O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord's Name be praised. Hymn 24 The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended Psalm 103 Sung by the choir to Anglican Chant Kellow J. Pye ( ) Praise the Lord, O my soul : and all that is within me praise his holy Name. Praise the Lord, O my soul : and forget not all his benefits; Who forgiveth all thy sin : and healeth all thine infirmities; Who saveth thy life from destruction : and crowneth thee with mercy and loving-kindness; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things : making thee young and lusty as an eagle. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgement : for all them that are oppressed with wrong. He shewed his ways unto Moses : his works unto the children of Israel. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy : long-suffering, and of great goodness. He will not alway be chiding : neither keepeth he his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins : nor rewarded us according to our wickednesses. For look how 3

high the heaven is in comparison of the earth : so great is his mercy also toward them that fear him. Look how wide also the east is from the west : so far hath he set our sins from us. Yea, like as a father pitieth his own children : even so is the Lord merciful unto them that fear him. For he knoweth whereof we are made : he remembereth that we are but dust. The days of man are but as grass : for he flourisheth as a flower of the field. For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone : and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth for ever and ever upon them that fear him : and his righteousness upon children's children; Even upon such as keep his covenant : and think upon his commandments to do them. The Lord hath prepared his seat in heaven : and his kingdom ruleth over all. O praise the Lord, ye angels of his, ye that excel in strength : ye that fulfil his commandment, and hearken unto the voice of his words. O praise the Lord, all ye his hosts : ye servants of his that do his pleasure. O speak good of the Lord, all ye works of his, in all places of his dominion : praise thou the Lord, O my soul. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. THE LESSONS First Lesson A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians (2:1-10). Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also. And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised: And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage: To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me: But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do. Here endeth the Lesson. The people stand 4

Magnificat Short Service Orlando Gibbons (c ) My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit rejoiceth in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me; and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel; as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever. Glory be Second Lesson A Reading from the Gospel of Mark (7:31-37). And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. Here endeth the Lesson. The people stand Nunc Dimittis Short Service Orlando Gibbons Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; to be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be Apostles Creed Sung by all on a monotone I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: 5

He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to Judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body: And the Life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers The choir sings the responses V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy Spirit. V. Let us pray. Richard Ayleward V. Lord, have mercy upon us. R. Christ, have mercy upon us. V. Lord, have mercy upon us. Lord s Prayer Sung by all on a monotone Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Suffrages Richard Ayleward V. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. R. And grant us thy salvation. V. O Lord, save the State. R. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. V. Endue thy Ministers with righteousness. R. And make thy chosen people joyful. V. O Lord, save thy people. R. And bless thine inheritance. V. Give peace in our time, O Lord. R. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. V. O God, make clean our hearts within us. R. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. 6

Collects Amen is sung by the choir. The Collect of the Day Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Collect for Peace O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. A Collect for Aid against Perils Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all Perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. Installation of Director of Music The officiant says Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, we are all baptized by the one Spirit into one Body, and given gifts for a variety of ministries for the common good. Our purpose is to install James Hopkins in the Name of God as the Director of Music of this parish. James, you have been called to a ministry in this parish. Will you, as long as you are engaged in this work, perform it with diligence? Candidate I will. Will you faithfully and reverently execute the duties of your ministry to the honor of God, and the benefit of the members of this parish. Candidate I will. Let us pray. O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven, be ever present with your servants who seek through music to perfect the praises offered by your people on earth; and grant them even now glimpses of your beauty, and make them worthy at length to behold it unveiled for evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In the Name of God and of this parish, I install you James Hopkins as Director of Music at Grace Church in Newark. 7

