1 Week of March 29, 2015 Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion An Invitation to Enter Into Holy Week The Week at a Glance Dear Family in the Lord, As we cross the threshold of this holiest week of the year, I believe the introduction in the Roman Missal for the opening of the Liturgy for Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion sums it up and puts it best: Since the beginning of Lent until now we have prepared our hearts by penance and charitable works. Today we gather together to herald with the whole Church the beginning of the celebration of the Lord s Paschal Mystery, that is to say, of His Passion and Resurrection. For it was to accomplish this mystery that He entered His own city of Jerusalem. Therefore, with all faith and devotion, let us commemorate the Lord s entry into the city for our salvation, following in His footsteps, so that, being made by His grace partakers of the Cross, we may have a share also in His Resurrection and in His life. Because we share in this life of the Risen One by the grace of our Baptism, this week is so much more than simply a looking back, an historical reminiscence. It is the real Jesus, present in Word and Sacrament, as Head of His Body the Church, who gathers us and shares the abundant graces of these days with us. The Liturgical rites, the symbols, actions, song, scripture, and reflections all lead us deeper into the heart of this Paschal Mystery, into the very Heart of Jesus! On Ash Wednesday, we accepted the exterior sign of ashes as a symbol of our interior resolve to turn away from sin and be more faithful to the Gospel. I am sure we have all had our successes and failures over these Lenten days. On Palm Sunday, we accept yet another symbol. Holding the palm we exteriorly convey our interior commitment to die with Him and rise with Him. The palm is the symbol of the martyr, one willing to put faith first and give it all. The palm is also the symbol of victory. Through His cross we are united in the great mystery that as death did not win over our Christ, it will not win out over us. Sin doesn t have the last word! Mercy, and the triumph over sin through the mercy of God, allow us to not simply remember the resurrection event but to experience new life ourselves! This week allows us all, regardless of our success/failure ratio, to draw close to, and to embrace fully, the celebration of the central events that brought about our salvation! I pray that you will make every effort to join us in these days, most especially, the three highpoints in the Sacred Paschal Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Easter Vigil. I beg you to come to the celebrations but, also, come to the quiet to let it all sink in and connect with your life, the crosses you carry, the victory you need to experience. I look forward to sharing these inspiring celebrations with you. Let s pray for one another that this will be a life-renewing time for us all! Poor Box Donations $ Confession Before Easter As you know, our parish has offered opportunities for confession every day of Lent. A good confession is a key part of the Lenten journey as we prepare to enter Holy Week, the Paschal Triduum, and the great Easter Solemnity. This is the work of Lent, preparing our souls to embrace these days of grace. Please note that the last opportunity for confessions will be offered this Monday, the Diocesan Day of Reconciliation. There will be no confessions scheduled for the remainder of this week, including next Saturday. So, if you've yet to embrace His mercy in the Sacrament of Penance: Confessions will be heard today 5:30 to 6:30 PM, and Monday 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Immaculate Conception. RCIA The RCIA catechists and team offer our thanks to our parish community, who has prayed with our candidate during the RCIA Penitential Rite, and with our elect during the RCIA Scrutinies. Those who will enter through the sacraments into our Catholic faith at the Easter Vigil are George Pantelakos and Gail Johnson. Please continue to pray for our elect and candidate as they enter their final week of preparation for the sacraments of initiation. Easter Extra Effort Appeal The operating budget of our parish relies on consistent weekly offertory generosity and is dependent upon an extra-effort of generosity twice a year when we celebrate the great Feasts of Christmas and Easter. We don t need to say what a winter this has been! It has meant soaring heating costs, high plowing bills, and lower than usual collection totals on multiple weekends. So, we are asking that you give prayerful consideration to your Easter offering this year. Please do whatever you can to help us at this tight point in our budget so we can continue to maintain our various facilities and support and expand our diversity of ministry, liturgy, programs, and outreach. In advance, thank you for your pause, reflection, and generosity according to your means!

