1 THE E-PISTLE November Facebook: /holyspiritwaco REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE WITH BOOT BLESSING On Saturday, November 10 at 6:00 PM we will have a Remembrance Day Service to remember those past and present who have served in the armed forces. The Waco Hunger Walk takes place the following afternoon with a portion of the proceeds assisting veterans who need food assistance. We have invited Hunger Walk participants to join us at the Saturday evening service to receive a special blessing. Mother Bobbi and Chelle Samaniego have more information for the Hunger Walk, if you are interested. This year s participation will provide an introduction to another way in which we can be God s hands and (especially) feet in our community. - Mother Bobbi Episcopal Church Women attend the ECW Diocesan Retreat at Camp Allen Read more on page 4. 2 FROM THE RECTOR WRAPPING UP THE CHRISTIAN YEAR We don t do time like the world does time. The world counts down to midnight on December 31. It says good riddance to a year of failed hopes and expectations. It says hello to a set of dreams and resolutions that will probably die on the vine by tax day. It sets up its followers to perpetual failure, perpetual lowering of expectations, perpetual, hopeless dreariness. But, we don t do time like the world does time. Or, at least that s the hope. Our new year doesn t start January 1. It starts the first Sunday of Advent. We don t tell time based on a set day in the secular calendar. We tell time based on the great acts of God in Christ: Christmas and Easter. Our new year doesn t sweep the old year under the rug. It reminds us that there is still good to be hoped for, a good that builds on the good of God s work in the past, preparing us for God s work in the future. Our new year doesn t set itself upon half-baked dreams and resolutions. It roots itself in the eternal love of the almighty God. Our new year isn t a grand set-up for failure. Our new year is a preparation for the Nativity. It is not a perpetual lowering of expectations. It is a reminder of steady growth. It is not a trap door to dreariness, but the quiet peace that comes from knowing, loving, and following the One who lived, died, and rose again. This November, use every moment of this final green season to enjoy the growth that God gives each and every one of us. Use the moments of family stress to remind yourself of God s love. Use the moments of hectic and harried to remind you where your hope and home are. In short, don t do time like the world does time. We don t do it like they do, anyway. - Fr. Jason 2 Becoming and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ

4 PARISH LIFE DAUGHTERS OF THE KING Daughters of the King met on October 7 at Holy Spirit. Carol Melis and Deborah Vlam talked about their experience at the Fall Assembly at Camp Allen. The spring Assembly will be held at St Peter s in Brenham in March. Thanks to Carol and Deborah for representing us. Thirty two Survival Kits were distributed to Christian Women s Job Core and 15 to Care Net. Our service project to fill gently used handbags for CWJC is on going and will be completed by December graduation. Keep filling those bags, ladies! We said farewell to Carol Dhrif with a card and a gift. Carol and Tarek have made it safely to Ohio and are settling in. Even though Carol will continue as a Daughter at Large, we will miss her presence. Our next meeting will be on November 4 at 1:00 in the Holy Spirit library. PASTORAL CARE & SHUT-IN - Pam Ritch God is not hard to please. He does not expect us to be absolutely perfect. He just wants us to keep moving toward Him and believing in Him, letting Him work with us to bring us into conformity to His will and ways.- Joyce Meyer We have to believe in that to give us peace. We will never be perfect but as long as we are heading in the right direction, I believe that this is his will for us. We changed our meeting time in October, allowing more people to attend. Mother Bobbi has been a blessed new addition. Let us know if we can be if any help. We can only help if we know. - Mary Gresham EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN The 117th Episcopal Diocese of Texas ECW Retreat was held at Camp Allen the weekend of Oct And while Waco had a very rainy weekend, the Piney Woods of Navasota enjoyed brilliant summer- like weather. I want to thank Judy Bauer, Sally Brown, Peggy Gidney, Caren Phillips, Mindy Wilkins and Nancy Williams for all their help pulling off the logistics of the weekend! They were a blessing to all the women they encountered! The ladies of St. Luke the Evangelist in Houston were a big help, as well. Holy Spirit was celebrated and thanked profusely for all we did to make the retreat a success, and it was a lovely acknowledgement for our church! We began Friday night with dinner, and our opening speaker, Marcy C. Earle, an Episcopal priest and author. Her book Marvelously Made was the inspiration of our theme, I am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made. Nancy