My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Father Dimitri s Message As many of you know, I traveled recently to the nation of Japan to marry my brother George to his wife Renko (Valentina). What many may not realize is that Japan is also an Orthodox country, autonomous under the Patriarchate of Moscow. I wanted to share with you the life of this amazing missionary. Saint Nicholas, Enlightener of Japan, Ivan Dimitrievich Kasatkin, was born on August 1, 1836 in the village of Berezovsk, Belsk district, Smolensk diocese, where his father served as deacon. At the age of five he lost his mother. He completed the Belsk religious school, and afterwards the Smolensk Theological Seminary. In 1857 Ivan Kasatkin entered the Saint Peterburg Theological Academy. On June 24, 1860, in the academy temple of the Twelve Apostles, Bishop Nectarius tonsured him with the name Nicholas. On June 29, the Feast of the foremost Apostles Peter and Paul, the monk Nicholas was ordained deacon. The next day, on the altar feast of the academy church, he was ordained to the holy priesthood. Later, at his request, Father Nicholas was assigned to Japan as head of the consular church in the city of Hakodate. At first, the preaching of the Gospel in Japan seemed completely impossible. In Father Nicholas s own words: the Japanese of the time looked upon foreigners as beasts, and on Christianity as a villainous sect, to which only villains and sorcerers could belong. He spent eight years in studying the country, the language, manners and customs of the people among whom he would preach. In 1868, the flock of Father Nicholas numbered about twenty Japanese. At the end of 1869 Hieromonk Nicholas reported in person to the Synod in Peterburg about his work. A decision was made, on January 14, 1870, to form a special Russian Spiritual Mission for preaching the Word of God among the pagan Japanese. Father Nicholas was elevated to the rank of archimandrite and appointed as head of this Mission. Returning to Japan after two years in Russia, he transferred some of the responsibility for the Hakodate flock to Hieromonk Anatolius, and began his missionary work in Tokyo. In 1871 there was a persecution of Christians in Hakodate. Many were arrested (among them, the first Japanese Orthodox priest Paul Sawabe). Only in 1873 did the persecution abate somewhat, and the free preaching of Christianity became possible. In this year Archimandrite Nicholas began the construction of a stone building in Tokyo which housed a church, a school for fifty men, and later a religious school, which became a seminary in In 1874, Bishop Paul of Kamchatka arrived in Tokyo to ordain as priests several Japanese candidates recommended by Archimandrite Nicholas. At the Tokyo Mission, there were four schools: for catechists, for women, for church servers, and a seminary. At Hakodate there were two separate schools for boys and girls. In the second half of 1877, the Mission began regular publication of the journal Church Herald. By the year 1878 there already 4115 Christians in Japan, and there were a number of Christian communities. Church services and classes in Japanese, the publication of religious and moral books permitted the Mission to attain such results in a short time. Archimandrite Nicholas petitioned the Holy Synod in December of 1878 to provide a bishop for Japan. Archimandrite Nicholas was consecrated bishop on March 30, 1880 in the Trinity Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Returning to Japan, he resumed his apostolic work with increased fervor. He February 2015 Page 5

completed construction on the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Tokyo, he translated the service books, and compiled a special Orthodox theological dictionary in the Japanese language. Great hardship befell the saint and his flock at the time of the Russo-Japanese War. For his ascetic labor during these difficult years, he was elevated to the rank of Archbishop. In 1911, half a century had passed since the young hieromonk Nicholas had first set foot on Japanese soil. At that time there were 33,017 Christians in 266 communities of the Japanese Orthodox Church, including 1 Archbishop, 1 bishop, 35 priests, 6 deacons, 14 singing instructors, and 116 catechists. On February 3, 1912, Archbishop Nicholas departed peacefully to the Lord at the age of seventy-six. The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church glorified him on April 10, 1970, since the saint had long been honored in Japan as a righteous man, and a prayerful intercessor before the Lord. I was blessed to serve in the Church and venerate the relics of the Saint which are considered national treasures. I remain your servant in Christ, Please visit our website! 