Father Dimitri s Message My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On February 12-14th, I will be with two of our families in Libertyville, Illinois for Western Regional Famuily Basketball Tournament. Now, one might ask why I am leaving our Church on Sunday the 14th for the sake of only two families and four children. First, it is an annual event that our parish had historically attended. We may have only 4 children participating this year, but if I don't go then the importance of this event is lessened. It can become a slippery slope if we don't keep this event as important that eventually we would cease going altogether which would be a tragedy for the development of the youth of our parish. By having the priest there celebrating Liturgy with the other clergy and the bishop we show our stamp of approval that this event is important and worthwhile for our children. To simply ignore it allows the event to fall into obscurity. Second, I feel it is important to support the kids, even if there are only a few so that they see that the Church cares. This month we celebrate the Entrance of Our Lord into the Temple. This tradition from ancient times in which families would come after forty days with an offering for the Temple along with the Baby was the re-introduction of the mother back into the community. We are blessed this month and last month to witness this tradition carried on in the blessings of Dr. Valerie Antonopoulos with her son Alexander Perry and Andrea Konidas with her son Konstadinos. During the 40 days, the mother is forbidden attend Church/Temple or any social functions. This time is meant to be spent healing from the birth and, of course, bonding with the Child. Some strict Greek yiayias feel the mother should not even leave the house during this time. The priest brings the child into the Church and, if it is a male child, into the Altar as his first steps as potential clergy, while stating the words of St. Symeon. Lord, now let your servant depart in peace. For my eyes have seen Your Salvation which you have prepared for all people. A light of revelation to the Gentiles and Glory to your people Isreael. This month we will also remember our Brother and Concelebrant, Fr. Constantine Balomenos for his one year memorial. It is hard to believe a year ago Bishop DEMETRIOS of Mokissos traveled here with other clergy to honor our brother with his final Liturgy and intern him in Memorial Park. I think I speak for all of us when I say he was not the most conventional priest. He was a unique man who made others laugh and held a particular fondness for the Church and his priesthood. I was honored to get to know him and learn from him. I will always remember Fr. B and his impact on the lives around him. Memory eternal. I remain your servant in Christ, Fr. Dimitri Tobias, Proistamenos February 2016 Page 5

President s Message Hello friends and family of Holy Trinity. I would like to start by thanking the church board for electing me as parish council president for I am honored and look forward to being part of a board that hopes to keep our church moving in the right direction. As a lifelong member of Holy Trinity with numerous great memories growing up in this church, I want to ensure that our church is here for the upcoming generations. I want my children, my nieces, and all of their young friends to be able to remember the Pascha celebrations, Sunday School, Greek School, and more recently the good times of the Greek Festival. We all know not one of these memories has come without the hard work of the people of our church. I would like to thank everyone who has made these past celebrations and memories a reality and I look forward to making many more together. Going forward, one thing I hope we all keep in mind, this board makes decisions based on what they feel is best for the church. The same will go for the various new committees that have been set up. I look forward to seeing some exciting changes this year from our church. Please consider joining one of these revitalized church committees to have your voice heard. If you would like to be part of the committee process please contact the committee chair person to find out how you can be more involved. Again, thank you all and I look forward to another great year at Holy Trinity! Costa Tsiobanos 2016, Parish Council President Philoptochos Sunday February 7th Please Wear Red in Solidarity this Sunday. 7 Stewardship Time-Talent-Treasure We ended 2016 with 79 Stewards and $63,000 in pledge collections. We are very pleased with progress we have made in our Stewardship program. Our long term goal should be to receive enough pledge support so that fund raisers are used to help charitable organizations in our community as well as our own church. As it currently stands, Saturday In The Park will no longer be part of our overall fund raising efforts. Our Greek Festival has become a premier event in Siouxland and expanding it to three days has paid dividends for Holy Trinity, allowing us to eliminate one fund raiser. The participation by our parishioners during the festival has been noticed by the community. Several have commented at the ticket booth about how nice it is that everyone, young and old are there to help the festival be a success. I looked at them in the eye and said Thank you. I don t know if 100% of our parishioners participate but I d bet it s very close. Our customers see the end product and have no grasp of the hours of preparation the Festival involves. The parishioners take their stewardship efforts seriously and give their time talent and treasure. John Bostinelos Stewardship Chair Holy Trinity 2015 Stewards Fr. 8 Greetings Everyone! Philoptochos News Now that all the Christmas decorations are put away and the New Year s festivities have passed, I look forward to spring quickly approaching. Just to highlight from last month, January 10th we