1 Saint Francis in the Valley Episcopal Church Green Valley, Arizona The Rev. Daniel J. Messier, Rector The Rev. Pamela W. Hyde, Assistant Rector The Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost 5 August 2018 Rite Two, Eucharistic Prayer D at 8 and 10 am Organ Prelude César Franck, Panis Angelicus (Bread of Angels) Opening Hymn 11 Awake, my soul, and with the sun Opening Sentences Prayer Book 355 Gloria in excelsis Deo Hymnal S280 The Collect of the Day Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Word of God The First Reading In our First Reading we hear the story of God s feeding of the people in the wilderness. A Reading from the Book of Exodus (16:2-4, 9-15). The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger. Then the Lord said to Moses, I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. Then Moses said to Aaron, Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites, Draw near to the Lord, for he has heard your complaining. And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. The Lord spoke to Moses and said, I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God. In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, What is it? For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat. Lector: The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God. The Psalm (78:23-29) (Please respond following the asterisk.) 23 So he commanded the clouds above * and opened the doors of heaven. 24 He rained down manna upon them to eat * and gave them grain from heaven. 25 So mortals ate the bread of angels; * he provided for them food enough. 26 He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens * and led out the south wind by his might.

2 27 He rained down flesh upon them like dust * and winged birds like the sand of the sea. 28 He let it fall in the midst of their camp * and round about their dwellings. 29 So they ate and were well filled, * for he gave them what they craved. The Second Reading In our Second Reading the new Christians in Ephesus are urged to lead lives of patient love, using their various gifts in the unity of the Spirit, while growing toward their maturity in Christ. A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians (4:1-16). I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ s gift. Therefore it is said, When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people. (When it says, He ascended, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body s growth in building itself up in love. Lector: The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn 309 O Food to pilgrims given The Gospel: John 6:24-35 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. The next day, when the people who remained after the feeding of the five thousand saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here? Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal. Then they said to him, What must we do to perform the works of God? Jesus answered them, This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent. So they said to him, What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that 2

3 which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. They said to him, Sir, give us this bread always. Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Pamela W. The Great Thanksgiving Prayer Book 372 Sanctus & Benedictus Hymnal S125 The Lord s Prayer Prayer Book 364 The Breaking of the Bread Prayer Book 364 Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Agnus Dei Hymnal S161 Communion of the People On Receiving Communion: You may stand or kneel at the rail to receive the Sacrament. (If you would like a gluten-free wafer, please let one of the clergy know.) If you do not wish to receive Communion you are invited to come forward for a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. Members of the Daughters of the King will be at the Chapel rail at both services to administer prayers for healing and thanksgiving. Please go to the Chapel rail after your Communion. Prayer for the Sending Forth of Eucharistic Visitors (to be said by all) In the name of this congregation we send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that those to whom you go may share with us in the Communion of Christ s body and blood. We, who are many, are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. Post-Communion Prayer Prayer Book 365 The Blessing Closing Hymn 690 Guide me, O thou great Jehovah The Dismissal Organ Postlude Paul O. Manz, Prelude on the tune Cwm Rhondda Today s Gospel In today s Gospel Jesus tells the crowd of the true bread of life, the bread from heaven. The people follow Jesus after he has fed the crowd of five thousand, but they come mostly to obtain more food for their stomachs. The bread which the Son of Man offers is more genuinely lifegiving than the manna by which Israel was fed in the wilderness. In one sense this means that Jesus teaching is greater than that of Moses. More significantly still, it is belief in Jesus himself that leads to eternal life. We extend a warm welcome to our guests and visitors and we are delighted to have you worship with us. Our Communion Table is open to all baptized Christians. Please join us for refreshments in the Parish Hall after the service, and please complete the Visitor s Card found in the pew racks and place it in an Offering Basket or hand it to an Usher or Greeter after the service. 3

It s a wonderful way to begin your day. Prayers for Separated Families In light of recent events we have added a petition in the Prayers of the People for parents and children anywhere separated by distance. We add this prayer being mindful that there are many other circumstances when parents and children are separated: military service, employment, divorce, etc. Older generations in my own family experienced this when the death of parent (my paternal grandfather died of a farming accident when my dad was 3 years old) left the surviving spouse with no means to support a large family. Children were sent to convents or orphanages as a result. Regardless of circumstances, family separation can be a very traumatic experience.