4 Parish News Divine Mercy Novena For the past few years, we have celebrated the Feast of Divine Mercy on the Sunday after Easter with special solemnity in our parish. We are planning to do so in a very special way this year, both on Divine Mercy Sunday (April 12) and with the Novena of Mercy, beginning on Good Friday and culminating with the Feast day. It was our Lord Himself who offered the tremendous graces that flow from these observances. He instructed us, through His revelations to St. Faustina Kowalska, as to what the intentions of each day of the Novena (or nine days ) were to be, as well as describing the special graces that come to those who observe this feast in honor of the greatest attribute of God His Divine Mercy! We will have Novena pamphlets available at the church doors for you starting next weekend. We hope you will join us as often as you can in the nine days as we pray the chaplet and prayer of the day together on each day, and then join us for the Feast itself. (If you re unable to be here each day for the novena prayers, you could still unite with us, praying them at home alone or with your family.) Here's the schedule of observances: NOVENA begins on Good Friday and continues daily leading up to the Feast. There is a prayer for each day's particular intention, followed by the praying of the Divine Mercy chaplet. We will do this together: Good Friday at 3:00 PM (IC) Holy Saturday at 9:00 AM (SC) Easter Sunday at 7:00 PM (IC) Monday through Friday (April 6 10) after the Mass at 7:00 PM (IC) Saturday, April 11, after 8:00 AM Mass (SC) On Divine Mercy Sunday (April 12), we will have a Solemn Mass at 10:30 AM (IC), followed by Exposition. Adoration opportunity will be ongoing until 3:00 PM. Sung Chaplet of Divine Mercy, homily, Benediction, and veneration of the relic of St. Faustina will take place at 3:00 PM. Confessions will be heard at 11:30 AM and again at 2:00 PM. Spread the word! Join us as, in the words of Jesus Himself, the floodgates of heaven are open wide to let flow the fountain of mercy for souls! NEW! Easter: More Than a Day! The 40 days of fasting (Lent) give way to 50 days of feasting as the Easter Season unfolds, culminating with the Solemnity of Pentecost in late May. The first eight days the Easter Octave are very special days of extending Easter Day! We urge you to try to join us for festive Holy Mass in these days (April 6 10) at 8:00 AM at St. Catherine or 7:00 PM at Immaculate Conception. The Easter Octave days culminate with Divine Mercy Sunday, celebrated on the weekend of April 11/12. As the Season then continues, we will rejoice in the Risen One with a variety of special celebrations. More solemn Liturgy and festive decoration in our churches will characterize these 50 days of feasting! NEW! Easter in the Home Why not carry the 50 days of Easter into your home? A nice vessel near your door with Easter Holy Water can be decorated with flowers and maybe an image of the Risen Lord? (Buy a card with the picture and frame it). This becomes a beautiful reminder as you enter/leave your home that we share His Risen Life through the waters of Holy Baptism. The Easter Water can be found in the baptismal fonts at the front of each of our churches. Use special candles, tablecloth, and flowers, and have special foods and treats on the Sundays of Easter season to keep the special nature of this season alive in your home a great teachable moment for the kids! We ve been preparing for this for 40 days don t let it seem to pass in a day! Reveling in resurrection is about eternal life let s keep it going 50 days strong! NEW! For the Kids! Parents, please plan to bring the kids (4th grade and younger) to St. Catherine at 10:00 AM sharp on Saturday, April 4 th, for the visit of the Easter Bunny! He'll have candy and fun to bring to them. But, let's not let the reason of Easter be lost on them. Be sure to bring them into church at St. Catherine that day, before or after, to see the image of Jesus that will be lying in death in the beautiful garden tomb scene there. Then, bring them back during the week after Easter to see the white cloth and the empty tomb. These symbols will be long remembered and help them get it. Faith and Fun can... and do... go together! *The hunt will be outside you may want to wear boots! NEW! No Coffee Hour Next Weekend There will be no Coffee Hour Hospitality next weekend in order to allow our volunteers to enjoy Easter Sunday with their families. NEW! Traveling Vocation Icon This week, Maxine Nowell will receive the Icon of Jesus Knocking at the Door into her home and intercede in a special way for Shannon and all in formation, for those discerning, and for many vocations to rise up from our community.