7 Greetings, President s Message The Holidays have come and gone and Holy Trinity is once again bustling with activity! I would like to thank the Parish Council for the opportunity to be Parish Council President this year. I am excited about this year. We have many positive things happening at Holy Trinity and I look forward to serving our Parish Community. During January, your new Parish Council was in full swing. We have a great Parish Council this year with a good balance of young members along with the experience of some returning members. Our young members have great ideas for our future and I look forward to working with EVERYONE for the benefit of Holy Trinity. Our Stewardship Committee, under the direction of Dr. Kosta Antonopoulos, is hard at work seeking commitments from YOU, OUR STEWARDS. Please assist the Stewardship Team when they call. The Stewardship Committee, along with the Parish Council, thank you for your contributions of Time, Talent, and Treasure to Holy Trinity. Our Building Committee, under the direction of Mr. Costa Tsiobanos, has also been busy. His team is looking at doing some projects in the church such as insulating the attic and gathering bids for floor repair work in the Church Hall that is needed due to a broken pipe that occurred in early January. February is here and it looks to be a busy month. Once again, many ministry opportunities are available. There is something out there for everyone! From a Healthy Body & Healthy Soul to making some great Greek food with We Knead You. From Blessed Darkness to St. Basil s Students. From Choir & Chanters to The Patriarchs. From the Cyber Classroom to Spiritual Reflections. Holy Trinity is alive and vibrant with Orthodoxy! Something truly is available for everyone. This year s Spring Session of Ministries is being co-sponsored by Fr. Dimitri of Holy Trinity AND Fr. Lucas Rice of St. Thomas Antiochian Orthodox Church. They have put together an excellent series of programs to teach the faithful of both Holy Trinity AND St. Thomas more about our beloved faith. A great opportunity for both churches to become closer. All we need to do is take the time to get involved! The week of Feb. 1-7, the Siouxland Humane Society will be doing their annual Caramel Apple Fundraiser in the Church Hall & Kitchen. This event has become a great partnership between Holy Trinity and the Humane Society. The Humane Society has been generous to our Parish and we are happy to be a part of their project again this year. Many of our own Stewards volunteer their time towards this event. What a great way for Holy Trinity to be involved in the local community. Let us offer our kindness and hospitality to all volunteers of this great project! On Feb. 8 th, the Apokreatiko Glendi along with the annual AHEPA Chili Cook-off will take February 2015 Page 7

place in the Church Hall. Because of time limitations during February, these two events are being combined this year. It should be a fun event! The Chili Cook-off has grown some in the past couple of years. The AHEPA appreciates your continued support. The following weekend, Feb , our GOYA along with many of the faithful from Holy Trinity will be traveling to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the annual Western Region Basketball Tournament. The church of Sts. Constantine & Helen are hosting the event this year. Youth Director Dean Karras has been busy with organizing and practicing with our team. Best wishes for a trophy this year! Go Holy Trinity!! Great Lent begins Monday, Feb 23 rd, with Clean Monday. The service of Great Compline along with the annual Koulouma Dinner will be held that evening. Fr. Dimitri will be holding services on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays of Great Lent (with additional days to be announced). Please be sure to attend these services. Our church has so much to offer during this very special time of the year. Well, as you can truly see, Holy Trinity IS alive! Holy Trinity IS vibrant! We have plenty available for everyone. The only thing we need to do is GET INVOLVED! As Parish Council President, I make myself available to each of you should you have any concerns. You may contact me at If I do not answer, please leave a message and I WILL return your call. I look forward to seeing you in Church! John Vlahoulis 2015, Parish Council President We thank Dave and Andrea Kjos for their generous donation of the Vigil Light Candle Stands that rest in front of the Royal Icons. 