Anointing of the Sick Anyone scheduled to enter the hospital or is sick should be anointed. The anointing of the sick is held every Saturday after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Just ask the Priest and he will pray with you and administer the Sacrament of the Sick. Parish Membership Every parishioner should be formally registered with the parish. Likewise, parishioners are encouraged to use the Sunday collection envelopes. We invite you to register at the Rectory Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. or complete a registration form, found in Church, and drop off at the Rectory. Vocations Are you being called to the Priesthood or Religious Life? Speak with a Priest or Religious or contact the Vocation Office at or vocations@diobrook.org. Baptisms Usually, on the second Sunday of the month at 12:15 p.m. Parents wishing to have their child baptized must attend a class prior to the Baptism. Classes are usually held the first Saturday of the month at 10:30 a.m.. Please call the Rectory to register. Marriages Arrangements must be made with the Priest at least 6 months prior to the wedding. One party should be a parishioner. For information on pre-cana, visit Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Instructions for non-catholic adults interested in becoming Catholics are held during the year. Instructions for Catholics who have not received the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation are also given. Gospel Atop a high mountain, Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, and John. (Matthew 17:1-9). Transfiguration Manifestation It may seem odd to hear the Gospel of the Transfiguration of Jesus during Lent. Wouldn t it fit better after Easter? An answer is found a few verses after our Gospel selection. Jesus tells the disciples that he will suffer (Matthew 17:12). The vision of Jesus glory shared by Peter, James, and John was meant to help them not to become discouraged by Jesus death on the cross. Some of the details in the Gospel can help us understand how Lent leads to Easter. First, we hear about Jesus appearance, that his face shone like the sun (Matthew 17:2). If the disciples didn t believe that Jesus was the Son of God before, they surely did now. For us this can be a reminder that God is with us during this season of Lent, helping our faith to grow. Next, the three disciples see Moses and Elijah, symbols of the Old Testament. Peter wants them to stay, but the voice of God interrupts and tells them that now they should listen to Jesus. The Gospel tells us to keep our eyes on Jesus throughout Lent. Do I grumble about Lent, seeing it is as another set of laws to be obeyed? Perhaps I m forgetting that Lent is not about how much I do for God, but a time to reflect on what God has done for me. The last line of the Gospel has Jesus telling the three not to tell anyone about their vision until after his resurrection. Maybe the disciples were tempted to brag that they were better than the other followers of Jesus. This reminds us that the sacrifices of Lent don t just make us look holy; they lead us to the new life of Easter. Tom Schmidt, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Our Lenten Prayer Dear Lord, During this holy season of Lent, remind us these are the days of salvation. Help us to make it through our difficulties, and the trials and temptations of everyday life. Help keep us from evil and help us avoid the pain and hurt sin causes. Remind us to be prayerful and to reflect upon the great sacrifice Jesus made for each one of us. Amen