W i l l i a m s designed our logo for the retreat bags. Saturday we had a Chapel Service, the ECW Annual Meeting and officer installation. Then our workshops began! We had six wonderful workshops from Yoga Faith and Creative Card making to lectures. Two Baylor Professors, Gaynor Yancey (a friend of Holy Spirit s) and Dr. Gregg Garrett, led workshops. Gaynor spoke on, Women as Leaders: What Does That Look Like.? How do we live into what God has made us to be without hiding our gifts and our talents under the table. She discussed how we should celebrate all that God has created us and gifted us to be as leaders. Greg presented, Stories We Live By, where he considered movies, TV shows, novels, memoir, music, and figures in our sacred texts and church history to understand why these stories matter and how we might use them. He said his Baylor class, which relates Harry Potter to life, is always full, and students write letters explaining why they should be allowed an exception to get in his class! 5 ANGLICAN COMMUNION NEWS CANON CAROL PETTY RETIRES FROM DIOCESAN STAFF The Rev. Carol Petty, Canon for Wellness and Pastoral Care and Safe Guarding Minister, will retire effective October 1 after serving five years on the diocesan staff. Under her leadership, the focus of the Diocese s safeguarding ministry expanded beyond compliance with policies to include the establishment of safe, healthy ministry environments across the Diocese of Texas. To that end, Petty and her team developed the Ministry of Wellness and Care to encourage parishes, schools, and organizations to create cultures of health, safety and mutual care in their ministry contexts. Petty also developed ministries of clergy wellness and pastoral care to clergy. It has been a true privilege and joy to serve as EDOT s Canon for Wellness and Pastoral Care, Petty said. May God continue to bless you with wisdom and wellness. Petty previously served as rector at Holy Comforter in Angleton, and assistant rector at Trinity in Longview. We wish her well as she retires to spend more time with her family: husband George Zwicker and their 17 (!) grandchildren. Petty s successor, Canon Lisa Hines succeeds Petty and began in August to ensure a smooth transition. - reprinted from epicenter.org TRUNK OR TREAT PICTURES w w w. h o l y s p i r i t w a c o. c o m 5

6 WORSHIP FROM THE ALTAR GUILD Dorothy Hall has been a real Godsend to the Holy Spirit Altar Guild. For many years she has lovingly hand-laundered our soiled linens from large fair linen to small home communion kit purificators, ironed them to perfection and promptly returned them to the sacristy. Dorothy has retired; our hearts are exceedingly grateful for your faithful service. We pray that God s richest blessings are sent your way. Here is more Episcopal speak from The Complete Training Course for Altar Guilds. 8 FROM THE CURATE CORNER CURATE CAMP & DISCERNING CALL Some of you have heard me mention that I d be out of the office for Curate Camp. While the title lends itself to images of roasting marshmallows around a campfire, that s not the type of camp that is taking place. In reality, it is a time for additional training, discernment, and networking with others who are new to priestly ministry in the Episcopal Diocese of Texas (EDoT). There are eight of us in the current Curate cohort. Four are originally from EDoT, four (including me) are from other dioceses. Four of us went to Virginia Theological Seminary, four to other seminaries. Four are female, four are male. Five are married, three are single. Five are transitional deacons, three have already taken priestly vows. There are two from our group who are currently serving as deaconsin-charge. We come from varied backgrounds and I am blessed to be with the other seven individuals in our cohort. We have two facilitators, The Rev. Beth Fain and the Rev. Daryl Hays, who guide us through the learning objective each month. The topics for the first three months were: Self-care and Sabbath Taking, Balancing Work and Family, and Leading from the Second Chair. In November, the topic of discussion is Anxiety & Conflict. Each session has been valuable to growth in individual ministry. Additionally, being with my peers, sharing our individual struggles and successes has been invaluable to establish a network of support within the vast network that is our diocese. Quickly, we have learned to support one another in our current ministries. We have also begun to help one another discern ways in which God is preparing us for future ministry. There has been no doubt in my mind that I was called to begin my ministry at Holy Spirit Waco. Over and over again, that call has been affirmed both in Waco and by my peers. When I first visited Holy Spirit in May, I was excited to find a parish that was in the midst of building upon its roots to make improvements that would prepare us for the next stage of growth. In particular, I was anxious to see the ways in which the leadership operating system Father