1 Saint Francis in the Valley Episcopal Church Green Valley, Arizona The Rev. Daniel J. Messier, Rector The Rev. Pamela W. Hyde, Assistant Rector The Twenty-Third Sunday After Pentecost 28 October 2018 Rite Two, Eucharistic Prayer A at 8 and 10 am Organ Prelude César Franck, Prelude in B Minor Opening Hymn 410 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven Opening Sentences Prayer Book 355 Gloria in excelsis Deo Hymnal S280 The Collect of the Day Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Word of God The First Reading Our First Reading was originally composed as a vision of hope, full of joy, for the restoration of the northern tribes of Israel. A Reading from the Book of the prophet Jeremiah (31:7-9). Thus says the Lord: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, Save, O Lord, your people, the remnant of Israel. See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. The Psalm (126) (Please respond following the asterisk.) 1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, * then were we like those who dream. 2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, * and our tongue with shouts of joy. 3 Then they said among the nations, * The Lord has done great things for them. 4 The Lord has done great things for us, * and we are glad indeed. 5 Restore our fortunes, O Lord, * like the watercourses of the Negev. 6 Those who sowed with tears * will reap with songs of joy. 7 Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, * will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves. The Second Reading In our Second Reading the author demonstrates how Jesus is our perfect and everlasting high priest. A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews (7:23-28). The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; but Jesus holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently he is able for all time to save those who

2 approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn 671 Amazing grace! how sweet the sound The Gospel: Mark 10:46-52 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, Son of David, have mercy on me! Jesus stood still and said, Call him here. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Take heart; get up, he is calling you. So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man said to him, My teacher, let me see again. Jesus said to him, Go; your faith has made you well. Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Pamela W. Hyde The Nicene Creed Prayer Book 358 Prayers of the People Prayer Book 389 Confession of Sin Prayer Book 360 Absolution and Peace Prayer Book 360 Announcements The Offertory Herbert Howells, My eyes for beauty pine, My soul for Goddës grace, No other care nor hope is mine, To heaven I turn my face. One splendor thence is shed from all the stars above: Tis named when God s name is said, Tis Love, tis heavenly Love. And every gentle heart that burns with true desire, Is lit from eyes that mirror part of that celestial fire. Words by Robert Bridges ( ) The Offertory Sentence All things come of thee, O Lord, and of thine own have we given thee. The Great Thanksgiving Prayer Book 361 Sanctus & Benedictus Hymnal S125 The Lord s Prayer Prayer Book 364 The Breaking of the Bread Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Agnus Dei Hymnal S161 Communion of the People On Receiving Communion: You may stand or kneel at the rail to receive the Sacrament. (If you would like a gluten-free wafer, please let one of the clergy know.) If you do not wish to receive Communion you are invited to come forward for a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. Members of the Daughters of the King will be at the Chapel rail at both services to administer prayers for healing and thanksgiving. Please go to the Chapel rail after your Communion. 2

