5 Father Dimitri s Message Beloved in the Lord! Happy New Year! Not only is this the Beginning of the Ecclesiastical New Year, but it is also the start of a lot of wonderful initiatives taken by our parish. Thursday mornings we will be holding Bible Study and Thursday Evening we will be holding Adult Catechism named Blessed Darkness. Our Youth will begin meeting under the wonderful leadership of Dean and Amy Karras. Our Parish will finish its preparations for the Clergy Laity Assembly, Philoptochos Conference, and Family Synaxis that will take place in October. We will also try to redirect our abundant energies into Outreach. One such Outreach Project will be Abraham s Pantry, in which we ask you to donate weekly to our box that will be taken to the Local Food Pantry. We are also working to join the Soup Kitchens and, of course, continue to support our local Pro-Life movement with Trinity Heights Catholic Church. I still have not gotten to know everyone in the area, but I am excited to meet everyone in a better way. Therefore, please expect a phone call from me asking to come to your home or business in what I am calling Operation Zacchaias. September will be a busy month of growth and excitement. Please take advantage of the many ministries, church services, and resources available. It s Time for a New Year s Resolution! 6 President s Message Our first month under the leadership of Fr. Dimitri has been very positive and spiritually fulfilling. We are now in the process of planning the ecclesiastical year of the church, which begins on September 1st. Like any new year, this is the time for resolutions, dedication and celebration. Our first celebration will be our annual church picnic, which will be held on Sunday, September 8th at Chris Larsen Park, following Divine Liturgy. We will be grilling souvlakia for our main course, and we are asking everyone to please bring a side dish, salad or dessert. The picnic donation will be $5 per person, to help cover the costs of shelter rental, paper products and beverages. In addition, at the picnic, we will be celebrating our official welcome and house-warming for Fr. Dimitri and Presbytera Mary. We all know that new homes need incidentals, so we are asking each family to please bring a gift card to help welcome them into our Holy Trinity family and the Sioux City community. We will then present them with all of the gift cards at the picnic! The Metropolis of Chicago Clergy-Laity/Philoptochos/Family Synaxis Conference is also fast approaching. What a blessing and an honor for us to be hosting this event for the first time in the State of Iowa. Preparations are under way and the sign-up sheet will remain in the fellowship hall to enable everyone to sign up for a committee, to help make this a spectacular and glorious event. The dates are October 2-6 and everyone's help and donations are welcome! Banquet tickets for the Thursday, October 3rd Grand Banquet will be available for all parishioners to purchase at $75 each. If you are interested in attending any or all of the conference, tickets and registration packets will also be available for sale on four Sundays after church, in the fellowship hall, starting September 8th. The last day to purchase banquet tickets will be September 29th. All conference and banquet prices have been set by the Metropolis of Chicago, as well as our conference theme, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28. Most important of all, September brings the start of many services and ministries of our parish. Fr. Dimitri has worked very hard to set dates and times for the implementation of all of these events. Please look carefully at the calendar in this newsletter and also on the web-site, and let's all make a resolution to place worship, prayer and Orthodox education a priority in our lives, along with continuing to share our time, talents and treasures! 7 Philoptochos News "Many hands make light work" This old-time adage often comes to mind whenever we plan a day in the church kitchen. How much nicer and pleasant the entire process becomes when so many of you come to help. Please mark the following dates for a few hours to help us as we prepare to 'WOW' our guests at the Clergy-Laity Conference not only with our wonderful parish, but our philoxenia as we prepare appetizers for the Grand Banquet being planned for Thursday, October 3rd at the Marina, as well as Koulourakia to be used all week. 9 Stewardship Time-Talent-Treasure It's often difficult to understand or comprehend just where your Stewardship dollars are spent. You don't see anything tangible before your eyes that you can touch or feel. Each Sunday your envelope goes into the tray or given directly to the treasurer and it sort of disappears. The church is always open, the lights work, the lawn is mowed and all seems like it should. Let me give you a sampling of where your dollars go: Lights and gas: $900 per mo. Telephone: $250 per mo. Garbage service: $65 per mo. Janitor service: $500 per mo. Diocese Commitment: $1571 per mo. Diocese Clergy Benefits: $500 per mo. Property