Jason had begun to implement could provide a model for other churches of our size successfully tackle growth. It was easy for me to see that God might desire to weave together my previous life in finance and management with that of a call on my heart to encourage evangelism and mission. Over the past four months, Father Jason has led the leadership group to consider our parish s core values and call to ministry. (His guidance to see God s vision for Holy Spirit has been exceptional and has enabled me to see my own role as a future rector.) On Dec 2nd, as we begin the new Church year with Advent I, we will gather as a parish family to discuss these values and look to the future. I can say without a doubt, I am so excited at what God has in store! In light of my attendance at the recent clergy conference, I am also excited about how what happens at Holy Spirit has an opportunity to be an inspiration for other parishes around our diocese. We do ministry together we are never alone when it comes to God s call to spread the Gospel. No single person can do it all. We share each other s hopes and burdens. The things I learn while at Holy Spirit will carry forward to other parishes I serve in the future. Our ministry together here, will become part of future ministries around the Church. Each challenge and advance prepares us for what God would have us do next each and every day anew. God calls us from the future to the future. It s exciting to see where God is leading! Maybe it ll include camp with roasting marshmallows!!! - Mthr Bobbi 8 Becoming and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ

9 PARISH HEALTH WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW FOR THE FLU SEASON Getting a flu vaccine every year is the best way to protect yourself and your family from flu and its potentially serious complications. CDC recommends that everyone six months and older get vaccinated by the end of October. Parents This flu season, protect yourself and your family. Everyone in your family who is six months of age and older should get vaccinated for the best protection against flu. Each year, millions of children get sick, thousands are hospitalized, and some die from flu. Last flu season a record high number of seasonal flu-related deaths in children were reported to CDC. About 80% of fluassociated deaths in children occur in kids who have not been fully vaccinated against flu. Flu vaccination has been shown to significantly reduce a child s risk of dying from flu. CDC recommends everyone six months and older get an annual flu vaccine. This season, any licensed, age-appropriate flu MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING Please join us on Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM for an 8-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid training course hosted by Holy Spirit Episcopal Church in Waco and sponsored by the Episcopal Health Foundation. Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches: Risk factors and warning signs of mental health concerns Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and substance abuse A 5-step action plan to help someone developing a mental health concern or in crisis Available evidence-based professional, peer, and self-help resources The Youth Mental Health First Aid curriculum was developed to specifically highlight information participants can use to pinpoint the unique risk vaccine is recommended. The nasal spray flu vaccine is an option for children ages two years and older this season. Ask your health care professional what vaccine is right for your child this year. You have the power to protect your family against flu this season. Get yourself and your family a flu vaccine fight flu! Older Adults (65+) People 65 years and older are at high risk of getting seriously ill from flu, due to the weakening of the immune system that happens with age. During most flu seasons, people 65 years and older bear the greatest burden of severe flu disease. In fact, it is estimated that between 70-85% of flu-related deaths and 50-70% of flu-related hospitalizations occur among people in this age group. Flu vaccination has been shown to reduce flu illness and serious outcomes. A 2017 study showed that flu vaccination reduced deaths, intensive care unit admissions (and length of stay), and overall duration of hospitalization among hospitalized flu patients 65 years and older. factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents ages Most notably, the session touches on how to best support those experiencing the most common mental health challenges among youth, such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, substance use disorder, and eating disorders. Who takes the course?: Mental Health First Aid is designed for adults who work closely with youth, such as faith leaders, youth group leaders, and school staff. The workshop is also beneficial for parents and families who may have youth with mental health concerns. The training is FREE and lunch will be provided.
