1 Week of November 2, 2014 All Souls Day The Pastor s Musings The Week at a Glance Dear Family in the Lord, With today s Liturgy, the Commemoration of All Souls, we usher in a month of special remembrance and intercession for our loved ones who, in the words of the First Eucharistic prayer, have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. The liturgy of this day brings us face to face with various facets of reaction to the loss of loved ones. The black vestments affirm the very human response of sadness at a loss. I m sure we ve all experienced that, at times even as we are wiping our tears, we are whispering thanks for a life to have entered ours which meant so much that we cannot easily let go. We can find hope as we recall the reality expressed in the Book of Wisdom, that the souls of the just are in the hands of God. We don t simply release them from our grasp; we lovingly place hand in Hand. The prayers of the Liturgy and the Scriptures of this day remind us that it is the will of the Father that all be saved and, in another place Jesus says, It is the Father s will that I should lose nothing that He has given to me but rather that it be raised up. In this blessed assurance, again our hope is built up. We commend to God s loving mercy all our departed loved ones, since no one knows the state of anyone s soul at the time of death. We are not the judge. We are not heaven s gatekeeper. We are the intercessors. The Communion of Saints, which we profess to believe in as we pray the Creed, assures us that those who have gone before us and are in heaven can assist us with their prayers. Those who are in purification, preparation for entry into heaven, can also assist us and be assisted by our prayers. This is why we pray for the souls in Purgatory. In addition to prayer for our departed loved ones, our remembrance can also lead us to imitate what we celebrate. I often remind folks at funerals of the old saying Imitation in the greatest form of flattery. Sometimes in those we remember we see a deeper faith, a more gentle love, or one or another virtue that, honestly, we see as weak in ourselves. What greater tribute than to seek to imitate them? The scriptures tell us that if a grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it can produce much fruit. This is a good time to see how fruitful our memories are making us. A wonderful and practical way to make this a month of prayer and remembrance for our departed might be to create a prayer corner in our homes. With a crucifix and candle as center, we can place pictures of departed loved ones all around. Each day we can pause, kindle the candle, offer prayer, remember, and plan to imitate a little more often what we celebrate. What a great way to share a legacy of faith with kids! New England autumn seems to be a most fitting environment for this month of remembrance. Days can seem cold and dark. Daylight is getting shorter. Dried leaves and barren trees speak of the externals of death. Yet, we know that out of sight, but within, the buds of life are ever present in nature around us. We get through autumn into winter with confidence in the return of spring and summer. While a great reminder, all this pales in comparison with the reality of each person. Deep within us, within the soul, is that which is undying. We look forward with hope as we realize, in the words of the Preface for the Mass of Dead, that for those who are faithful life is changed not ended and when this earthly abode dissolves, an eternal dwelling place awaits us in heaven. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them! May they rest in peace! As I walk through our cemetery, I often think of an inscription that is placed on every gravestone in a monastic burial ground I visited once. It brings it all home as, on each stone, the space above the name of the one buried, reads: From here will rise Yours in His Love, Monday, November 3 SPS Soccer Banquet 6:00 PM (SJ H) Mass 6:30 PM (SC C) Spiritual Warfare Talk 7:00 PM (SC C) Tuesday, November 4 Preschool Playgroup 9:30 AM (SPS) Bible Study (in Spanish) 5:00 PM (EDPC LL) Bible Timeline 6:30 PM (SJ H) Televised Parish Mass 7 PM, Channel 98 Wednesday, November 5 Imitation of Christ Study 9:00 AM (SJ H) Prayer Cenacle 2:00 PM (SC C) 1 st Reconciliation Parent Mtg 6:30 PM (SJC) K of C Mtg 7:00 PM (IC H) Thursday, November 6 Exposition/Adoration 8:30 AM-7 PM (SC) Preschool Playgroup 9:30 AM (SPS) Natural Family Planning 6:30 PM (SJ H) Benediction 7:00 PM (SC C) Televised Parish Mass 7 PM, Channel 98 Contemporary Choir Rehearsal 7 PM (IC) Friday, November 7 Breakfast Group 8:30 AM (SC H) Auction 6:00 PM Italian Class 7:00 PM (EDPC LL) First Friday Mass 7:00 PM (SC C) Nocturnal Adoration 7:30-Midnight (SC C) Saturday, November 8 Rosary 3:30 PM (IC C) Sunday, November 9 Televised Parish Mass 10 AM, Channel 98 Children s Choir Practice Noon (IC C) Choir Practice Spanish Mass 1:30 PM (SC) Spanish Mass 2:00 PM (SC C) Dominican Laity Mtg 2:30 PM (SJ C) HSYM C1 & C2 5:30 PM (YR SPS) 20/20 WINNER$ $25 Winners ~ Week 10 # 20 Jim Shiring # 93 Verna Fales Sanctuary Lamps The sanctuary lamps at all our churches will burn this week for our Portsmouth parish family.

3 Parish News NEW! First Friday Adoration This Friday, we invite you to join us for Holy Mass at 7:00 PM in our St. Catherine Church. Following Mass the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration and the Litany of the Sacred Heart is prayed communally. The Blessed Sacrament then remains upon the altar for your personal visits for quiet prayer. Nocturnal adoration continues until 11:45 PM. The evening concludes with Compline (Night Prayer) and Benediction. Consider joining us for some heart to Heart time with our Blessed Lord. Maybe you can sleep in a bit on Saturday morning so you could come at some time in the night in response to His request at the Garden of Gethsemane: Could you stay awake and keep watch with me? NEW! Election Day Let s be sure to be good citizens and vote this Tuesday, and, by bringing our faith to bear on the choices we make, let s be sure to be faithful to our primary call to be good citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven! NEW! School Chapel Dedicated We celebrated a beautiful Mass on October 22 with our school community and the kids learned three points about a great holy hero, Saint John Paul II: We shouldn t be afraid to live our faith; we need to open all the doors to Jesus (every aspect of our life); and we should draw close to Mary so we can imitate her and be helped by her prayers to be like her and say yes to whatever God asks of us! After Mass, we gathered in the school chapel (in the attached former convent) and hung a beautiful picture of St. John Paul II and dedicated that space as our St. John Paul II chapel. The chapel is used daily by our Jr High for morning prayer, for visits by other grades, for adoration and prayer by our young ministry, and for rosary by a group of parents and, it is open for your visits during school hours. Simply ring the bell at the school door and, when buzzed in, ask to spend some time with Jesus in our JP II Chapel! NEW!
