ELIMINATION OF THE 7:00 PM SUNDAY MASS Because of continually dwindling attendance, it has become necessary to cancel the 7:00 pm Sunday Mass, beginning Sunday, March 9 th. Since it was established in 1968, this Mass was very well attended, many times with a full church. However, the past year we ve noticed a precipitous drop in attendance and only a handful of people attend. With such few numbers attending that Mass, it is not cost effective for us to continue it. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes. It will be celebrated for the last time on Sunday, March 2 nd. If you have scheduled a Memorial Mass for a 7:00 p.m. Mass after March 2nd please contact the parish office at to reschedule. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Eucharistic Adoration Friday s during Lent time to be determined. We would like to offer this opportunity to parishioners if there is enough interest. If you are interested please me at joan_dargenis@yahoo.com or call the office at Stop in and spend sometime with Jesus in a quiet atmosphere. We all need moments of peace. "Could you not watch one hour with Me?" Jesus waits for us in the Blessed Sacrament. He waits for our little Acts of faith, adoration, love, thanksgiving, repentance, reparation and charity that we can offer Him as we contemplate -- His Divine Majesty -- in the Blessed Sacrament. We are looking for volunteers to sit and for one hour on Friday s during Lent. If you can devote one hour of your time on any or every Friday during Lent, please let me know. WORLD MARRIAGE DAY 2014 Following are a few names that were mistakenly omitted from the World Marriage Day 2014 list that was published in the bulletin last week: Patsy and Lucy Rinaldi married 67 years this year. Paul and Elaine David married for 46 years. Spring 40 Days for Life Action March 5-April 14 More information to follow.

4 OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL - ST. ANN PARISH MARCH 2, 2014 February 27, 2014 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, A LETTER FROM BISHOP McMANUS Catholics in Latin America and the Caribbean face many challenges when it comes to sharing their faith; yet the light always shines through and hope arises. For example, in the Diocese of San Miguel, El Salvador, the youth of Holy Family Parish are at high risk for violence and gang activity. In response, the parish designed a youth enrichment and leadership program to address young people s need for critical-thinking skills and values education. The parish hopes to help the youth living in these high-vulnerability areas create a culture of solidarity and peace within their neighborhoods. The parish currently engages a group of 75 young adults. They will become youth leaders to spread the gospel message in their neighborhoods and break the cycle of violence. In Ecuador, the Diocese of Loja organized a three-day formation program for their catechists, many of whom work in isolated areas. More than 2,500 catechists gathered from around the diocese to participate in training sessions on rural ministry, bible instruction, and other areas of catechesis. One of the participants, Andrea, said that the experience was informative and enriching and that the catechists were able to meet each other and share their diverse experiences. She said that the sessions fortified her spirit so that she can go back to her ministry in the parish and better serve the people in the diocese. The Collection for the Church in Latin America, through projects like these youth and young adult ministry programs, as well as catechesis programs, empowers the faithful of Latin America to deepen their faith and share it with each other and the world. A significant portion of this collection is also used to assist in the ongoing efforts of our own Diocesan Hispanic Ministry, which serves the large number of Hispanic and Latino Catholics who are now in the Diocese of Worcester. It is gratifying to see the life of faith flourishing in these parish communities as their faith life enriches us all. I encourage you to respond to this year s theme to Share your Faith by supporting the special Collection for the Church in Latin America in our parishes on March 8 and 9. Please be assured of my appreciation for your generous response to this collection. With every prayerful best wish, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester THE FEAST OF SAINT JOSEPH Our traditional celebration of the Feast of Saint Joseph, Husband of Mary, is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 19. Our feast parish celebration honors Rosemary Zamarro who loved our parish and the Italian culture. Many years ago Rosemary shared with us her mother s recipe for linguine and baccala. Dinner will be prepared by Chef Elizabeth Cariglia. Dessert will be the traditional zeppole (also called sfinge di San Giuseppe in Southern Italy and Sicily) soft, flaky pastries filled with custard and dusted with powdered sugar.our celebration will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the celebration of a Mass in honor of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary. Immediately following the Mass, we will go to the Parish center for dinner. It is the tradition that after a severe drought and famine in Sicily, the people prayed to St. Joseph and promise that if they made it through this difficult time, they would make a devotion to St. Joseph to set up a table each year and invite those in need to come to the table. In keeping with this tradition we ask everyone to bring non-perishable food for the poor who come to our food pantry. The cost of the meal is still $ For tickets or further information, please call the parish office or Joan D Argenis at , address: joan_dargenis@yahoo.com

5 THE EIGHTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME MARCH 2, 2014 LENT~SCRUTINIES & RCIA Lent is a period reflection, repentance and renewal in preparation for the celebration of the Pascal Mystery (Easter). This is a period of more intense spiritual preparation, consisting of a more interior reflection and is intended to purify our minds and hearts. Our RCIA catechumen and candidate will be entering this period in a special way as well. They have been receiving catechetical instruction since October and are now entering this period of purification and enlightenment. This period is intended to purify their hearts and minds with a deeper knowledge of Christ the Savior, as we all are called to do during the season of Lent. On the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent, our parish will be celebrating certain rites a series of Scrutinies. The celebration of these rites brings about the process of purification and enlightenment and extends it over the course of the entire Lenten season. The Scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. During this season, all of us are called to take part and scrutinize our own lives--to allow God to seek, uncover and then heal all that is weak and separates us from Him. Our Triune God then will bring out and strengthen all that is good in us. We invite you to take part in and support our catechumen, Natalie Schinco and our candidate, Jarisca Vargas in the celebration of the scrutinies during the 11:30 am Mass and continue to pray for them and each other during this Lenten season.
