1 CHURCH OF ST. THOMAS MORE GLENDALE, AZ OCTOBER 26, 2014 Why does? Liturgy This week - a couple questions about what happens during the preparation of the gifts. Welcome to the Parish Prayer of St. Thomas More: Give us, good Lord, the grace to work for the things we pray for. "Why does the deacon mix water in with the wine when he's pouring the cups?" According to Nick Wagner, former editor of "Ministry and Liturgy" magazine, this practice comes from the early days of the liturgy in the Mediterranean area. It was the custom at the time to dilute strong wine so that it would not be too strong for everyone to drink. The cultural practice simply carried over into the liturgy with little thought or meaning. Over time, people began to ascribe a meaning to the action, and a common misunderstanding arose: that the mingling of water with the wine represented the water and blood that flowed from the side of Christ during his crucifixion. You'll recall the passage in the Passion according to John that we hear on Good Friday: "One soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out." (John 19: 34) As the deacon pours the water into the wine, he says quietly: "By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity." "Why does the priest wash his hands at the end of the preparation of the gifts?" Because they're dirty. As simple as that sounds, that may be where the practice began. The origin of this ritual is unclear, but it comes from the early church, when foods other than bread and wine were brought forward. These food gifts were to be shared with the poor, just as the bread and wine are shared after being consecrated as the Body and Blood of Christ. In addition, the gifts were incensed, as they sometimes are today. So after handling the food and the incense, the priest s hands might have been dirty. However, early cultures did not understand germs the way we do, and the hand washing may have been a symbolic gesture of inner cleansing. As the priest says quietly during this action: Lord, wash away my iniquity; cleanse me from my sin. Steve Raml Director of Liturgy & Music Our warmest welcome to all who worship with our parish family, whether long time registered or newly arrived in the parish. If you are not registered, please stop by the Parish Office and pick up a registration form. 2 Adult Formation Tasting and Touching Eternity in Our Human Loves THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Holy Day Mass Saturday, November 1 8:30 a.m. Last week I had an experience of loving God and neighbor in an extraordinary way. I spent three days at a Conference on Intergenerational Learning with leaders from South Africa, Perth Australia, Canada and the United States. We came from 17 different Christian Traditions of Catholics, Evangelical Lutherans, Episcopal, Methodist, Baptist, United Church of Christ, Nondenominational and the list goes on Most churches and faith communities segment their ministries by age and generation. In some communities, people may never interact with those of other ages. This is not the biblical tradition nor the majority of history from our Jewish roots. The churches were multigenerational and intergenerational with the whole community together as one family and people of all ages worshiping and learning from one another to be disciples to change the world. The conference gave a vision to intergenerational discipleship. Pharisees in today s gospel feel above the community. They question Jesus as though he does not know the Law. They wanted a debate about the 614 commandments of the law: which were great and which were lesser. Jesus response is no surprise. He identified two the love of God and the love of neighbor. Jesus proclaimed these two as the principle of interpretation for the entire law, but also said that the love of neighbor is like the love of God. This is a paradigm shift: It is not that the command to love our neighbor as ourselves is the proof of our love of God, nor is it similar to love of God. To love God and neighbor as ourselves is inseparable. There is no love of God that is not at the same time the love of one s self and one s neighbor! What would it mean if we actually believed that the love offered us in the ordinary exchanges of life were one with the love that bonds Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit. What would it mean? What it meant for me last week and which I carry deep within me never to let go that for three days one hundred leaders from across the world and denominations held each other in love. It was a taste and touch of eternity in human love. Mary Ann Ronan Have Your Blood Pressure Checked After All Masses Sunday, October 26 THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT!!! The collection last weekend for the outreach ministries supported by St. Thomas More totaled $25,470. In addition to the amount collected, the parish is donating $20,000. 4 STEPHEN MINISTRY Pastoral Care Sometimes it takes more than a parka or a blanket to keep another person warm. Sometimes it takes the presence of a caring Christian friend. Stephen Ministers share the warmth of God s love with those who need it most: the lonely, the depressed, the grieving. Is God calling you to reach out to those who are hurting? Our Stephen Ministry training classes will begin in January. Please consider joining us at an information night on November 13 at 6:30 p.m. For more information or to get an application, contact Linda in the Parish Office or lmcdowell@stmglendale.org. SEASONS OF SPIRITUALITY What s in a Name? Tuesday, November 4, 9:15 a.m. What to call older adults? Boomers don t like to be called seniors. Even seniors don t like their own name! I am not old. Maybe it is changing our perception of what it means to be seniors. Pope Francis offers a new perspective through his own life and energy as well as talking about the dignity and respect we give to each other in this journey called life. The core issue is that there are negative attitudes about aging. We need a vision for growing older. It is an opportunity to have the rest of life be richer and more rewarding than we can ever imagine. Seasons of Spirituality at St. Thomas More offers SPIRITUAL VITALITY to discover the joy, rewards, and humor in all seasons of life. Join us on the first Tuesday of every month. The topic for November: Seek Love Everywhere. Come to discover how red/ pink give our very cells the message of live in fear or live in love.
