Dear Ones, April/May 2013 Each time I sit with a family as a loved one is dying, I am reminded of the importance of having one s affairs in order. It doesn t matter your age, as none of us knows the number of our days. It is a matter of taking good care of our family, our property, and resources ~ all the gifts and graces bestowed upon us by God. It is a matter of stewardship. As a priest in the Episcopal Church, it is my duty and privilege, per the Canons of the Church, to instruct all persons in my charge concerning Christian stewardship, including: SERVICES Sunday: 8:00 am Rite I, Holy Eucharist St. Agnes Every Sunday 9:10 am Sunday School 10:15 am Rite II, Holy Eucharist, 1st & 3rd Sundays at St. Agnes 2nd & 4th Sundays at St. Cyprian s Wednesday: St. Agnes - 8:30 am Yoga 11:00 am Healing Service 6:00 pm Youth Gathering 1) The reverence for the creation and the right use of God s gifts; 2) The generous and consistent offering of time, talent and treasure for the mission and ministry of the Church at home and abroad; 3) The biblical standard of the tithe for financial stewardship; 4) The responsibility of all persons to make a will as prescribed in the Book of Common Prayer, pg Stewardship is a matter of living a life of faith and trust in God. It is acknowledging that creation and all that is in it, including our time, relationships, talents and possessions come forth from God s abundance in creation. We are the current caretakers of all that is for this moment in time. We have the privilege of standing in the gap between the saints who have gone before us and the saints who are yet to come. So may we take good care of our resources ~ for our world, nation, community, church and our loved ones. May we grow and be transformed as we live into the practice of faithful stewardship. 2 Page 2 All Saints Newsletter title and the function of the Senior Warden. Your Senior Wardens Good morning-afternoon-evening or whenever you are reading this. Dawn and I thought it would be good if we, as your senior wardens, tried to communicate with you via this newsletter as well as on Sunday mornings or when you call with a concern. From the Vestry Papers, January 2009, come this description of the title and the function of the Senior Warden: First, the role of a warden differs from parish to parish, depending on the traditions and culture of the congregation, the personality, and leadership style of the rector and the needs of the community at a particular time. The canons of the Episcopal Church say very little about wardens other than their responsibility to ensure that worship services are continued in the absence or disability of the rector or parish priest. The term itself dates back to seventeenth century England because of the individual s responsibility to unlock the church doors for worship and other events. The distinction between senior and junior warden or rector s warden and people s warden depends on the diocese, the parish and even geographical or regional customs and practice. Putting canons and customs aside, the primary role of the warden is to serve as the lay partner of the rector or priest-in-charge in articulating the mission and vision of the parish, managing its day-to-day operations, identifying and nurturing leaders, and empowering members of the congregation to live out the Gospel in their daily lives... In some situations, wardens serve as liaisons or primary contacts between the vestry and members of the congregation. While this role can be appropriate and necessary, wardens should avoid creating or nurturing triangulation and encourage individual members to have direct conversations with vestry members or other parish leaders with whom they have questions or concerns. Here s the link to the full article: Communication is so vital to our parishes and we know this is one area where we need lots of help. Specifically, we need to be able to reach those parishioners who do not have or who prefer telephone contact when there is a parish need. When we were smaller, the Vestry created a phone tree, but what we need now is a Phone Tree Volunteer some ONE person who can call several, who can call several. Is that person you? It would also be great if all who have could commit to checking your at least daily thus decreasing the number of calls someone has to make. Speaking of communication, we know that there is some mis-communication happening about the little white house on the St. Agnes. Yes, there is a member of the parish who is looking into the demolition of the house as well as a person who is looking into restoring the house. There is saleable chestnut before the early 19 th century blight that is in much of the house. There is evidence of the house having been used as overnight shelter (not authorized). There is concern about liability should someone be injured in the house. There is interest in preserving the house as an example of early 1900 s housing in Franklin. All this is being looked at and before anything is done, the Architectural Committee of the Diocese must approve of the final plans. If you have Cont Pg 4

The Corn Festival committee is now collecting gently used items to be sold during the 16th Annual Sweet Corn Festival. Income at the garage sale venue was $574 last year and we want to grow this area. A room is available in the Undercroft of St. Cyprian to store some items until the festival. Be thinking small furniture. lamps, china, collectibles, books, etc. No clothes will be accepted. You may bring small items to the ASEC office during normal office hours (Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 until 1:00) or call Barbara Britzius, , to arrange for pickup. Ministry & Mission Conference Saturday, May 4th At First Baptist Church, Asheville 8:45 3:45 Registration $35 Registration forms in parish halls. Don t Miss It!!! 4 Volume 25, Issue 1 Page 4 Confirmation Class 2013 Congratulations to Zachary Marshall & Isaiah Parks who completed the six week long confirmation class. Isaiah and Zach enjoyed an educational journey that was filled with discussion and lots of activities. I want to thank all those who helped and supported this class to make it a fun-filled, and spiritual journey for the boys. We used the My Faith, My Life curriculum that taught us all about the commitment to God when being confirmed. We learned all about the history of the Episcopal Church, the beginning of Christianity, the Apostles Creed and more! Our class finished with an overnight retreat at St. Agnes, complete with activities, games and a movie. Along with the fun we also learned about the Sacraments and finished with an instructed Eucharist with The Rev Dorrie Pratt. You have power; claim it! Let no one but you define you. Seize the moment; a lost opportunity does not come back. Be a leader. Value your life and that of others. Assert yourself. Another piece of communication, really it s a calendar event, is Saturday, July 6 THE CORN FESTIVAL. Barbara Britzius graciously agreed to chair this event, and the Corn Festival Executive Committee has begun its planning for this year. I believe many of you are already spring cleaning and finding something that would be wonderful for the yard sale (no clothes, however). Put the date on the calendar, find your sun hat and let us know how you wish to help. As an ongoing tribute to Betty Healy, we will continue the collection of Campbell s soup labels for Thompson Children s Home. Buy the soup, eat the soup (or drink it), soak off the label (be sure to keep the bar code intact), dry the label and then bring it to either parish hall. Shortly, if not already, there will be a collection box/basket. And while you are at it, bring your canned goods for CareNet. Not finally, but this is getting long enough, we thank all of you for your St. Patty s Day dinner help selling tickets, donating desserts, beer, wine, eating. We thank all of you for a glorious Sunday with the Bishop, we congratulate Zach and Isaiah on their journey, we thank all those who helped with confirmation classes, we thank those who fixed hot water handles, we thank those who were with us in prayer. We thank you for walking the Holy Week journey, for your gifts on a glorious Easter, for all that you do and for all of your prayers.