6 For all people having this experience we offer our prayers of love, support and resolution. Fr. Dan Tour of Homes The 2019 Tour of Homes is off and running under the leadership of Sandy Eckstein and Julie Reppenhagen and advisor Mary Beth Bates. The Tour will take place Friday, March 22, 2019, and the Home Tour committee is presently asking for your suggestions for homes that might be considered. Please contact Sandy Eckstein or Julie snet.net) with your ideas. Our Tour of Homes will continue to have lots of opportunities to serve, so watch for updates. Outreach for August Summer time is slow time but folks are still hungry, so all summer Outreach will be collecting items for the food bank, in addition to your checks. In August we will be collecting paper products, diapers and baby food. Let s be sure St. Francis helps fill those empty summer shelves for our neighbors. Movie Night Our next Potluck Supper and Movie Night will be August 31, at 5 pm. Based in a true story, The Dish, takes a witty, comical look at the differing cultural attitudes between Australia and the U.S. while revisiting one of the greatest events in history! Solo Journeyers Mark your calendars for Sunday, August 19, for a Solo Journeyers wine and snack get together at the home of Larry Bear from 5 to 7 pm. Sign-up sheets will be available in the Parish Hall beginning Sunday, August 5. Think about what you would like to bring to share with friends. Do you speak Spanish? A group at St. Francis is forming to provide a meal once a month to migrants at the Comedor run by the Kino Border Initiative just across the border in Nogales, Sonora. They need at least one person who speaks passable conversational Spanish to help with communication while they are there. The group will be going down on the third Friday of each month in the morning. If you speak Spanish and would be willing to join them and help out, it would be greatly appreciated. Let Fr. Dan or Rev. Pam know if you d like to sign up to be a part of this team and help in their humanitarian effort. Bishop Candidates As you know, Bishop Smith is retiring, and the diocese is in a search process for a new bishop. The search committee has recently issued a final slate of 3 candidates with their biographical information. Information on the can-

7 didates is available at the entrances to the church and at the church office. Absence from the Church So often the clergy are the last to know when someone is absent from the church due to illness, infirmity of any kind, or simply for aging reasons. If you fall into one of these categories, please don t expect that the clergy will notice your absence and contact you. Because of the size of our parish and the fact that we have such a large number of people who come and go for various time periods throughout the year, it is impossible for the clergy to notice an absence because of illness or infirmity. Please, if you cannot make it to church for any reason, take it upon yourself or ask a friend to let the clergy or Parish Office know so we can follow up with proper pastoral care. Refugee Committee News Meeting the needs of the stranger at the border means providing much required clothing and personal supplies as larger numbers of incoming migrants stretch the facilities of the Kino Border Initiative. The list for supplies holds steady: men s pants, 28 34; women s pants: small and medium; jackets for men and woman; women tennis shoes up to size 7; men s tennis shoes, 8-9-1/2; flipflops for women and men; toiletries: soap, tooth-paste, shampoo, body lotions, deodorant. please donate only items listed. For needed donations of money, checks should be made payable to St Francis with KBI on the memo line. Clergy Discretionary Funds Donations to the Rector and Assistant Rector Discretionary Funds are always welcome and help us to offer assistance to people in our community who are struggling. Because of your generosity, we ve been able to help people with such things as food, gas, utilities, rent, school clothing, school supplies, unexpected medical bills and burial expenses. As we see it, it s not the clergy being able to help people in need, it s all of us, together, touching the lives of people who feel like they ve hit a dead end due to adverse circumstances in life. Thank you so much for your generosity. Fr. Dan & Rev. Pam Life Line Screening will be here at St. Francis on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 offering safe, painless, noninvasive preventive health screenings that are typically not a part of a routine physical. There are three ways to register: 1) Call toll-free: , 2) Online:

The title is Romans and the book was written by The Rev. Jay Sidebotham. The Group will meet in the St. Francis Room on Tuesdays at 10 am. The class will begin August 7 and run through September. Please read chapter one for August 7. Seekers Discussion Group The Group will be viewing and discussing videos on the Amish and Mormans and the PBS video Following the Steps of St. Peter. Join us any Thursday from 12:30 to 1:50 pm in the Conference Room. Listening Although church organists get paid whether or not anyone listens, there are those among your fellow worshippers who would appreciate a chance to take in the organ prelude (postlude too) without having to filter out the conversations of others. Please be courteous to those who would like to listen to the music played on the organ. Prayer Chain Call Doug Wolfe ( or, via , dwcsoftware@gmail.com) for Prayer Chain requests.
