Of course, we all know what we should say, but do we really believe it? The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said that Chris anity is opposed to joy. Many people today would probably say the same thing. Is it true? Does God really want us to be happy? What does the Bible tell us? Today in the gospel we just read the miracle at Cana isn t it interes ng that in the gospel of John, Jesus first miracle is at a wedding? You might expect it to be in the temple a er all, He is the Son of God but it s at a wedding. Let s unpack the scene: Jesus is at a small party and the wine runs out. Bishop Fulton Sheen used to joke that maybe the reason the wine ran out was because Jesus and the apostles had crashed the party a er tramping around Galilee for a few days. In any case, Jesus mother Mary tells him the wine is gone. And then she tells the headwaiter Do whatever he tells you. Jesus tells the waiter to fill up 6 ceremonial jars with water. We re all familiar with what happens next. Maybe we re too familiar with it. Some mes it s good to step back for a minute and consider what the Bible says. Jesus turns the water into wine. Remember the context, it s probably a rela vely small party. People have already been drinking freely. You might expect Jesus to make a few more gallons of wine and then tell everyone to call it a night. Do you know how much wine he makes? Somewhere between 120 and 180 gallons of wine! That s close to 900 bo les! God is not s ngy. Jesus is saying that this celebra on is good. John also tells us that this miracle revealed Christ s glory. God glories in our joy. God is overwhelmingly generous. 4 The Annulment Process Testimony of Witnesses After providing his or her testimony, the Petitioner is requested to provide the names of three or four witnesses who can complete a written questionnaire. These witnesses are asked to provide information regarding the parties family backgrounds, their dating and engagement relationships, and their marital history. The witnesses can be family members or friends ideally a combination of both is helpful. Compilation of Testimony When the testimony is assembled, the parties may inspect the testimony pertinent to the grounds in the case. This is known as the Publication of the Acts of the case. After the testimonies of the parties and the witnesses have been assembled it is not uncommon for the Tribunal to schedule an appointment for the Petitioner with a court-appointed expert such as a psychologist or psychiatrist. The independent assessment of these consultants is beneficial in developing and evaluating potential grounds for individual cases. Defender of the Bond After all of the testimony has been compiled, the case is presented to the Defender of the Bond. The work of the Defender is to present to the judges arguments in favor of upholding the validity of the marriage in question. Three-Judge Panel The case is then presented to a three-judge panel (Tribunal) for a final decision. When the judges have reviewed the case, discussed it and arrived at a final decision, a sentence, or the results of their deliberations, is written. This sentence includes the basic facts and information of the marriage in question provided by the assembled testimony, a pertinent law section concerning the canonical grounds of the case and the judges decision, based upon the law of the Church and its application to the marriage in question. Appeal If either party is opposed to the decision of the Philadelphia Tribunal, that is, if a Declaration of Nullity is granted or not granted, a formal appeal of this decision of the court of First Instance (Philadelphia) may be made to the Tribunal of Second Instance (Baltimore). Alternatively, an appeal can also be made to the highest Tribunal of the Church, the Roman Rota. There are costs involved for these actions. If there is no appeal of the Tribunal decision, that decision becomes effective immediately and documentation is sent to the parties.
