Saint Francis in the Valley Episcopal Church Green Valley, Arizona The Rev. Daniel J. Messier, Rector The Rev. Pamela W. Hyde, Assistant Rector The Sixth Sunday After Pentecost 1 July 2018 Rite Two, Eucharistic Prayer B at 8 and 10 am Organ Prelude Jean Langlais, Chant de Paix (Song of Peace) Opening Hymn 718 God of our Fathers, whose almighty hand Opening Sentences Prayer Book 355 Gloria in excelsis Deo Hymnal S280 The Collect of the Day Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Word of God The First Reading In our First Reading the author of the Wisdom of Solomon meditates on the fact of death in a world created by a loving God. A Reading from the Wisdom of Solomon (1:13-15; 2:23-24). God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living. For he created all things so that they might exist; the generative forces of the world are wholesome, and there is no destructive poison in them, and the dominion of Hades is not on earth. For righteousness is immortal. God created us for incorruption, and made us in the image of his own eternity, but through the devil s envy death entered the world, and those who belong to his company experience it. Lector: The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God. The Psalm (30) (Please respond following the asterisk.) 1 I will exalt you, O Lord, because you have lifted me up * and have not let my enemies triumph over me. 2 O Lord my God, I cried out to you, * and you restored me to health. 3 You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead; * you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. 4 Sing to the Lord, you servants of his; * give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness. 5 For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, * his favor for a lifetime. 6 Weeping may spend the night, * but joy comes in the morning. 7 While I felt secure, I said, I shall never be disturbed. * You, Lord, with your favor, made me as strong as the mountains. 8 Then you hid your face, * and I was filled with fear. 9 I cried to you, O Lord; * I pleaded with the Lord, saying, 10 What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit? * will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness? 11 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me; * O Lord, be my helper.
12 You have turned my wailing into dancing; * you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy. 13 Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; * O Lord my God, I will give you thanks for ever. The Second Reading In our Second Reading the apostle Paul encourages the Corinthians to be generous in their contributions to a collection he has been gathering for the relief of the church in Jerusalem. A Reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians (8:7-15). As you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. And in this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written, The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little. Lector: The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn 716 God bless our native land The Gospel: Mark 5:21-43 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea. Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live. So he went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well. Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, Who touched my clothes? And his disciples said to him, You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, Who touched me? He looked all around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. He said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease. While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader s house to say, Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further? But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, Do not fear, only believe. 2
He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping. And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, Talitha cum, which means, Little girl, get up! And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. The Gospel of the Lord. Our heartfelt thanks to Sue for her long devotion to this vital ministry. We are please to announce that Doug Wolfe will be assuming leadership immediately; he can be reached via at dwcsoftware@ gmail.com, and by phone at The Centering Prayer Group will be taking some time off in July. The group will not be meeting July 8, 15, 22, and 29. Cruzando Fronteras The Bishop s pastoral letter that came out last week mentioned a diocesan Migration and Border Ministry called Cruzando Fronteras (Spanish for Crossing Borders ). Deacon Rodger Babnew, who interned here at St. Francis in late 2016, is spearhead-
