Saints RAPHAEL, NICHOLAS, & IRENE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Rev. Fr. Barnabas Powell, Proistamenos 3074 Bethelview Road, Cumming GA (770) facebook.com/sts Raphael, Nicholas and Irene Greek Orthodox Church Read our daily devotionals at November 18, 2018 Ninth Sunday of Luke Sts Raphael Nicholas & Irene Greek Orthodox Church Cumming, Georgia Fast Day Fish Allowed
My Beloved Ones, For us as Orthodox Christians, the act of fasting is a practice rich with meaning, as we follow our Lord s example during His forty days in the desert. However, the true Orthodox Christian understands that it is not enough to practice fasting alone. The Church invites us to participate fully in its liturgical life during Fasts by also feeding our prayer life, and by giving charitably to those in need. Nativity Fast. For this reason, during the forty-day period before Christmas which began this Thursday, November 15 th there is a Tradition from the ancient Church of celebrating a Divine Liturgy every morning. Of course, today, where communities may one have one priest, this is a rare thing; but our Metropolis is blessed to be able have many clergymen including the Chancellor, the Very Rev. Fr. George Tsahakis, the Dean and Priest of the Annunciation Cathedral, Fr. Paul Kaplanis and Fr. Christos Mars who will be able to help us fulfill this important spiritual practice. When His Grace Bishop Sevastianos arrives on December 1 st, He and I will also be blessed to liturgize during some of the Holy Feasts that fall during the Daily liturgies however, require the presence of the faithful whether they are with us physically, or only spiritually. We ask therefore, that you please contact Mrs. Ethel Gjerde, the Metropolis Executive Assistant ( ) submitting to her the names of your loved ones whether they are in need, or if they have fallen asleep in the Lord so that we can pray for them daily. One of the Church Fathers, Ignatios Theoforos ( He Who Bears God on His Shoulders) instructs us concerning the Divine Liturgy, that, Take heed, then, often to come together to give thanks to God, and show forth His praise. For when you assemble frequently in the same place, the powers of Satan are destroyed, and the destruction at which he aims is prevented by the unity of your faith. Nothing is more precious than peace, by which all war, both in heaven and earth, is brought to an end. Having received this peace of mind and soul, we are better able to consider those acts such as fasting, prayer and charity. We should not assume the power that comes from the Liturgy to be any kind of magic. We offer the bread and wine as gifts to our God, who, by the Grace of His Holy Spirit, allows them to become the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior. The power of this Sacred Mystery is really the power of Love: connection with both our God, and with our fellow men both the living, and those who have fallen asleep (whom we commemorate as we prepare the Gifts). Within the Liturgy, we are taught by our Lord to reflect upon our own weaknesses, and to then forgive our brothers and sisters for trespasses committed against us. We then depart, spiritually strengthened, able to carry out the loving mission of the Gospel. During this Nativity Fast, let us pray for one another, let us help those who are in need spiritually or physically; and let us forgive one another. May we be blessed to take advantage of these Liturgies: to purify our hearts, to ask for Strength from Above, as well as for good thoughts and good actions. In this way, we may be prepared to receive our Savior, who condescended to take on Flesh for the Salvation of our souls. God be with us all. +ALEXIOS Metropolitan of Atlanta

9th Sunday of Luke On this day we also commemorate: Plato the Great Martyr of Ancyra; Holy Martyr Romanus; Zaccheus the Deacon Apolytikion for St. Raphael in the Fourth Tone Because of the finding of your holy relics, wise one, * the Island of Lesvos has been filled fully with the grace, * which God richly gave to you. * You, O devout martyr Raphael, paradoxically * appeared to many people, and you grant cures and healings. * And therefore we the faithful rejoice in all your miracles. Apolytikion for St. Raphael in the First Tone To the offspring of Ithaca, the pride and joy of Lesvos, * monastic martyrs glory, let us offer to Raphael our songs of praise; * for lately he appeared, and pours out cures and healings to us all. * Inexplicably he appears to believers, both in dreams and awake, who cry: * Glory to Christ who gave you His might. * Glory to Him who gave you miracles. * Glory to Him who through you fulfills our prayerful requests. Apolytikion in honor of Sts. Raphael, Nicholas & Irene Having contended on Lesvos for the sake of Christ God, you have sanctified the island since the discovery of your sacred relics, O blessed ones; wherefore we honor you, O Godbearing Raphael, together with Nicholas and virgin Irene, as our divine protectors and intercessors with the Lord. Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom Singers and Chanters: Richard Bethune, Tabitha Bethune, Anthony Birozes, David Boyd, Lynne Lucher, and Jimmy Smith Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone You descended from on high, O compassionate One, and condescended to be buried for three days, so that from the passions You might set us free. Our life and resurrection, O Lord, glory be to You. Apolytikion for the Martyr in the Fourth Tone Your Martyr, O Lord, was worthily awarded by You the crown of incorruption, in that he contested for You our immortal God. Since he possessed Your power, he defeated the tyrants, dashing the demons' powerless displays of defiance. O Christ God, at his fervent entreaties, save our souls. Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Tone The Savior's most pure and immaculate temple, the very precious bridal chamber and Virgin, who is the sacred treasure of the glory of God, on this day is introduced into the House of the Lord, and with herself she brings the grace in the divine Spirit. She is extolled by the Angels of God. A heavenly tabernacle is she. Hymns for the Artoclasia O Theotokos and Virgin, rejoice O Mary full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb; for you have borne the Savior of our souls. The wealthy have become poor and gone hungry, but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.