held our annual Vasilopita auction. I thank everyone who baked and decorated this year s beautiful selections. Through the community s efforts we helped both those near and far. We raised for St. Basil s Academy $150, $200 for St. Nicholas Shrine, $255 for the Sunday school, $205 for the Goya, $350 for the dance troop, and $350 for the Philoptochos Theotokos fund. Thank you to everyone who supported the auction this year! Looking into February, we have many fantastic opportunities for outreach. To support the national Feed the Hungry campaign we will gather for two projects. So please mark your calendars. On Thursday February 5th at 5;30pm, we will be going to the Ronald McDonald house to prepares meals that can be frozen or refrigerated for families coming to stay at the house. The house is located on 2500 Nebraska Street. Some history on the house The first house was started in 1974 in Philadelphia, so that families with sick children undergoing months of care and chemotherapy, would have somewhere other than a cramped hospital room to stay. The McDonald s corporation was enlisted to help promote this house (and just as a fun fact, the Shamrock milkshake was introduced to help raise funds to start the house!) The network of houses quickly spread and now there are more than 307 houses worldwide. The Sioux City house has 6 bedrooms and opened in So let us gather and provide the Philoxenia we are known for at Holy Trinity to these families in need. For the second community event, we were invited by the Senior Center to host a Greek day on February 24th in the morning. At the Center, we will host a small cooking lesson and provide a snack for the group. There will also be a small tour of the church by Father Dimitri. Please see Mary Sharp for details on this exciting project. Now on a national level, February is Go Red for women month. This is the American Heart Assoication s call to raise awareness for heart disease in women. Today, heart attacks and stroke are the #1 killer of women in the United states. With 1 in 3 women dying, heart disease claims more lives than cancer. And shocking of all, this disease is 80% preventable. Nationally, February 7th is Philoptochos Go Red Sunday and members across the country are asked to wear red to church to make people aware of the problem. I see many exciting and new opportunities for our Philoptochos group this month! With Sisterly Agape, Dr. Fotene Karantinos, Philoptochos President February 2016 Page 8

Youth Corner On the evening of January 6th, the Youth met at the YMCA for the Annual Dive for the Cross. Congratulations to Jeb Makinon and Perry Antonopoulos for winning the dives for their respective ages. Perry Antonopoulos won the dive for the entire Youth Group. May he and the other children continue to zealously pursue the Cross of Christ no matter in what depths they may fins it. For the month of February the Children will aid the Philoptochos in putting together kits for the Homeless. Sunday School Please continue to bring your child to Sunday School. They learn so much and our teachers work so hard to prepare lessons. Thank you for taking an active role in yout child s salvation. Please also remember to pray with your child at home, and ask him/her what he/she learned this week in Sunday School! Orthodox on Tap February OoT to meet on Saturday, February 26th at 7:00 pm. Location to be Determined RSVP to Leah Brockway by February 22 Please see Shanda Antonopoulos for more into! On January 22nd we were hosted by Dimitri and Michelle Bostinellos at Minerva s. 10 February 2nd The Presentation of our Lord into the Temple Easperinos on the 1st begins at 6:00 p.m. Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity on the 2nd begins at 9:00 a.m. When the most pure Mother and Ever-Virgin Mary's forty days of purification had been fulfilled, she took her firstborn Son to Jerusalem on this, the fortieth day after His birth, that she might present Him in the temple according to the Law of Moses, which teaches that every first-born male child be dedicated to God, and also that she might offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons, as required by the Law (Luke 2:22-24; Exod. 13:2; Lev. 12:6-8). On this same day, a just and devout man, the greatly aged Symeon, was also present in the temple, being guided by the Holy Spirit. For a long time, this man had been awaiting the salvation of God, and he had been informed by divine revelation that he would not die until he beheld the Lord's Christ. Thus, when he beheld Him at that time and took Him up into his aged arms, he gave glory to God, singing: "Now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, O Master..." And he confessed that he would close his eyes joyfully, since he had seen the Light of revelation for the nations and the Glory of Israel (Luke 2:25-32). From ancient times, the Holy Church has retained this tradition of the churching of the mother and new-born child on the fortieth day and of the reading of prayers of purification. The Apodosis of the Feast of the Meeting in the Temple is usually on the 9th of February. This, however, may vary if the Feast falls within the period of the Triodion. Should this occur, the Typicon should be consulted for specific information concerning the Apodosis of the Feast. Apolytikion in the First Tone Hail Virgin Theotokos full of Grace, for Christ our God, the Sun of Righteousness, has dawned from you, granting light to those in darkness. And you, O Righteous Elder, rejoice, taking in your arms, the Deliverance of our souls, who grants us Resurrection. Kontakion in the First Tone Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One. February 8th: St. Theodore the Commander and Great Martyr Divine Liturgy at St. Thomas begins at 9:00 a.m. The holy Martyr Theodore was from Euchaita of Galatia and dwelt in Heraclea of Pontus. He was a renowned commander in the military, and