ing it and Rev. Pam is now on the group s steering committee. This ministry is doing wonderful work for asylum seekers who are waiting for hearings at the border, including soliciting corporate donations of water for families and providing support and funding for groups offering temporary shelter, legal and social services, and other emergency services. If you wish to financially support Cruzando Fronteras, you can donate online to the diocese s campaign on Faithstreet ( faithstreet.com/campaigns/borderministry-for-asylum-seekers-theepiscopal-diocese-of-arizona), or by check to St. Francis, with Cruzando Fronteras in the memo line. The Bishop has reminded us that the crisis unfolding at the border calls for a Christian response, and we at St. Francis are committed to be present in prayer and in action in ministry, seeking a humanitarian solution. Outreach for July Summer time is slow time but folks are still hungry, so all summer Outreach will be collecting items for the food bank, in addition to your checks. In July we are collecting canned meats, pasta, rice and beans. Let s be sure St. Francis helps fill those empty summer shelves for our neighbors. Please be generous. More from Outreach Your Outreach Committee is looking for someone with a love of numbers or an accounting background who can use excel. Carol Crain will provide training and background. No benefits offered, but you will work with a great group. Let us know of your interest via at: behook@aol.com. Name Tags Don t forget to put on your name tag! It s an important part of being a friendly and welcoming church to wear that name tag so that everyone can call each other by name. If we assume that everyone already knows our name, we have already discounted our newcomers and signal to them that they re not important to us. Don t have a name tag or can t find yours? Contact Jeni Hisko in the office jenica@stfrancisgvaz.org or The Episcopal Church welcomes everyone let s show everyone who walks through our doors that we value and welcome all of God s children! Stephen Ministry Your Stephen Ministry Leaders here at St. Francis in the Valley are considering a fall class for training new Stephen Ministers. Have you ever been interested but been shy about this ministry? Please don t be shy! We d love to hear of your interest and explain
further about the training. We truly need you! Please contact BrandE Faupell or ), Marybeth Bates or ), Judy Craig com or ), Mark Eckstein or ). A Note From the Outreach Committee Though the Outreach Committee has not yet been successful in finding a treasurer or a chair, the committee will continue to work at this task through August. If any are interested in discovering what these jobs entail please behook@aol. com or call Should September arrive with no new leaders, the Outreach Committee will cease to exist. St. Francis outreach will continue through projects such as Imago Dei and the Refugee Committee. Refugee Committee News Congratulations to Marzieh Barbari. She has bought a car and is taking additional driving lessons. Hard to imagine a more astonishing piece of news. What a beguiling story of how she has so happily accommodated herself to the standard, but new for her, American way of life. Also, it will of course will provide more certain transformation for the entire family. Stay tuned for more good news from our Barbari family. Tour of Homes In 2018 we celebrated our 50th year coordinating the Tour of Homes as the major outreach effort for assistance in the community. We are again challenged with finding two persons to coordinate the 2019 Tour of Homes if, in fact, it is to continue. It s an amazing effort that brings together the largest involvement of parishioners (and non-parishioners) in a single outreach event. But for it to continue we need new leadership. Most of the procedures are already in place; teams are coordinated and excellent records are kept from year to year to make the job of coordinator as easy as possible. I m sure previous coordinators will be glad to lend their expertise and share their experience to make the job a lot easier. Let Fr. Dan know if you feel this a tug on your heart to coordinate the 2019 Tour of Homes. Unravelling Medical Haze Medical billing advocates work with people to review their bills, ensure charges are accurate and help them reduce costs. You can get that help by visiting with Sandy Eckstein in the Parish Library on Thursdays from 8 am until Noon during our
summer Parish Office hours. She will work with the insured as well as the uninsured. Lay Eucharistic Visitors/Ministers Have you considered participating in one of these essential ministries? Eucharistic Visitors bring communion to those who are not able to participate in the Sunday Eucharist because of illness or infirmity. Eucharistic Ministers administer the chalice at the Eucharist. It would be a blessing to our congregation if you d offer your services in one or both of these ministries, especially Lay Eucharistic Visitors. To quote Bishop Love of the Diocese of Albany, NY, To bring the sacrament of his precious Body and Blood to our brothers and sisters at the altar rail or at home is a profound spiritual privilege beyond measure. We are entrusted to carry the Gifts of God to the People of God with the Love of God. Please speak to Fr. Dan if you are interested in participating. Seekers Discussion Group The Group meets at 12:30 pm until about 1:50 pm in the Conference Room. Please continue reading Richard Rohr s Falling Upward. Class on Acts The Bible discussion class on the Acts of the Apostles will not meet July 3. Prayer Chain Call Doug Wolfe ( or, via , dwcsoftware@gmail.com) for Prayer Chain requests.