insurance: $750 per mo. Water/sewer service: $75 per mo. Oh yes, there's always the unexpected repair bills. Last month we paid $ 700 to fix two leaks in the cooling system. We also paid $650 to replace just 2' of steam piping. Can t see, touch, or feel these repairs but they had to be done. Add to the above supplies and postage needed to operate our office, material and supplies needed by the priest, the Priest's salary, and other items too numerous to mention and you can see why it takes $12,000 a month to operate our church. We should all be very thankful for the continued support we receive from the people of Sioux City and the surrounding areas. Our Grecian dinners, festival, and Saturday In The Park are winners because of their support. Without the fundraising efforts each steward would burdened with $1,800 of debt to pay just expenses. Contributions to worthy causes in our community are not budgeted nor funded but would fall on each of us. We should give back something to the people that support us. We can only do so much with fundraisers. As stewards of Holy Trinity, we need to do our part. We need to open our hearts and our pocketbooks a little bit more than what we're currently doing. Remember my last talk at the General Assembly where I asked that you each give another $200? To fund it I said to give up one hamburger per week and give the money to Holy Trinity. 10 Divine Liturgy for St. Mammas Monday September 2 Orthros begins at 9:00 a.m. Saint Mammas was from Gangra of Paphlagonia. He was born in prison, where his parents were suffering for Christ's sake and ended their lives. He was named Mammas because, after he had long remained without speaking, he addressed his foster mother Ammia as "mamma." He contested for Christ about the year 275.These things has the Church received from the traditions of the Fathers, who have composed many hymns out of reverence, to the glory of the Mother of our God (see Oct. 3 and 4). Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee received the prize of the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful. Kontakion in the Third Tone With the staff bestowed on thee by God, O holy Great Martyr, shepherd us thy people now in green and lifegiving pastures; swiftly crush with godly power unseen and wild beasts underneath the feet of them that praise thee with longing; for in dangers we all have thee, O Mammas, as our fervent protector and help. Divine Liturgy for Prophet Moses Wednesday, September 4 Orthros begins at 9:00 a.m. The Prophet Moses-whose name means "one who draws forth," or "is drawn from," that is, from the water-was the pinnacle of the lovers of wisdom, the supremely wise lawgiver, the most ancient historian of all. He was of the tribe of Levi, the son of Amram and Jochabed (Num. 26:59). He was born in Egypt in the seventeenth century before Christ. While yet a babe of three months, he was placed in a basket made of papyrus and covered with pitch, and cast into the streams of the Nile for fear of Pharaoh's decree to the mid-wives of the Hebrews, that all the male children of the Hebrews be put to death. He was taken up from the river by Pharaoh's daughter, became her adopted son, and was reared and dwelt in the King's palace for forty years. Afterward, when he was some sixty years old, he fled to Madian, where, on Mount Horeb, he saw the vision of the burning bush. Thus he was ordained by God to lead Israel and bring it out of the land of Egypt. He led Israel through the Red Sea as it were dry land and governed the people for forty years. He wrought many signs and wonders, and wrote the first five books of the Old Testament, which are called the Pentateuch. When he reached the land of Moab, he ascended Mount Nabau, on the peak called Phasga, and there, by divine command, he reposed in the sixteenth century before Christ, having lived for some 120 years. The first two Odes of the Old Testament, "Let us sing to the Lord" and "Attend, O heaven, and I will speak," were written by him. Of these hymns, the first was chanted by the shore of the Red Sea as soon as the Israelites had crossed it; the second, in the land of Moab, a few days before his repose. The Holy High Priest Aaron was the elder brother of the Holy Prophet Moses. He was appointed by God to serve as the spokesman of Moses before the people, and also before Pharaoh, in Egypt. Afterwards, in the wilderness, he was called to the ministry of the high priesthood, as narrated in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers in the Old Testament. The name Aaron means "enlightened." Apolytikion in the Second Tone As we celebrate the memory of Thy Prophet Moses, O Lord, through him we beseech Thee to save our souls. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone With the divine and righteous Moses and Aaron, the Prophets' choir today rejoiceth with gladness, seeing their prophecy fulfilled now in our midst; for Thy Cross, O Christ our God, whereby Thou hast redeemed us, shineth in the sight of all as the end and fulfilment of that which they foretold in ancient times. 