Receive this Graduale Novum as a symbol of your ministry among us. A collection will be taken during the Anthem. Anthem Ave Maria Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum; benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui. Amen. Robert Parsons (c ) Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Amen. Blessing The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen. BENEDICTION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT This popular devotion began in the thirteenth century. The love of devout hearts felt the need of expressing their faith in our Lord's sacramental presence and their adoration of him who comes to be with us in this lowly form. And out of this need grew the custom of taking the Sacred Host from the tabernacle at some time when Mass was not being offered, and holding a little service of adoration. A very old Christian tradition dictated that any people who might be in the church when the Blessed Sacrament was being reposed in the tabernacle, be blessed with the Sacrament, and this usual blessing naturally became a part of the service of adoration. Thus Benediction supplies a need of souls who have entered into the meaning of our Lord's real, objective presence in the Blessed Sacrament and, at the same time, guards against the danger of making devotion to the Blessed Sacrament a substitute for the Eucharistic action of offering to the Father. St. Augustine s Prayer Book (1967) Hymn 307 Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendor Exposition of the Sacrament Once the Sacrament has been brought to the High Altar, the people kneel with the priest. 11 Notes on the Music Evensong is a nickname for the office of Evening Prayer, a service first codified in the 1549 Book of Common Prayer. It is one of two services created to condense the monastic Liturgy of the Hours, with offices throughout the day, in to two, so that laypeople could also keep the daily office. A great musical tradition has grown around it, which sustains the great tradition of choral singing which can be found in England and in Anglican churches throughout the world. Although it has taken a number of forms over the years, with variations being introduced with each new Prayer Book, the order for Evening Prayer as set forth in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer is considered, by many, the standard, and is the order on which the service this evening is based. It draws heavily from the Monastic offices of Vespers and Compline and, at its core, contains readings from scripture, the recitation of a psalm, and the singing of two traditional Canticles taken directly from the Gospels: the Magnificat, or song of Mary, and the Nunc Dimittis, or Song of Simeon. The settings of the Canticles used this evening come from the Short Service by Orlando Gibbons, who lived in the late Tudor and early Jacobean eras in England. Although many associate Evensong with lavish settings for choir and organ written in the 20 th century, this comparatively restrained 4 voice a capella setting is no less grand, from its triumphant Magnificat to the more introspective Nunc Dimittis. Another distinctive part of Evensong is the versicles and responses used. Many composers have written choral settings of the responses (the versicles being intoned by the Officiant), which are all fascinating examples of music in extreme miniature. Each response is only a few measures long, and yet composers have managed to place their own unique voice on them. This 4 voice setting by Richard Ayleward is among the best known. The Ave Maria, one of the best known prayers in the Christian faith, has been set by many composers throughout the ages. The text comes, partially, from the Gospel according to St. Luke, but the petition beginning with Sancta Maria was added at some point between the 13 th and 15 th centuries, codified with the Roman Breviary of Robert Parsons, a 16 th - Century English composer about whom very little is known, wrote one of the most sublime settings of the work, a polyphonic setting for 5 voices. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament customarily includes two hymns during the adoration of the Sacrament: O Salutaris Hostia, and Tantum Ergo. The latter is actually the final two verses of the Pange lingua, whose text was written by Thomas Aquinas. Duruflé s setting of it, one of his Quatre Motets (four motets), is little more than a harmonization of the most 11

commonly used chant for the hymn. But, as you will hear, that does not detract from its musical worth at all. The organ music heard today was, with the exception of the German Baroque Praeludium in G by Bruhns, all written in the 1930 s. Duruflé s Suite, opus 5, perhaps the best of the small handful of pieces he wrote for the organ, contains three movements, two of which will be heard this evening. The Prélude is in two sections. The first repeats a fairly long theme, building it each time, until it reaches full organ and quiets down to a beautiful recititavo section. The tranquil, mysterious Sicilienne is based on the lilting Siciliano baroque dance form. The third movement of the Suite, the fiery Toccata, will not be heard this evening. Olivier Messiaen s Dieu parmi nous (God among us) is the final movement of his monumental organ work, La Nativité du Seigneur (the Nativity of our Lord), which is a series of 9 pieces exploring the religious themes of the Christmas season. Messiaen was a devout Catholic and a brilliant, and original, musical mind. His compositional language is unique, and he is increasingly recognized among the great composers of the 20 th Century. This piece begins with a terrifying downward figure, which re-occurs throughout. It culminates in an ecstatic toccata, expressing the joy of the incarnation and manifestation of Jesus. 950 Broad Street Newark, NJ The Rev. Dr. J. Brent Bates, Rector James M.
