the dragon s head, and I contend with a vanquished foe, who with all his subtlety and strength has already been overcome. When I feel the serpent at my heel may I remember Him whose heel was bruised, but Who, when bruised, broke the devil s head. My soul with inward joy extols the Mighty Conqueror. Heal me of any wounds received in the great conflict; If I have sinned, if my faith has suffered damage, if my hope grows dim, if my love is not fervent, if some idol occupies my heart, if my soul sinks under pressure of the fight. O LORD, whose every promise is balm, every touch life, draw near to Your weary warrior, refresh me, that I may rise again to wage the strife, and never tire until my enemy is trodden down. Give me such fellowship with You that I may defy Satan, unbelief, the flesh, the world, with delight that comes not from a creature, and which a creature cannot mar. Give me a draught of the eternal fountain that lies in Your immutable, everlasting love and decree. Then shall I be strengthened as I rest in the power of Your might. based on The Valley of Vision, The Servant in Battle Confession & Encouragement Often we find that our hearts are worshipping something other than God. In confessing our sins, the Holy Spirit probes our hearts and minds and graciously shows us what we mistakenly believe will give us life. Jesus is good to lead us from sorrow over our sin to the sweetness of His grace. Silent Confession Words of Encouragement Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death that is, the devil and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. Hebrews 2:14-15 wepc.org 9

GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT TRANSFORMS US BY HIS GRACE Songs of Response to God s Grace COME TO THE FEAST Go to the highways and hedges, Go to the farthest of fields, Go and compel, the sick and the well, For our Father s house will be filled. Go to the streets of the city, Bring in the crippled and blind, All who would taste this banquet of grace Must come and waste no more time. Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. Luke 14:23 Jeff Lawson 2012 Jeff Lawson Music Used by permission. CCLI # Come to the Feast, come to the Table, The great and the least, the rich and the poor, Come to the Feast, come to the Table, Come and hunger no more. In the robe of the Lamb you ll be covered Dressed in His pure righteousness For all of your guilt, His blood it was spilt So, come, by your Father be blessed. DRAW MY SOUL TO THEE Draw my soul to Thee, O Lord; Make me love Thy precious Word! Bid me seek Thy smiling face; Only to be saved by grace. Dearest Jesus, bid me come; Let me find in Thyself, my Home; Thou the Refuge of my soul, Where I may my troubles roll. Draw me after you; let us run. Song of Solomon 1:4 Text: J. Adams, Gadsby Hymnal #389 (1838) Tune:: Brian T. Murphy & Benj Pocta (2005) 2006 Red Mountain Music Used by permission. CCLI #: Lord, Thy powerful work begun, Thou will never leave undone; Teach me to confide in Thee; Thy salvation s wholly free. wepc.org 11

Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest. Hebrews 4:11 Text: Samuel Stennett (1787) Tune: Christopher Miner (1997) Christopher Miner Music Used by permission. CCLI# ON JORDAN S STORMY BANKS 1. On Jordan s stormy banks I stand, And cast a wishful eye To Canaan s fair and happy land, Where my possessions lie. All o er those wide extended plains, Shines one eternal day; There God the Son forever reigns, And scatters night away. I am bound (I am bound), I am bound (I am bound), I am bound for promised land! 2. No chilling winds nor poisonous breath Can reach that healthful shore; Sickness, sorrow, pain and death, Are felt and feared no more. When shall I reach that happy place, And be forever blessed? When shall I see my Father s face, And in His bosom rest? 12 April 1, 2018

A - men. u U u U u Text: Thomas Ken (1709) Tune: OLD HUNDREDTH (Bourgeois, 1551) Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Psalm 150:6 What does doxology mean? It s a word derived from two Greek words meaning glory and word. A doxology, then, is a spoken word or song that ascribes glory to God. Today s doxology calls all of creation to praise God as the source of all blessing and acknowledges His Trinitarian (three-in-one) nature. The Last Word God always has the last word in our worship. For those who are in Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing. After the service, the Elders are available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you or for you, and to answer questions about the sermon or West End Presbyterian Church. Pastor Steve Shelby preached today s sermon. Pastor Kevin Greene led worship. Music was led by Pastor Kevin Greene, along with Sonya Smith, Jill Wiebe-King, Rick McMahon, Taylor Barnett, Tiffanie Chan, Donald Smith, Harrison Weippert, and Jason Weippert. The tapestry at the front of the sanctuary is the traditional liturgical color of white for this 50-day season of Easter. The tapestry will return to its many colors during the season of Pentecost. The piece is entitled Psalm 148, and was created by a team of WEPC artists. wepc.org 13