11 Esperinos & Divine Liturgy for the Nativity of the Theotokos Saturday, September 7 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 8 at 9 a.m. According to the ancient tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was born of barren and aged parents, Joachim and Anna, about the year 16 or 17 before the birth of Christ. Joachim was descended from the royal line of David, of the tribe of Judah. Anna was of the priestly tribe of Levi, a daughter of the priest Matthan and Mary, his wife. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Your birth, O Theotokos, brought joy to the whole world, for from you dawned the sun of righteousness, Christ our God. Freeing us from the curse, He gave us His blessings. Abolishing death, He granted us eternal life. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone In your holy birth, Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were rid of the shame of childlessness; Adam and Eve of the corruption of death. And so your people, free of the guilt of their sins, celebrate crying: "The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, who nourishes our life." Esperinos & Divine Liturgy for the Elevation of the Holy Cross Friday, September 13 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 14 at 9 a.m. Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, when she was already advanced in years, undertook, in her great piety, the hardships of a journey to Jerusalem in search of the cross, about the year 325. A temple to Aphrodite had been raised up by the Emperor Hadrian upon Golgotha, to defile and cover with oblivion the place where the saving Passion had been suffered. The venerable Helen had the statue of Aphrodite destroyed, and the earth removed, revealing the Tomb of our Lord, and three crosses. Of these, it was believed that one must be that of our Lord, the other two of the thieves crucified with Him; but Saint Helen was at a loss which one might be the Wood of our salvation. At the inspiration of Saint Macarius, Archbishop of Jerusalem, a lady of Jerusalem, who was already at the point of death from a certain disease, was brought to touch the crosses, and as soon as she came near to the Cross of our Lord, she was made perfectly whole. Consequently, the precious Cross was lifted on high by Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem; as he stood on the ambo, and when the people beheld it, they cried out, "Lord have mercy." It should be noted that after its discovery, a portion of the venerable Cross was taken to Constantinople as a blessing. The rest was left in Jerusalem in the magnificent church built by Saint Helen, until the year 614. At that time, the Persians plundered Palestine and took the Cross to their own country (see Jan. 22, Saint Anastasius the Persian). Late, in the year 628, Emperor Heraclius set out on a military campaign, retrieved the Cross, and after bringing it to Constantinople, himself escorted it back to Jerusalem, where he restored it to its place. Rest from labour. A Fast is observed today, whatever day of the week it may be. Apolytikion in the First Tone Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting our rulers to prevail over adversaries, and protecting Your commonwealth by Your Cross. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone Lifted up on the Cross by Your free will, Christ God, grant mercies to the new commonwealth that bears Your name. Gladden our faithful rulers by Your power, giving them victories over their adversaries. May Your alliance be for them a weapon for peace, an invincible standard. September 2013 Page 11

12 Divine Liturgy for St. Eustathios and his Companions Friday, September 20 Orthros begins at 9:00 a.m. The holy Martyr Eustathius before his baptism was an illustrious Roman general named Placidas in the days of the Emperor Trajan. While hunting in the country one day, he was converted to the Faith of Christ through the apparition of an uncommonly majestic stag, between whose antlers he saw the Cross of Christ, and through which the Lord spoke to him with a human voice. Upon returning home, he learned that his wife Tatiana had also had a vision in which she was instructed to become a Christian. They sought out the Bishop of the Christians and were baptized, Placidas receiving the name Eustathius, and Tatiana the name Theopiste; their two sons were baptized Agapius and Theopistus. The family was then subjected to such trials as Job endured. Their servants died, all their goods were stolen, and on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem they were scattered abroad, each not even knowing if the others were still alive. By the providence of God, they were united again after many years, and returned to Rome in glory. Nevertheless, when they refused to sacrifice to the idols-a public sacrifice from which no Roman general could be absent-the Emperor Hadrian, who had succeeded Trajan, had them put into a large bronze device in the shape of a bull, which was heated with fire until they died. When their holy bodies were removed, they were found to be