1 CHURCH OF ST. THOMAS MORE GLENDALE, AZ June 7, 2015 Liturgy A Transformative Meal Jesus focused on food. The Gospels are filled with Jesus sharing meals, quite often with the wrong people. His teaching and parables are filled with allusions to food, from tiny mustard seeds to great banquet feasts. Meals in particular were important to Jesus and today we hear Mark s version of a very special meal. We call it the Last Supper, but for Jesus and the disciples, it is the Passover meal; a meal centered around the sacrifice of a lamb and the Jewish notion of passing over from death to life. The sacrifice of the lamb was a sign of the covenant between God and the Jewish people. Welcome to the Parish Prayer of St. Thomas More: Give us, good Lord, the grace to work for the things we pray for. Our warmest welcome to all who worship with our parish family, whether long time registered or newly arrived in the parish. For your convenience a drop box is located outside the Parish Office front doors if you wish to leave paperwork when the office is closed. Please do not leave checks or cash. In the midst of this meal, Jesus suddenly interrupts the Passover ritual and does something extraordinary. He gives bread to his disciples, telling them to Take it; this is my body. Then he offers them a cup, and they all drank from it. While they are drinking, Jesus says This is my blood of the covenant. In essence, Jesus is saying This is my life. He has offered his body, his blood, which he added is of the covenant. He is now the Passover lamb, offered as sacrifice. We partake of Christ s Body and Blood we when gather on the Lord's Day. St. Augustine in the 4th Century taught us that in receiving the Eucharist, you become what you receive." So when we consume the host, the Eucharistic bread that is offered to us as the Body of Christ, we become the Body of Christ, living and active in the world today. Likewise, when we consume the Blood of Christ we become the Blood of Christ that flows out in love to others. The Eucharistic Bread tells us what we are to become, the Eucharistic Cup tells us how we are to live. St. Augustine continues: "Remember, you are the body of Christ and its members. If, then, you are the body of Christ and its members, it is your own mystery that you celebrate, your own mystery that is placed on the Lord's table. It is to what you are that you answer amen. Therefore, be a member of the body of Christ so that your amen will be true." (Sermon 272) Just as the Passover meal recalled in Mark s Gospel today was a transformative meal, our sacrificial meal shared today, is transformative as well. This meal transforms us to be the Body of Christ for the world. 2 HUNGRY? THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Adult Formation It is so important on this feast of bread and wine, that we ask those who are hungry to help us understand the meaning of the eucharist, so central to us as a people. Catherine Doherty used to pray: Lord, give bread to the hungry and hunger for you to those who have bread. It is not an overstatement to say that feeding the hungry and hunger for the bread of life are prerequisites for participation in the eucharist for those of us who have bread. The significance of Mark s account of the Last Supper is the choice of words which connects this event to other events of the feeding of the great crowd. Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to his disciples. Jesus sacrificial action of the gift of himself on the cross, remembered at every celebration of the eucharist, is closely connected to Jesus act of feeding the great crowd. Far from being a ritual to observe or a dogma to hold, the eucharist is an act of God s love in Christ freely given to hungry people who look longingly for someone to feed them. Through the repeated use of this account of Jesus Passover in the community of worship, Mark s followers remembered the action of Jesus and celebrated the continued effects of this Supper. We, too, are invited by this feast and at every eucharist we celebrate with Christ our own reality of dying and rising. We are not observers who look at the event that has happened in the past. We are to be participants, ready to offer ourselves with Jesus by integrating our lives with what we proclaim together in our worship. The Body of Christ which is broken and shared among us, The Blood of Christ poured out for all, is what we are called to be for one another. We are expected to break and share the bread of life and to pour out our life s blood for those who look longingly to us for nourishment. In the spirit of Catherine s prayer, we who have bread are to recognize our own great need to be fed. I hope we never forget the children of Syria, Africa, those in refugee camps, and on our city streets to see them as a constant reminder that I am called through the eucharist to feed them and others like them; a reminder, too, that I need to experience hunger before I can truly celebrate eucharist. As we all make the procession to take and drink the Body and Blood of Christ, may every step lead us to depths of our own dying and rising celebrated in every eucharist as well as feeding our sisters and brothers. Take advantage of this opportunity and let us do the heavy work. Instead of lugging water to Mass, drop it off curbside! Fr. Tom Doyle is reaching out to the community for a special donation. André House is in need of a reliable used vehicle. The vehicle would be used for transportation of food between facilities, taking clients to medical appointments and general use of the staff to meet daily needs of André House clients and the facilities. If you can help or would like more information, please contact Fr. Tom at or REFUGEE MINISTRY June 20 is World Refugee Day. To raise awareness of the plight and suffering of refugees, St. Thomas More Refugee Ministry will hand out information about Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Ministry next weekend. In addition, volunteers will hand out a list of needed items so that Welcome Baskets can be made for newly arriving refugee families. Please be sure to stop by the table to get your list, and donated items may be dropped off the weekend of June 20 and 21. A training session will be held Tuesday, June 30, 6:00 p.m. in the modular building for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer. Fr. Barron will explain the symbolism of each part of the Mass in this video filmed in churches all over the world, and will take us on a journey to be remembered.