the report came to the Emperor Licinius that he was a Christian and abominated the idols. Licinius therefore sent certain men to him from Nicomedia, to honor him and ask him to appear before him. Through them, however, Saint Theodore sent back a message that it was necessary for various reasons, that Licinius come to Heraclea. Licinius, seeing in this a hope of turning Saint Theodore away from Christ did as was asked of him. When the Emperor came to Heraclea, Saint Theodore met him with honor, and the Emperor in turn gave Theodore his hand, believing that through him he would be able to draw the Christians to the worship of his idols. Seated upon his throne in the midst of the people, he publicly bade Theodore offer sacrifice to the gods. But Theodore asked that the emperor entrust him with the most venerable of his gods, those of gold and silver, that he might take them home and himself attend upon them that evening, promising that the following day he would honor them in public. The Emperor, filled with joy at these tidings, gave command that Theodore's request be fulfilled. When the Saint had taken the idols home, he broke them in pieces and distributed the gold and silver to the poor by night. The next day a centurion named Maxentius told Licinius that he had seen a pauper pass by carrying the head of Artemis. Saint Theodore, far from repenting of this, confessed Christ boldly. Licinius, in an uncontainable fury, had the Saint put to many torments, then crucified. While upon the cross, the holy Martyr was further tormented -- his privy parts were cut off, he was shot with arrows, his eyes were put out, and he was left on the cross to die. The next day Licinius sent men to take his corpse and cast it into the sea; but they found the Saint alive and perfectly whole. Through this, many believed in Christ. Seeing his own men turning to Christ, and the city in an uproar, Licinius had Theodore beheaded, about the year 320. The Saint's holy relics were returned to his ancestral home on June 8, which is also a feast of the Great Martyr Theodore. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone In truth enlisted with the King of the Heavens, thou didst become for Him a noble commander, O trophy-bearer and Great Martyr Theodore. With the weaponry of faith didst thou arm thyself wisely and didst utterly destroy all the hordes of the demons, as a triumphant athlete of the Lord; wherefore we ever do faithfully call thee blest. Kontakion in the Second Tone In courage of soul, and furnished with the arms of faith, thou tookest in hand the word of God as though a spear and didst put thy foe to flight, thou great boast of martyrs, O Theodore; now together with them, O Saint, cease not to entreat Christ our God February 2016 Page 10

for all of us. February 10th St. Haralambos Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity begins at 9:00 a.m. This Saint was a priest of the Christians in Magnesia, the foremost city of Thessaly, in the diocese having the same name. He contested during the reign of Alexander Severus ( ), when Lucian was Proconsul of Magnesia. At the time of his martyrdom the Saint was 103 years of age. St. Haralampus is commemorated on February 10th, with the exception when this date falls on the Saturday of the Souls preceding Lent or on Clean Monday (the first day of Lent), in which case the feast is celebrated on February 9th. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone O wise Haralambos, you were proven an unshakable pillar of the Church of Christ; an ever-shining lamp of the universe. You shone in the world by your martyrdom. You delivered us from the moonless night of idolatry O blessed one. Wherefore, boldly intercede to Christ that we may be saved. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone O Priest-martyr, athlete, champion Haralambos, your relics are a priceless treasure of the Church. Wherefore she rejoices, glorifying the Creator. February 26th The Holy Great Martyr Photine, the Samaritan Woman Divine Liturgy at St. Thomas begins at 9:00 a.m. Saint Photine was the Samaritan Woman who encountered Christ our Saviour at Jacob's Well (John 4:1-42). Afterwards she laboured in the spread of the Gospel in various places, and finally received the crown of martyrdom in Rome with her two sons and five sisters, during the persecutions under the Emperor Nero. Apolytikion in the Third Tone All illumined by the Holy Spirit, thou didst drink with great and ardent longing of the waters Christ Saviour gave unto thee; and with the streams of salvation wast thou refreshed, which thou abundantly gavest to those athirst. O Great Martyr and true peer of Apostles, Photine, entreat Christ God to grant great mercy unto us. Kontakion in the Third Tone Photine the glorious, the crown and glory of the Martyrs, hath this day ascended to the shining mansions of Heaven, and she calleth all together to sing her praises, that they might be recompensed with her hallowed graces. Let us all with faith and longing extol her gladly in hymns of triumph and joy. Koulouma Pot-Luck Dinner Following Great Compline (6:00 pm) Clean Monday, March 7th February 2016 Page 11

For our Holy Trinity Family abroad: Pledge whatever you can (the Lord knows your intent), even if it is just $25 to help cover the cost of printing and mailing the newsletter. If even that $25 is too much for you and your family, than pledge to support a ministry, be it listening to sermons, classes, etc. For our Local Holy Trinity Family: Pledge whatever you can (the Lord knows your intent), but consider the concept of tithing (10% of one s income), which is the model our Lord prescribes. If that is too much, lower the percentage to what is possible for your family. While there is no dues for our parish, and we will accept any stewardship pledge, even $0.01, one must ask whether doing the minimum is a healthy attitude. February 2016 Page 14