9 Philoptochos News Every 2 months an on-line newsletter, 'Philanthropy Witness', is provided by the National Philoptochos organization. To read it in its entirety, you can go to I find it helpful in keeping us up to date on all that this wonderful organization does throughout the world. The website in general, is an excellent source of information on the organization, its goals and endeavors. Did you know that in the two year period of January 2013 through December 2014, National Philoptochos distributed an unprecedented $3.102 million in philanthropic aid? We are 27,000 members strong nationwide and even hold a non-voting seat in the United Nations. Funding for social service programs and children's medical causes are important functions of the organization. Many of you have come to help fill back packs locally at the Siouxland Food Band for the children to have nutritious food to eat over the weekend, but did you know that in Michigan, the Metropolis Philoptochos presented a check for $10,000 to this program to purchase food for those backpacks? Yes, we know they are much bigger organizations than us and their membership numbers into the dozens at many churches. Yet we can do the same here, albeit, on a smaller scale here if we unite for the betterment of society. Membership is important in our efforts to provide Philanthropy and meet our obligations. Please consider joining our worthy organization and giving of what time, treasure and talent you have available. I know we are all kept busy with todays' world, but please strongly consider adding this to your causes. As they say, 'the pay may be negligent, but the benefits are out of this world'. Philoptochos responds immediately to needs and crises and its philanthropic outreach extends to each area of the country and throughout the world. In just recent history, we've assisted in areas such as the devastation following Hurricane Katrina in the United States to a water filtration system for Haiti, earthquake relief in Turkey, Tsunami relief in Japan and the list goes on. The recent announcement of the approval to rebuild St. Nicholas Church in Ground Zero has brought with it a call for action by all Philoptochos and Orthodox worldwide. This was the only house of worship destroyed on Sept. 11 th and will be rebuilt as the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine. This house of worship for all the faithful will also serve as a place to offer healing and comfort to the millions of people who will visit the World Trae Center memorial annually. In the coming weeks and months, we the local Philoptochos will do what we can to contribute to this rebuilding effort. Please support us in the goal. A huge THANK YOU to all who participated in the Vasilopita Auctions this past month. Those who baked and those who bought! May your efforts bring you joy and health in the year ahead! With Sisterly Agape, President Mary Baryo Daughters News Joan Vlahoulis, President, would like to thank all of the ladies who came to help bake Tsourekia. February 2015 Page 9

Stewardship Time-Talent-Treasure Holy Trinity 2015 Stewards Fr. Dimitri & Presbytera Mary Tobias Dr. Kosta & Dr. Valerie Antonopoulos Mr. & Mrs. John Baryo Mr. & Mrs. Emmanuel Bikakis Mr. & Mrs. Dimitri Bostinelos Mr. & Mrs. John Bostinelos Mr. & Mrs. Dean Karras Mr. & Mrs. Alex Karras Mr. & Mrs. Dave Kjos Mr. & Mrs. Dale Milbrodt Mr. & Mrs. George Paradise Mrs. Maria Rigas Mr. & Mrs. Spero Siganos Mr. & Mrs. George Tsiobanos From God every family in heaven and on earth is named. (Eph 3:15) I look forward to being your stewardship chair for this upcoming year. I think it is important to once again discuss what it means to be a steward of Holy Trinity. Orthodox Christian stewardship is a way of life, which acknowledges accountability, reverence, and responsibility before God. Stewardship can be defined as the call of all the faithful to share willingly the gifts that God has bestowed on them, including sharing these gifts for God s work. Stewardship is devotion and service to God and his church as persons, as families, as a parish, as a metropolis, as a national church and as a church universal. It is our active commitment to use ALL our time, talent and treasure for the benefit of humankind in grateful acknowledgement of Christ s redeeming love. Stewardship is Caring for the needs of others, offering one s self to God as offered himself to us. It is what a person does after saying I believe as proof of that belief. The goal of any stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loyalty