3 Prayer for the Sending Forth of Eucharistic Visitors (to be said by all) In the name of this congregation we send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that those to whom you go may share with us in the Communion of Christ s body and blood. We, who are many, are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. Post-Communion Prayer Prayer Book 365 The Blessing Closing Hymn 665 All my hope on God is founded The Dismissal Organ Postlude Sortie in D Today s Gospel César Franck Today s Gospel reading is the story of the new vision of blind Bartimaeus. The evangelist has carefully prepared for this story by illustrating the inability of the religious officials to perceive who Jesus is and by describing the shortsightedness of the disciples. Now, with nothing but his great hope, this blind beggar calls out to Jesus. He uses the only title of honor he can think of: Son of David dangerous words in the present political climate. But Jesus stops on his own profound journey, and Bartimaeus is healed through his faith. Then, as a model of a disciple who has received healing as a gift, he follows Jesus on the way. 1 Words and Music Poet Robert Bridges and composer Herbert Howells are great names in Anglican liturgical art. Bridges served as Britain s poet laureate from 1913 to 1930 and Howells chiefly through his many stunningly beautiful settings of the Evening Canticles (Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, the canticles sung at Evensong) is justly revered as the twentieth century s greatest composer of Anglican church music. The work of both is characterized by a reaching back in time to ancient roots and, as a result, by a profound respect for the great traditions of both poetry and music. At 10 o clock this morning the choir will sing Howells setting of Bridges poem My eyes for beauty pine and, at the conclusion of the service, we will all sing Howells great tune Michael, set to Bridges All my hope on God is founded. (Howells tune is named for his son Michael who died at age 8.) The anthem and hymn are both examples of the perfect marriage of words and music as well as what can be wrought anew from the refining fires of tradition. The hymn will be unfamiliar although we have sung it here at St. Francis so do your best and, remember, every familiar hymn was once unfamiliar. We extend a warm welcome to our guests and visitors and we are delighted to have you worship with us. Our Communion Table is open to all baptized Christians. Please join us for refreshments in the Parish Hall after the service, and please complete the Visitor s Card found in the pew racks and place it in an Offering Basket or hand it to an Usher or Greeter after the service. 3

Join us on Monday mornings at 9:30 in the Vulliamy Room. Wednesday Evening Weekly Study Rev. Pam will begin her Wednesday Evening Weekly Study on Wednesday, November 7 at 6 pm in the Conference Room. This winter we will do an in-depth study of the Lord s Prayer undoubtedly the most beloved and best-known prayer in the Western world. We ll examine the prayer line by line, and open up meaning in this fundamental prayer of our worship that can transform the way we pray it. Rev. Pam will be using two books in the class that she highly recommends

Humanitarian Border Assistance The backlog of migrants at the border waiting for asylum hearings continues, and Cruzando Fronteras, our diocesan migration/border ministry, still needs our help. The folks with Cruzando Fronteras are very grateful for all that has been contributed to date and continue to seek donations of items for babies and children, such as diapers, formula, clothing and hygiene items (wipes, etc.), as well as financial assistance. There is a box for items in the Parish Hall, and checks can be made payable to St. Francis with Cruzando Fronteras in the memo line. Second Half of Life Spirituality On Saturday, November 3, we will be welcoming the Rev. Ann Johnson and Dr. Linda Williams, the conveners of the Diocesan Second Half of Life Spirituality Ministry, to St. Francis. This ministry focuses on the spiritual aspects of the journey into and through the retirement phase of life, both for those who are at that point in life and for their family members and caregivers. The Rev. Johnson and Dr. Williams will introduce this ministry and discuss stage- and age-related opportunities for enriching the second half of life, as well as how we, as a community of faith, can share the journey together. The presentation and discussion will be from 9:30 to 11:30 am, followed by lunch. If you are interested, please call ( ) or stop by the Parish Office to sign up to attend. Refugee Ministry The Refugee Ministry Group will meet on Wednesday, October 31, at 3 pm in

8 the Conference Room. This will be our first meeting of the fall, and Rev. Pam will lead us in a discussion to help us envision where this ministry is going. We welcome everyone who would like to hear about our past work with immigrant aid on our border and with refugee resettlement. We encourage everyone to come who would like to know how they can get involved. More from Refugee Ministry Fatemeh, now home with her family following her operation, is doing well with a walker and working closely with her therapist. For awhile she ll have a nurse visit on a regular basis. She looks wonderful, if still in pain, though each day is slowly bringing her life back into focus. Seekers Discussion Group The next series of discussions will be about Ret. Bishop John S. Spong s latest last book titled Unbelieveable. These discussions will begin either November 1 or 8, depending on when we finish current discussions. So get the book, read through the front matter and chapter one. We meet each Thursday in the Conference Room at 12:30 pm until 1:50 pm. Need a ride to a Parish Event? Our Men s Group is offering rides to those in need of transportation to Parish events.