EPISTLE READING Prokeimenon. Mode Plagal 4. Psalm 75.11,1 Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them. Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:1-7 Brethren, I, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Προκείμενον. Ήχος πλ. δ'.
THE GOSPEL READING The Gospel According to Luke 12:16-21 The Lord said this parable: "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." As he said these things, he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
PRAYERS BEFORE HOLY COMMUNION I believe and confess, Lord, that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, Who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. I also believe that this is truly Your pure Body and that this is truly Your precious Blood. Therefore, I pray to You, have mercy upon me, and forgive my transgressions, voluntary and involuntary, in word and deed, in knowledge or in ignorance. And make me worthy, without condemnation, to partake of Your pure Mysteries for the remission of sins and for eternal life. Amen. How shall I, who am unworthy, enter into the splendor of Your saints? If I should dare to enter into the bridal chamber, my vesture will condemn me, since it is not a wedding garment; and being bound up, I shall be cast out by the angels. Cleanse, O Lord, the filth of my soul, and save me, as You are the one Who loves mankind. In Your love, Lord, cleanse my soul, and save me. Master Who loves mankind, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, let not these Holy Gifts be to my judgment because I am unworthy, but rather for the purification and sanctification of both soul and body and the pledge of the life and Kingdom to come. It is good for me to cleave unto God and to place in Him the hope of my salvation. O Son of God, receive me today as a partaker of Your mystical supper. For I will not speak of the mystery to Your enemies, nor will I give You a kiss, as did Judas. But like the thief, I confess to You: Remember me, Lord, in Your Kingdom.
WHAT IS ARTOCLASIA? The artoclasia is a service held at the end of Vespers or at the end of Orthros (Matins). Five round loaves of bread are offered by individual faithful as a sign of devotion for personal or family anniversaries such as name days and other occasions bearing close connection with the experience of the Orthodox. The five loaves are reminiscent of the five loaves that Jesus Christ blessed in the desert and by which five thousand of His hearers were fed. The artoclasia also symbolizes and brings into practice the Agape meals of the very early Christian communities. Then, after the faithful received the Body and Blood of Christ, they would gather in a common meal, thus signifying the brotherly association established between them by their common faith and by their receiving the same sacramental Lord. Also, the Agape meals served a charitable purpose by providing meals to the poorer from among them. The significance behind the Orthodox artoclasia includes also the fact that, among the Orthodox, bread continues to be highly valued not only as a basic food but also as the supreme symbol of the Body of Christ; for it is the bread which is changed by consecration in the Liturgy into the Body of Christ. Christ has been repeatedly designated as the Bread of Life, and also as the Bread which came from heaven. Bread does also symbolize the Church of Christ, which has spread all over as the wheat on the mountains and which was gathered by Christ into one body (Didache). Thus, bread has been given a mystical meaning according to which it constitutes the essence of the spiritual life of the Christian. The blessed bread of the Orthodox artoclasia has been from ancient times considered to effect personal sanctification and to help the individual against bodily infirmities and illness if taken with faith. The Greek term artoclasia (*see the note at the bottom of the page) derives from the very words used by the Evangelists in describing the Last Supper at which Christ broke bread and offered it to His disciples as His own Body. Also, bread is broken in the Orthodox artoclasia, signifying not only an identity in terms but a far more significant affinity between the Lord s and His Church s breaking of bread. *from the Greek words artos/άρτος = bread and klasis/κλάσις = breaking Excerpt from A Dictionary of Greek Orthodoxy