and trust and act on those beliefs. It allows us to affirm that every aspect of our lives comes as a gift to Him. It calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts which they have been blessed. An Orthodox Christian Steward is an active participant in the life of the church. Each year the steward is expected to carefully review his or her personal circumstances and make a commitment of TIME, TALENT and TREASURE to support the Parish and her Ministries. As you all turn in your stewardship cards, please remember that your stewardship provides the foundation for our Parish Ministries and your card is considered complete only when you have selected a parish Ministry. 13 February 2nd The Presentation of our Lord into the Temple Easperinos on the 1st begins at 6:00 p.m. Orthros on the 2nd begins at 9:00 a.m. When the most pure Mother and Ever-Virgin Mary's forty days of purification had been fulfilled, she took her firstborn Son to Jerusalem on this, the fortieth day after His birth, that she might present Him in the temple according to the Law of Moses, which teaches that every first-born male child be dedicated to God, and also that she might offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons, as required by the Law (Luke 2:22-24; Exod. 13:2; Lev. 12:6-8). On this same day, a just and devout man, the greatly aged Symeon, was also present in the temple, being guided by the Holy Spirit. For a long time, this man had been awaiting the salvation of God, and he had been informed by divine revelation that he would not die until he beheld the Lord's Christ. Thus, when he beheld Him at that time and took Him up into his aged arms, he gave glory to God, singing: "Now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, O Master..." And he confessed that he would close his eyes joyfully, since he had seen the Light of revelation for the nations and the Glory of Israel (Luke 2:25-32). From ancient times, the Holy Church has retained this tradition of the churching of the mother and new-born child on the fortieth day and of the reading of prayers of purification. The Apodosis of the Feast of the Meeting in the Temple is usually on the 9th of February. This, however, may vary if the Feast falls within the period of the Triodion. Should this occur, the Typicon should be consulted for specific information concerning the Apodosis of the Feast. Apolytikion in the First Tone Hail Virgin Theotokos full of Grace, for Christ our God, the Sun of Righteousness, has dawned from you, granting light to those in darkness. And you, O Righteous Elder, rejoice, taking in your arms, the Deliverance of our souls, who grants us Resurrection. Kontakion in the First Tone Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One. February 8th: St. Theodore the Commander and Great Martyr Orthros begins at 9:00 a.m. The holy Martyr Theodore was from Euchaita of Galatia and dwelt in Heraclea of Pontus. He was a renowned commander in the military, and the report came to the Emperor Licinius that he was a Christian and abominated the idols. Licinius therefore sent certain men to him from Nicomedia, to honor him and ask him to appear before him. Through them, however, Saint Theodore sent back a message that it was necessary for various reasons, that Licinius come to Heraclea. Licinius, seeing in this a hope of turning Saint Theodore away from Christ did as was asked of him. When the Emperor came to Heraclea, Saint Theodore met him with honor, and the Emperor in turn gave Theodore his hand, believing that through him he would be able to draw the Christians to the worship of his idols. Seated upon his throne in the midst of the people, he publicly bade Theodore offer sacrifice to the gods. But Theodore asked that the emperor entrust him with the most venerable of his gods, those of gold and silver, that he might take them home and himself attend upon them that evening, promising that the following day he would honor them in public. The Emperor, filled with joy at these tidings, gave command that Theodore's request be fulfilled. When the Saint had taken the idols home, he broke them in pieces and distributed the gold and silver to the poor by night. The next day a centurion named Maxentius told Licinius that he had seen a pauper pass by carrying the head of Artemis. Saint Theodore, far from repenting of this, confessed Christ boldly. Licinius, in an uncontainable fury, had the Saint put to many torments, then crucified. While upon the cross, the holy Martyr was further tormented -- his privy parts were cut off, he was shot with arrows, his eyes were put out, and he was left on the cross to die. The next day Licinius sent men to take his corpse and cast it into the sea; but they found the Saint alive and perfectly whole. Through this, many believed in Christ. Seeing his own men turning to Christ, and the city in an uproar, Licinius had Theodore beheaded, about the year 320. The Saint's holy relics were returned to his ancestral home on June 8, which is also a feast of the Great Martyr Theodore. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone In truth enlisted with the King of the Heavens, thou didst become for Him a noble commander, O trophy-bearer and Great Martyr Theodore. With the weaponry of faith didst thou arm thyself wisely and didst utterly destroy all the hordes of the demons, as a triumphant athlete of the Lord; wherefore we ever do faithfully call thee blest. Kontakion in the Second Tone In courage of soul, and furnished with the arms of faith, thou tookest in hand the word of God as though a spear and didst put thy foe to flight, thou great boast of martyrs, O Theodore; now together with them, O Saint, cease not to entreat Christ our God for all of us. February 2015 Page 13

February 10th St. Haralambos Orthros begins at 9:00 a.m. This Saint was a priest of the Christians in Magnesia, the foremost city of Thessaly, in the diocese having the same name. He contested during the reign of Alexander Severus ( ), when Lucian was Proconsul of Magnesia. At the time of his martyrdom the Saint was 103 years of age. St. Haralampus is commemorated on February 10th, with the exception when this date falls on the Saturday of the Souls preceding Lent or on Clean Monday (the first day of Lent), in which case the feast is celebrated on February 9th. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone O wise Haralambos, you were proven an unshakable pillar of the Church of Christ; an ever-shining lamp of the universe. You shone in the world by your martyrdom. You delivered us from the moonless night of idolatry O blessed one. Wherefore, boldly intercede to Christ that we may be saved. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone O Priest-martyr, athlete, champion Haralambos, your relics are a priceless treasure of the Church. Wherefore she rejoices, glorifying the Creator. February 26th The Holy Great Martyr Photine, the Samaritan Woman Orthros begins at 9:00 a.m. Saint Photine was the Samaritan Woman who encountered Christ our Saviour at Jacob's Well (John 4:1-42). Afterwards she laboured in the spread of the Gospel in various places, and finally received the crown of martyrdom in Rome with her two sons and five sisters, during the persecutions under the Emperor Nero. February 17th St. Theodore, the Tyro, the Great Martyr Orthros begins at 9 a.m. Saint Theodore who was from Amasia of Pontus, contested during the reign of Maximian ( ). He was called Tyro, from the Latin Tiro, because he was a newly enlisted recruit. When it was reported that he was a Christian, he boldly confessed Christ; the ruler, hoping that he would repent, gave him time to consider the matter more completely and then give answer. Theodore gave answer by setting fire to the temple of Cybele, the "mother of the gods," and for this he suffered a martyr's death by fire. See also the First Saturday of the Fast. Apolytikion in the Second Tone Great are the achievements of faith! In the fountain of flame, as by the water of rest, the holy Martyr Theodore rejoiced; for having been made a wholeburnt offering in the fire, he was offered as sweet bread unto the Trinity. By his prayers, O Christ God, save our souls. Kontakion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone Having received the Faith of Christ in thy heart as a breastplate, thou didst trample upon the enemy hosts, O much-suffering champion; and thou hast been crowned eternally with a heavenly crown, since thou art invincible. Apolytikion in the Third Tone All illumined by the Holy Spirit, thou didst drink with great and ardent longing of the waters Christ Saviour gave unto thee; and with the streams of salvation wast thou refreshed, which thou abundantly gavest to those athirst. O Great Martyr and true peer of Apostles, Photine, entreat Christ God to grant great mercy unto us. Kontakion in the Third Tone Photine the glorious, the crown and glory of the Martyrs, hath this day ascended to the shining mansions of Heaven, and she calleth all together to sing her praises, that they might be recompensed with her hallowed graces. Let us all with faith and longing extol her gladly in hymns of triumph and joy. February 2015 Page 14