without harm. They suffered martyrdom about the year 126. Divine Liturgy for the Conception of St. John the Baptist Monday, September 23 Orthros begins at 9:00 a.m. This came to pass fifteen months before the birth of Christ, after the vision of the Angel that Zacharias, the father of the Forerunner, saw in the Temple while he executed the priest's office in the order of his course during the feast of the Tabernacles, as tradition bears witness. In this vision, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias and said to him, "Thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John" (Luke 1:13). Knowing that Elizabeth was barren, and that both he and she were elderly, Zacharias did not believe what the Angel told him, although he had before him the example of Abraham and Sarah, of Hannah, mother of the Prophet Samuel, and of other barren women in Israel who gave birth by the power of God. Hence, he was condemned by the Archangel to remain speechless until the fulfilment of these words in their season, which also came to pass (Luke 1:7-24). Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Rejoice, O thou barren one who hadst not borne until now; for lo, in all truth thou hast conceived the lamp of the Sun, and he shall send forth his light over all the earth, which is afflicted with blindness. Dance, O Zacharias, and cry out with great boldness: The one to be born is the blest Prophet of God Most High. Kontakion in the First Tone Great Zacharias now doth rejoice with resplendence; Elizabeth his glorious yoke-mate exulteth; for she hath conceived divine John the Forerunner worthily, whom the great Archangel had announced with rejoicing, whom, as it is meet, we men revere as a sacred initiate of grace divine. 13 Divine Liturgy for the Protomatyr St. Thekla Tuesday, September 24 Orthros begins at 9:00 a.m. This saint was from the city of Iconium. When she was eighteen years of age, she was instructed in the Faith of Christ and the hope of the resurrection by the Apostle Paul, whom also she followed, forsaking her betrothed and espousing a life of virginity for the sake of the Heavenly Bridegroom. Having preached Christ in various cities and suffered many things, she reposed in Seleucia of Cilicia at the age of 90. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone O Lord Jesus, unto Thee Thy lamb doth cry with a great voice: O my Bridegroom, Thee I love; and seeking Thee, I now contest, and with Thy baptism am crucified and buried. I suffer for Thy sake, that I may reign with Thee; for Thy sake I die, that I may live in Thee: accept me offered out of longing to Thee as a spotless sacrifice. Lord, save our souls through her intercessions, since Thou art great in mercy. Kontakion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone O glorious virgin, thou wast entrusted with an apostolate, while shining brightly with virginal beauty and adorned with crowns of martyrdom. And, O Thecla, thou also didst subdue the bull's fury and change the fire to dew by thine entreaties, O first contestant among all womankind. Divine Liturgy for the Translation of St. John the Theologian Thursday September 26 Orthros begins at 9:00 a.m. This Apostle was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of James the elder. First a fisherman by trade, he became an Apostle and the beloved Disciple of Christ. Only he of all the Disciples followed Him even to the Cross, and was entrusted with the care of our Saviour's Mother, as it were another son to her, and a brother of Christ the Teacher. After this, he preached throughout Asia Minor, especially in Ephesus. When the second persecution against the Christians began in the year 96 during the reign of Domitian, he was taken in bonds to Rome, and there was cast into a vat filled to the brim with boiling oil. Coming forth therefrom unharmed, he was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Returning again to Ephesus after the death of the tyrant, he wrote his Gospel (after the other Evangelists had already written theirs) and his three Catholic Epistles. In all, he lived ninety-five years and fell asleep in the Lord during the reign of Trajan in the year 100. He was called Theologian because he loftily expounded in his Gospel the theology of the inexpressible and eternal birth of the Son and Word of God the Father. It is for this cause that an eagle-a symbol of the Holy Spirit, as Saint Irenaeus says-is depicted in his icon, for this was one of the four symbolic living creatures that the Prophet Ezekiel saw (Ezek. 1:10). Apolytikion in the Second Tone Beloved Apostle of Christ our God, hasten to deliver a people without defense. He who permitted you to recline upon His bosom, accepts you on bended knee before Him. Beseech Him, O Theologian, to dispel the persistent cloud of nations, asking for us peace and great mercy. Kontakion in the Second Tone Who can tell thy mighty works, O virgin Saint? For thou pourest forth miracles, and art a source of healings, and thou dost intercede for our souls, as the Theologian and the friend of Christ. September 2013 Page 13
